We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/19360239.east-lancashire-visitors-slam-dangerous-pleasure-beach-tripadvisor-suspend-reviews/

Blackpool, out of the whole of Lancashire, is exempt from the current enhanced “guidance” on travel and mixing – could this be something to do with its place in the domestic tourism market, which the government seems hell bent on preserving over all other travel? Claims by local leaders that infection rates are below the county average are disingenuous as the huge numbers of visitors from other areas won’t be getting tested there!

    • TGLoyalty says:

But if everyone in the rest of Lancashire is following the guidance then everyone visiting is from areas with a far lower Covid rate.

Let’s be honest this is just advice to help you manage the virus yourselves. What’s with this obsession with rules and laws.

Do you need a law to tell you not to put your hand in a blender when it’s switched on? Or not to stick a fork in a electrical socket?

      • Richster says:

Unfortunately there are a lot of stupid people out there. If they can’t see it, then it doesn’t exist. I think the mass media needs to be more proactive in educating people, although some people are too stupid or set in their ways to change their behaviour 🙁

        • HBommie says:

          More?
I’ve turned the news off after having been educated for months, if they don’t get the message by now they’ll never get it.

          • TGLoyalty says:

There was no education. Nothing about what and how to keep safe.

            Just peddled fear

          • HBommie says:

Wear a mask, don’t kiss your Granny.

          • Tariq says:

Indeed, most people are tbh, that’s why we’ve had this slavish obeyance of the irrational and hysterical ‘measures’.

      • ken says:

The only people quoted in the article are from Burnley & Blackburn !

        • Anna says:

They’re trying to follow the advice Ken 🤣

          • ken says:

Funnily enough the next story down is about a gastropub called the Parkers Arms near Cltheroe

Was looking at going to this the next time I’m walking in the area. Do you know what its like ?

A few poor reviews on Trip but seemingly from idiots. The owner seems splendidly vituperative in response !

          • Anna says:

Don’t think I’ve been to that one but I could be wrong! I feel that local opinion will most likely favour the venue …

        • TGLoyalty says:

The news specifically looks for and makes sensationalist comments.

Yes there have been lots of people flouting the laws and ignoring the advice but there are plenty taking notice too.

      • Anna says:

That’s not the point though. There have been huge numbers of people ignoring the advice (and the law) since the beginning, and they know this. In my view it’s a deliberate decision so the authorities don’t have to deal with criticism if an outbreak is traced to Blackpool and people start asking why domestic holidays are being heavily promoted.

        • Anna says:

And Blackpool’s infection rate is currently more than twice the national average, and also higher than some areas of Lancashire which are in receipt on the enhanced guidance and support.

      • xcalx says:

“Do you need a law to tell you not to put your hand in a blender when it’s switched on? Or not to stick a fork in a electrical socket?”

When I was about six the electric fire had a broken push button switch to turn the light on, in my wisdom I pushed a knitting needle into it, I got a crack off the fire then off my dad. Light came on though.

    • Andrew says:

Blackpool is one of the most deprived areas of England. You can check the deprivation score here and discover how posh you are:-

      https://maps.cdrc.ac.uk/

I think it just misses the number one spot for deprivation. That’s why it’s a Covid hotspot.

      • Anna says:

It does have some of the most deprived wards in the country, but it’s not a Covid hotspot according to the official position!

  • Jody says:

Apologies for what probably sounds like a stupid question, but being given the run around by BA!

Called last week to try and get my flights (that they cancelled) moved outside of 12 months (can’t do it on MMB). Told no, and told to open up a complaint online, which I did.

On Monday I was sent an email saying the complaint was only for post travel, and they’d forwarded it to pre-travel customer relations. No other details given, and it’s an email address you can’t reply to (of course).

Just wondered which is the best email address and phone number to follow this up on please? Apologies if this is obvious, but I want to get it right as I suspect I will end up going to MCOL.

    Thanks.

    • Anna says:

Do they give a timescale for responding, I can’t remember? If so, give them that plus one day then email again asking for their final position. If not, decide what you think is reasonable (I would say about 30 days at the moment) and do the same.

      • Jody says:

On the auto response I got back after opening the case, it should said we should get back to you shortly! That was last Thursday. On Monday I got the email saying that the complaint has been forwarded on to pre-travel customer relations. Last night I clicked on the link it provided to reply, asking for an email address or similar, and today they responded saying that there isn’t one, and that if I can’t get through via the contact centre (which is what I tried to do in the first place last Thursday!) then I should try either Twitter (which I don’t have) or Facebook!

        • Lady London says:

In any event if no satisfactory resolution for 8 weeks – including lack of response etc – perfectly reasonable to take further action. I would want to log at least 3 attempts in that time though. But after that I wouldn’t hang around and would proceed formally.

TBH I think a little caution is needed on > 12 months rerouting (ie rebook later date). I absolutely believe it’s sound and fair to pursue these. I’ve mentioned the sorts of situations people could be in with regard to rebooking once their original flights have been cancelled, often enough. Just to say make sure you can state why your new date is needed by you and not an earlier date.

I’ll leave it there as I don’t want to do BA’s work for them but in EU261 there is a grey area on this.

          • Jody says:

Well, hopefully the fact that the Alaska cruise season was completely cancelled this year, and I have a cancellation invoice for our booking for that, plus a new invoice for a booking made for an Alaskan cruise next year will be enough? I have no desire to go to Seattle in particular (sure it’s a great place, but you know what I mean!) other than to join a cruise I’ve booked and paid for.

  • Garye says:

Totally confused now with the Ms Sturgeon rules for Scotland – I believe I can now drive to Scotland, can attend a Euro 2020 game, but the cruise ships with all passengers double vaccinated, and crew either vaccinated or tested daily are not allowed to dock in Scotland. MSC rules also state that passengers can only disembark if they are participating in a cruise organised shore excursion – am I missing something as to what the issue is here?

    • Rab C says:

The issue is she’s always trying to leverage herself into being a powerful political figure and instead she often comes across as the complete opposite.

    • Anna says:

Actually, it depends on where you live whether you can legally travel to Scotland. English Covid hotspots are being added to Scottish legislation so you might need to check!

I think there is a separate ban on people getting on and off cruise ships as there were so many outbreaks on them last year.

    • Peggerz says:

I can only imagine their answer would be that the football matches at Hampden Park are at the most only 25% of capacity out in the open with social distancing and mask wearing, though the policing of that will be interesting. Don’t know what the capacity limits/distancing/masks are for the cruise ships and there seems to be some confusion in the reporting whether the cruise company have followed all the rules for Scotland (I don’t know either).
However the more pertinent question seems to be re the 3000+ fans allowed into a fanzone in Glasgow without testing.

      • Garye says:

Cruise ship capacity is 6,000 and the maximum on the ship will be 1,000 in total. Theatres for shows hold a 1,000 but will only allow 300 at a time. Passengers and crew get tested every day – so seems they are taking all the precautions necessary.

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Does it matter?

The law is written to say no cruise ships until the place is in level 1!

They are either expected to change their laws to exempt British only cruises or the cruises can miss out Scotland … they’ve decided they should miss out Scotland.

32k referral offer (for you) is still on my Gold CC., Rob has my link

    • Alex says:

      Desperate times?

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

No, I have my plan to get to Australia anything else is a bonus. I seem to be one of the only ones with the offer, just trying to help people.

    • Coucou says:

      Chill

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I am chilling, hbu? Has Bendy set Che on you with a revolutionary yet?

    • Harry T says:

Pretty sure loads of people have this referral offer, my girlfriend and me included.

      • Andrew says:

Indeed – most of us have either this one or the 70k on Platinum.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

When was the last time you checked? The offer for all ended ages ago, it is only targeted now.

          • Harry T says:

I’m looking at the offer right now on several cards – I was also targeted for enhanced referral bonuses before they extended the offer to everyone.

          • Andrew says:

About 30 seconds before I posted the comment! You’re honestly not the only one with these offers!!!

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Also re: plat, seems much more widespread than gold

          • meta says:

Both my partners have increased offer on both BAPP and Platinum/Gold cards.

          • meta says:

            * both me and my partner

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

@meta what is the BAPP offer? Might be switching sometime soon

          • meta says:

@Super Secret Stuff 30k for you.

14k Avios for me, but it’s better for referrer to go BAPP via Amex Plat as that’s 24k MR points.

          • meta says:

@Super Secret Stuff actually scrap the last point as BAPP via Amex Plat referrer the bonus for the referred is only 26k Avios.

    • DT says:

Thought the collective thought on politeness regarding this was to just respond to someone if they ask for this. But if it’s open season, then I also have this offer on my wife’s gold card and the 70k bonus on my plat card 🙂

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I never post my referral links on here out of respect for HfP. My point was that it still exists if people don’t know

        • DT says:

Cool, I’m also letting people know that I have the enhanced gold and plat offer if they need

      • DK says:

        @meta What’s the BAPP offer?

    • Reney says:

Just to say we have none of those enhance offers, so I do appreciate people mentioning they still exists and Rob will get an email from me when I need one. Good luck to whoever is at the top of Rob’s list!

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

No problem, rob at least has my link so sure he will be able to sort you out

  • HH says:

Has anyone else noticed the expiry date of the NHS app COVID barcode for travel has changed from 20 June? Mine now says 7 December, not sure if that’s linked to my vaccination date (second dose 1 June) or if this date has some other significance?

    • ChrisC says:

Just checked mine and it’s 7th December.

No idea in the significance of the date.

Just as a data point I had my 2nd Jab on Tuesday evening and when I checked the app yesterday morning just before 8am it was showing,

This was at the Brighton Centre which is a NHS trust organised site. Friends who have had their jabs at GP clinics tell be it took until at least the 2nd day after the jab for it to appear.

    • Sandra says:

Yes mine now 7 December, my 2nd vax date was 16th April so I don’t think date of vaccination affects it, it’s probably a change to everyone.

    • Craig says:

Same expiry, 2nd jab late Feb.

    • Nicky says:

Just checked mine after reading your comment. I have had both jabs but my app has moved from 21st June to 21st July??????

      • meta says:

It now switched to 10 July from this morning when it showed 9 Dec. There is now a line below the expiry date to say that it automatically refereshes every 30 days to protect the data. I think they were working and are still working on it.

        • Reeferman says:

Mine also says 10 July – but a footnote says it’ll automatically refresh every 30 days to protect my data

          • Reeferman says:

Sorry! Hadn’t seen the above before posting my comment.

  • KBuffett says:

The comments function is quite brief and transient.a Can anyone recommend any forums where one can have more in-depth discussions on topics much as UK centric finance, business with a user base similar to HfP?

    • Genghis says:

If you specifically want a forum, Lemon fool, but traffic a bit limited these days. Bogleheads non-US forum gets a reasonable amount of traffic but not just UK focused.

      • KBuffett says:

It doesn’t have to be a forum, but I think they are great for in depth specific discussions.
I am in a similar position to Rob when he retired. I am pondering what to do next, investments etc. It’s good to be able to have discussions with like minded people.

        • JDB says:

Personally, I think you should be very wary of these investment forums. They are packed with charlatans, the ignorant and people pushing their own agenda/investments. You really need to meet people in person and judge for yourself who is sensible. You should be able to find local small business groups / investors near to you. Also quite a few of the SEIS/EIS providers organise investment groups, offer co-investment opportunities and funds as well as individual investment opportunities.

    • Andy says:

There’s r/UKInvesting on Reddit, but it is most definitely not a similar user base to HfP!

      • KBuffett says:

Thanks. I’m also looking to invest or start new private business(es)

        • M says:

For the businesses part check out popup business school

        • JDB says:

I don’t like making recommendations as different things suit different people, but I invest in micro businesses (funds or individual cos) via SFC Capital and Green Angel Syndicate. I have done a lot of direct EIS investments as well as funds where the ones I like are Downing and Seneca. I don’t like Octopus or Oxford Capital (one of the backers of Curve!) ! For VCTs, amongst others, I like Albion. Not as a place I would invest through, but if you look at the Wealth Club website it will show you a lot of options of companies/funds etc. that you can then look at yourself if they appeal to you.

    • M says:

Hmm not really forums, but I recommend:
      – banker on fire blog
      – the escape artist blog
      – choose FI local groups (Facebook and in person meetings outside of covid)
      – Alan Donegan’s blog and initiatives

    • John says:

Reddit impersonal finance and money saving expert but userbase is more varied

      • KBuffett says:

All good suggestions, thanks. EIS/SEIS is great. Coupled with the current Super Deduction and R&D credits, it’s a great time to be in business. Meeting the right people, is what I find difficult.

On a other note, I’ve been approached by a local property development to enter a JV. Seems like they make decent returns!

        • JDB says:

The names I mentioned above all used to organise events that were great for meeting investors and companies. Also some of the VCT AGMs were good for meeting people. I haven’t been to any SFC Capital (startup funding club) events but I hear good things and the business model is very much built on investor/company networking and info sharing. You are right to want to meet people if you are going to investor, but be prepared to see a lot of overpriced rubbish amongst the gems.

  • ARC says:

    Hi all,
I recently got the Capital On Tap card using the headforpoints code. I was wondering if anyone has tried paying a company VAT bill with it? I know there is a surcharge for using a credit card on the HMRC website, but cannot find the surcharge percentage to work out if it is cost efficient.

    • tony says:

Doesn’t it calculate the surcharge when you go to make the payment?

AIUI, it’s just passing on the fee they pay (which is dependent on the first 4 or 6 digits of the card). It’s no longer a case of 1.5% or whatever.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Work out if it is worth fronting it with Curve.

      • KBuffett says:

Do Curve provide receipts for the Metal charges so that it’s simple to reclaim the costs via a business?

    • Richster says:

I pay my VAT and PAYE on COT via Curve metal. The fee in that case is 0.1% (or, in numbers, £1 for every £1000 ) Nice little earner 🙂

    • estrangeiro8 says:

I’ve paid a VAT bill using the Capital on Tap card directly, and from memory the fee for HMRC was around 1.95%. Curve Metal might be the way to go.

  • Sambe says:

I asked about this last time it was stated but nobody replied: there are still claims being made that BA lets you cancel/change at any time for any reason, and that with BA holidays you only need to pay the deposit anyhow. However, the BA website seems clear that a) you need to give 3 weeks’ notice; b) deposit is due 3 weeks before holiday – a very different proposition and in fact rather a lot of notice in current circumstances (see Portugal…). Why is their old policy, which was much more generous, being advertised here still? Did I miss something about when there is no notice required?

    • Harry T says:

During covid, you’ve always had until the three week payment deadline to cancel or change your mind and just take the deposit as a voucher.

      • Sambe says:

I feel fairly confident Book with Confidence used to be until check-in or something similar. Holidays may have been different.

    • WaynedP says:

I’ve challenged this before when I’ve seen it, based on my own experience booking a BA Holiday in the sale earlier this year @Sambe.

T&Cs were clearly spelled out to me on the call and confirmed later in writing.

Since at least 3rd Feb 2021, BA Holiday punters like me must choose, no later than 3 weeks before departure, to either pay full outstanding balance, or trigger a FTV, or risk losing deposit if you leave it later than that.

Not sure exactly when the T&Cs changed, but anyone claiming otherwise is simply misinformed.

This only applies to BA Holidays, defined as adding car hire or hotel to your flights at time of booking.

Book With Confidence T&Cs remain more generous for flight-only bookings. For now.

      • Sambe says:

Ah, but a FTV would be fine, and that’s what I’ve seen discussed in recent newsletters I believe. Can you take a FTV at any time?

        • Sambe says:

For holidays: “Date changes must be made, or cancellation (in exchange for a voucher) must be requested at least three weeks prior to travel. Less than three weeks’ notice will be accepted if new UK government rules are introduced within this time that prevent your trip or require you to quarantine in a designated hotel on your return.”

That seems to imply 3 weeks’ notice even for voucher, not great, but at least an exception for UK government changing rules. The flights terms are less explicit still, maybe you can still get a voucher at any time? I’m ready this page:

          https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/incident/coronavirus/flexible-booking

I’m not really sure I understand the difference between changing and cancelling, in both cases receiving a voucher and pretty similar terms.

        • WaynedP says:

No, that’s the point. You lose your right to trigger a FTV beyond 3 weeks to departure.

Since pretty early into the pandemic (as I recall), BA reduced the “full outstanding balance must be paid” deadline from 5 weeks before departure to 3 weeks. Thereafter, you have always had to pay full remaining BA Holiday balance by 3 weeks before departure.

But I’m fairly sure that at one point (I reckon possibly about last six months of 2020, give or take) you still had the right to trigger a FTV on a BA Holiday on same terms as other flights, which I think is at least 24 hours before departure. Obviously that would have meant FTV for full cost of holiday if triggered after you’d paid the remaining balance at 3 weeks before cut-off.

Latest terms remove pax discretion to voluntarily trigger a FTV on the full cost of a BA Holiday in the 3 weeks before departure. You’re still (understandably) alright if BA cancel the flight/holiday or govt regs disallow travel or country is placed on red list and requires designated hotel quarantining.

    • ChrisC says:

      Who is making these claims?

Are you sure they are referring to holidays and not just flight only bookings as the T&Cs and legislation are different depending on what you are talking about.

And a holiday is a flight + hotel or car booking. I’ve seen people try to argue that a flight only booking is a holiday because they are going on holiday!

BA Hols policy was always if you cancelled before the balance is due then you’d lose the deposit. That is currently 3 weeks before travel but I’m sure in the past it was longer.

It is now if you cancel before the balance is due you can have a voucher. This is a huge improvement.

      This is also current policy

“Date changes must be made, or cancellation (in exchange for a voucher) must be requested at least three weeks prior to travel. Less than three weeks’ notice will be accepted if new UK government rules are introduced within this time that prevent your trip or require you to quarantine in a designated hotel on your return.”

So within the 3 weeks between paying the balance and the flight there are aditional protections that do not normally apply.

      • Sambe says:

It seems like it might still be the case that you can cancel flight-only for a voucher at any time. I find the BA page a little confusing/duplicated. A recent HfP newsletter stated:

“That said, as long as the ‘Book With Confidence’ guarantee is still in place, you would also have the option of making the final payment and then cancelling the entire holiday for a British Airways voucher valid until April 2023.”

I think you are confirming that this is not true, unless the reason is UK government rule changes (which was also my interpretation)?

        • Anna says:

Up till 3 weeks before you travel, you can get back anything you’ve paid towards your BA Holiday booking in the form of a FTV.

For example, I booked a package to Dubai last year, cancelled and got £350 back as an FTV. I then booked a holiday to Miami, and paid the £350 deposit (you can’t pay this with a FTV), then applied the Dubai FTV so had paid £700 in total. I’ve recently cancelled the MIA trip and been given a FTV for £700, which I am saving for something in summer 2022 (hopefully, please!).

          • Doommonger says:

Congrats on booking your holiday, about 10 years ago I won a three day break to Gibraltar.
            Doomey.

          • Sambe says:

For context, the proceeding paragraph was:

“If you only pay the deposit now, you can walk away from your booking at any point up to three weeks before departure, which is when the final payment is due. You will lose your deposit but that is an excellent outcome compared to having to walk away from pre-paid non-refundable flights.”

The way I read this is you can’t get the voucher for the deposit (because you have to walk away) but you can pay in full and get a voucher after the 3 week deadline (since you have no reason to pay in full before then, so the second paragraph suggests the voucher is still available). My reading of the comments here and the BA page is that both of these interpretations are false: 1) you say you got a voucher for the deposit; 2) terms seem clear that voucher requires 3 weeks’ notice unless UK government intervenes.

          • Anna says:

            Did you go?!

          • ChrisC says:

“You will lose your deposit … .”

If that is from this post last week

            https://hfp2022.headforpoints.blog/2021/06/04/british-airways-launches-latest-sale/comment-page-1/#comments

then that is wrong and Rob and Rhys were told it is wrong yet for some reason failed to correct it.

It is quite clear that if you chose to cancel a holiday booking more than 3 weeks before having only paid the deposit for your trip then you can get a voucher for it.

I am sitting on 2 such vouchers at the moment.

One of which was issued to me this morning.
