Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I am planing to go NYC in October 2021,I am looking at hotels at the moment.Has anyone stayed in Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Metropolitan New York City? What is it like?I have read reviews online but it’s mixed feelings

    • Aston100 says:

I got put right off by the reviews, especially about it being in need of a refurb.
I think the only positive aspect that everyone could agree upon was the location being right next to a subway station.
It looks to be one of the cheapest branded hotels in Manhattan. There must be reason for that cheapness.

    • Jonathan says:

In January last year I stayed in Embassy Suites by Hilton (Times Square, very good room in a central location. I don’t know if you’re open to all Hilton options or you just want Double Tree, but it’s maybe worth a thought. All this assuming that US borders are open and the US is on the green list, and stays there!

    Current IHG x3 points promo..

Does a redemption booking count as a first stay? Seems from the rules it doesn’t but in reality perhaps it does. Anyone know?

    • Sandra says:

No they don’t normally. You will get points on any spend but they don’t count towards qualifying status either.

  • Colin H says:

Could someone advise re BA not providing requested meals. We were a party of 6 including children and only 2 received specifically required meals. I was genuinely upset and disappointed as this is what we pay the extra for. I put in a complaint and they responded with apologies etc. Is it worth chasing for compensation and how or do I just accept that I don’t always get what I pay for?

    • Babyg says:

i flew club and didnt get the correct meals (kids and vege), struggled but eventually they gave 5k avios per person…. but it took ages.

    • BigSi says:

Interesting just had the same issue. 2 of us were on the same booking and were given 4k avios each as a gesture of goodwill (BA silver flying WTP on cash ticket). My partner was on same flight but on separate ticket booked with Avios and BA blue, she got nowt!

    • Tracey says:

Do you mean the extra to fly with BA or that you paid real extra £££ for a meal that wasn’t delivered? If the former 5k Avios per meal is standard.

    • Michael C says:

Happened to me with Singapore Airlines and they gave me SIN$75 on the spot to spend on their duty-free magazine products!

  • John Gallagher says:

Spending over £50k on Hilton Barclaycard
Anyone know how long it takes Barclaycard to review monthly spend over £50k and transfer points to HH? (I mistakenly went over the £50k audit threshold)

  • David D says:

For those of you with Flying Blue accounts, the Double XP offer is back from the 1st July to the 31st December 2021. Only on AF or KL marketed flights.

  • Anna says:

Speaking of Ryanair (earlier), they seem to be charging more if you rebook than for a new flight – very naughty.

    • Harrier25 says:

Wouldn’t expect anything less. It’s about time the authorities got tough with Ryanair…but unfortunately I fear they won”t.

      • kitten says:

Easyjet has done the same although the method was a different one.

  • Phil W says:

Yep. They seem more bothered about those than the horrlicks they’ve made of Shop Small.

  • Harrier25 says:

On the back of the disgraceful actions of O’Leary, I feel I should give credit to easyjet. They cancelled our return flight from Madeira on Saturday afternoon making it impossible for us to fly out tomorrow morning. We requested the refund on Saturday afternoon at 3pm and the funds were credited back to my Amex card on Monday morning. Thank you easyjet! 👍

    • yorkieflyer says:

Ryanair on the other hand have maintained service throughout the pandemic on key routes and have not cancelled at short notice unlike Easyjet and Jet2. A January FR flight I was on had 17 pax, all credit it to them for keeping links for essential travel
