We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • James says:

Did I dream I read an article on here about all short haul BA aircraft now having Wifi?

    • SJ says:

Can’t confirm if all aircraft do. But all my recent short haul BA flights have had wifi available

      • James says:

I’m almost sure I read they did, but the A319 I’m on now up to Aberdeen has it missing.

        • AJA says:

How are you typing on this website if you’re only the plane now and not connected via wifi?

      • Sukes says:

Recent backwards & forwards from Belfast city have had wifi advertised onboard by crew. Didn’t bother testing whether it worked tho.

    • Rob says:

      Yes you did.

  • Aaron says:

Has anyone had any experience of adding a Day 8 test to a Day 2/ Green booking. I had booked my green test with Atruchecks but now need to upgrade to the amber test as well. I think I will need a new PLF reference.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Randox sell a day 8 test only for £43

You can add multiple bookings to the PLF I believe.

      • James VICKERS says:

Do you get the reference for the PLF upon purchase with Randox?

  • NP says:

Need some advice on the Gold Card. Was a previous Platinum holder that downgraded to Gold last May. Have now been charged the gold fee, I’m thinking about options and wanted to confirm whether:
    1. I could upgrade back to Plat and get 20,000 Membership points from the offer on the website?
    2. Potentially haggle a retention bonus, have seen it mentioned a few time here for Plat, has anyone bagged one for gold.
    3. or I guess just cancel and be referred back to Gold in a few months by my OH. I know I won’t get any bonus points but will I have to pay the annual fee for my new ‘first’ year?

    • KBuffett says:

Jumping on the back of this, are upgrade bonuses available via live chat for moving from Gold Charge to Platinum Charge?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

How about, referring the OH for gold and you cancel to wait it out for the big sign up bonuses?

There’s a targeted 32,000 MR sign up bonus at the moment

    • TGLoyalty says:

      1) is now once in a lifetime so not available if you have done before
      2) phone and ask I was given 20k to keep my gold charge after downgrading last year
      3) you can do that anyway after 2 🙂

      • Harry T says:

To add to 2), it seems retention offers are for gold range from 10-20k, so it’s well worth asking. If they ask why you are considering cancelling, mention the fee and being unable to currently use the travel benefits.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

          + 1

And when they start reading off the script about the benefits get frustrated and say you already know all this, your calling to see if there is anything they can do to help

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Also part of the script is to offer to pay the fee monthly, just say but that is still the same price. Why would I do that

  • TheInsiderFly says:

Looking at new phone contracts. Does anyone know if Three accept Amex to pay monthly bills? Current with Vodafone who do allow this.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

      Yes, they accept Amex.

    • David D says:

I know you can’t setup a direct debit using a credit card in the same way as a debit card. How does this work with Vodafone bills? Are you receiving the bill monthly and then going online and paying with Amex?

    • Lumma says:

Three charge extra if you want to pay by a method other than direct debit – think it’s £5 a month

      • Alex says:

I have three – I just pay all of it off on Amex minus £1 so the DD stands if I ever forget. Never had any issues or extra charges due to it

  • Kevin C says:

With apologies if it’s been mentioned but Amazon seem to be doing their version of own shop small. Spend £10 with small businesses between now and 20th June and get £10 credit for Amazon Prime day.

    • SteveJ says:

      Prime members only AFAIK

    • Rob says:

Yes they are, they sent us an email. Quite a bit of Amazon stuff going on, I will start dripping it into Bits.

  • Yorkie Aid says:

Totally OT but for any theatre junkies on here O2 Priority is offering £80 of Theatre Tokens for £40 at the moment. Don’t hang around though because the codes go quickly.

    • Kevin C says:

Thanks, just ordered. There are various other theatre offers on the app.

    • Aston100 says:

      I’m not with o2.
Are there any theatre offers I can access through other schemes?
I’m aware of the 5% ATG offer on various Amex cards, but was hoping for something better.

      Thanks.

      • Yorkie Aid says:

I’m not aware of any other offers. And it looks like all the O2 codes have already gone for this batch of theatre tokens. They ran it about six weeks ago too so hopefully it might run again soon. You can easily get Priority with a £10 investment in a PAYG SIM. Once you’ve registered the app with the verification code text you don’t need to use the SIM at all. In order to keep getting the offers you just need to top it up once every 12 months which you can do with Airtime rewards credit. Gets you a free Nero Coffee every week if nothing else so easily pays for itself 12 times over.

    • aDifferentSimon says:

      ah shucks, sold out.

  • Grant says:

Planning a site seeing trip to London with the kids (6 & 4) at the beginning of the school summer holidays. I booked two single night stays at the Park Plaza County Hall in the recent promo, but keen to hear of any other similarly well located hotels which offer good family room options. IIRC we’ve booked a studio double at County Hall – bedroom plus sofa bed.

Would also welcome family friendly dining options nearby, with a preference for anything that isn’t the usual chains we see everywhere.

    Thanks

    • Grant says:

      *sight, even.

    • Axel Heyst says:

London Hilton Bankside has Family rooms, 2 rooms that adjoin for around £250 per night. Borough Market nearby. You could use the £50 Amex Hilton offer of you have on any of your cards.

Ive got it on 3 cards, so doing three nights.

Also trying Kimpton to be beside British Museum.

    • Rob says:

County Hall works well, kids will appreciate being next to the Eye and lots of family focussed restaurants within 2 minutes walk.

      • Kevin C says:

Marriot had a family get second room half price offer last time I looked.

      • Leo says:

My sister stayed there this weekend with kids as it happened – junior suite. Said it was great.

    • Anna says:

Don’t forget to pre-book your slots for everything in advance!

    • Grant says:

      Thanks all, very helpful

      • Sukes says:

Copthorne Tara directly behind Kensington high st tube station. Family Room is two bedroom/two bathrooms with connecting door, located on the upper floors. On a gd day on booking.com or Amex travel you cd get it for as little as £90.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Have a look literally across the road at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge. That bit newer/nicer than County Hall, although I wouldn’t pay a massive premium.

If you want more interesting and much cheaper food options than these hotels. then head East under the traintracks on Westminster Bridge Road and take a first left after the tracks into Lower Marsh (pedestrianised).

Barbarella’s there is a traditional greasy spoon (you know your kids will love it), while ScooterCafe and Greensmith’s are both a bit more artisan.

  • Russell Evans says:

Do Nectar points expire for inactivity? AwardWallet are telling me they’re due to expire soon but some searches tell me they don’t expire. Am I correct to leave them or should I credit something/move them? Many thanks

    • Grant says:

12 months of no activity IIRC

    • AJA says:

I thought that they did expire after 1 year of inactivity

But just did a search and found this:

      9. Points have no expiry date but are lost if the relevant Nectar Account is closed or the Nectar programme ends. Where points are redeemed for a Voucher carrying a specified cash discount or benefit, the Voucher will have an expiry date specified on it and will be subject to any other terms and conditions stated on the Voucher or otherwise publicised.

      • Swiss Jim says:

Why run the risk? Buy £1 chocolate bar / fruit as you wish at Sainsburys… Harder of course if you live overseas but if you buy my shopping for me online you could use your Nectar card for that…

        • Russell Evans says:

          I live abroad

          • Paul Pogba says:

Could you buy something cheap via ebay.co.uk? from a local supplier?

          • AJA says:

Not sure if you can as you live abroad but try signing up to Nectar Canvass. You seem to get a minimum of 2NP even if you get screened out of a survey. They automatically sweep to the Nectar account two working days later.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

They changed the T & Cs a while ago, I think there is now an expirery date or a date when your account just gets deleted. Only if you agreed to the new T & Cs

    • Navara says:

Move them to Avios then back again when needed
