We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone know what’s going on with Hampton’s and breakfast currently? I went to Liverpool last month, and they’d swapped their usual hot offer for sausage/bacon breakfast muffins which were great.

I’m in Blackpool today and they seem to have supplanted the whole thing for a disappointing, watered down version of what they had done previously, which you had to book and then face a huge queue for.

Neither are doing waffles any more.

Frankly without a decent, consistent, breakfast Hampton’s offer isn’t that compelling. Or have they always been patchy and I’ve just been lucky?

Was it the Hampton in Liverpool City Centre or at the airport you visited? I stayed at the city centre one recently and thought the pre packaged bacon/sausage egg and cheese muffins were vile.

      • WillPS says:

The foil wrapped ones? I thought they were pretty good but they were piping hot both times I had them. Maybe 75% as good as one from McDonalds.

The stuff at breakfast this morning was much much worse I assure you. Obliterated sausages, scrambled eggs which were white with a hint of grey, watery and tasteless. Croissants which were anything but fresh.

Staff were pleasant but the whole thing was an absolute farce, controlling entry to the serving area but in a queue that wasn’t distanced and weaved through tables. When can this futile nonsense stop?!

The point is consistency tho, this was Hampton’s strong point and I do hope the powers that be get back to enforcing them.

“Maybe 75% as good as one from McDonalds.”

You do know most people wouldn’t take that as a positive review? 😀

    • Harry T says:

It will depend on the hotel. The Hampton in Stockton was serving a full hot and cold buffet in April, last time I stayed.

    • Jay says:

Hampton breakfast pre-covid was pretty good, good selection of hot and cold including waffles with toppings. All the Hampton’s I have stayed in recently have been shocking. Breakfast is a pre-packed affair of low quality and not edible. The only UPS of a Hampton is the free breakfast (you can no longer expect a decent room finish) and if they can’t door that well then there is no hope. Covid has been an excuse for huge cutbacks in quality, service and meeting brand standards. Many Hamptons are running on 2 or 3 max staff members in total (excluding housekeeping who are working a couple of days a week). Such a great proposition is now not worth the money.

We stayed in the Hampton Waterloo over the recent bank holiday weekend. It was our first Hampton experience so have nothing to compare it to, but from what I read breakfast seemed to have everything you could get pre-COVID bar the waffles. I had the full cooked breakfast with bagels although they did ask us to suggest a time to arrive for the Sunday & Monday morning as they expected it to be busy (and it was). Despite the this the staff were working very quickly to get the lines moving.

Didn’t have a great check in experience, was made to wait despite arriving ahead of others then were told we had been upgraded which turned out to be an accessible room with a grotty shower above the reception overlooking waterloo road. It was loud in the day so cant imagine how bad it would be in the evening. Ended up doing something we never do and went back to complain about the room.

Thankfully we spoke to someone else who agreed it was one of the worst rooms in the building and said come back in 2 hours and he’ll sort it out (we never mentioned we were gold although i’m sure he knew). Thankfully he did and we ended up on the top floor with a great view of the city and across to the Canary Wharf.

Overall we had a great stay and found the location absolutely perfect with the Jubilee line perfect for travelling around (only took me 25 mins to get to Wembley although less said about that the better!)

Had a recent stay in Hampton Glasgow WE. Hot and cold buffet, with staff serving food. Nice breakfast, and seemed more organised than Hamptons I’ve been to pre-Covid. No waffles, sadly 🙁

        • Magic Mike says:

Exeter airport still doing full hot and cold buffer, waffles remain elusive.

  • KBuffett says:

How long do the new Curve rewards retailer offers take to reflect in your account after qualifying spend?

    • Craig says:

Says 28 days, I’m at 18 and counting.

      • KBuffett says:

Thanks. I guess I shouldn’t be expecting the app to update in three hours!

  • Ja says:

Stayed at an HGI Saturday night. Paid with my Amex BAPP at checkin . 5 mins later got an email from Amex. “Thanks for shopping small”.

    Quite surprised

    • Harry T says:

I’ve had similar experience at University Arms at Cambridge and AC Belfast. The bar and restaurant were also billing as the Uni Arms, so we paid for our drinks as we had each round and alternated between the numerous Amex cards we had between the three of us to get the £5 back as many times as possible! This was last summer.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Same with the Abbey Road Bath. If you’re in the vicinity it has a decent enough bar

    • Andrew says:

The Voco St David’s also triggered Shop Small when I stayed a couple of years back.

    • Tracey says:

There isn’t a Hilton in Elstree!

    • kitten says:

get hotel to correct it – by credit back and recharge if they can still do – or at least give you something you can pass to Amex as proof if the offer expired.

I stay a lot around Elstree/St Albans. What did you think of the hotel?

      • barnaby100 says:

It was very 1980s Ramada airport hotel in design -not in a bad way. Diamond and got a nice room after booking a basic. Free car parking and friendly staff.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s on the list so shouldn’t be an issue following up with Amex ..

  • Rich says:

Further update on Prenetics/ Project Screen. Tried to take my Day 2 test yesterday. Once again, the website won’t let me register the barcode, and no support available after 5pm.

I’ve emailed them. Response: “oh it’s already activated, just send your test in”. OK, great, good job I’ve taken PCR tests before, as there are no instructions in the pack or on the website.

I’d definitely advise against Prenetics. They don’t seem to have thought the process through properly.

    • TheInsiderFly says:

Mine are all always 10s and 20s. I’d love to know if there’s anything you can do that would trigger them to offer you higher points bonuses? There must be some clever logic behind it that someone knows about…

      • TheInsiderFly says:

Supposed to be for Doommonger below of course

  • Doommonger says:

    Raspberries 90 Points
    Double cream 90 Points
    Sausage meat 80 Points
    Avocados 40 Points
    Wild Rocket 50 Points
    Unsmoked Bacon 50 Points

The usual miserable selection, less offers but better points, the 10 point choices have disappeared for me.

    Doomster

    • Sandra says:

Youve done better than me, 15 offers, 6 with 20 points the rest all 10 points. Lidl for me this week.

      • Sandra says:

*You’ve done better – before the apostrophe brigade get me!

        • Doommonger says:

Yes I agree, once the points drop off I will be back to Aldi/Lidl or Waitrose when Plat come up with another offer!

  • Gav says:

Anyone having issues logging onto NS&I this morning?

  • Scott says:

Following up from my earlier 2nd vaccination question, I rang 119 and cancelled Saturday’s appointment. Didn’t get much luck booking something new, and not sure of working hours at present in order to commit, so decided to wait.
Popped down to a local centre to try my luck and they suggested coming back at 5pm should someone have not showed. Not possible as working until later this evening.
Got home and went on the NHS website. Place 2 mins from me not even showing; next nearest place Tues 15th at the earliest; place I went to earlier, and cancelled earlier, had 9:50am on Friday. Works for me.

  • Mark says:

If I were to cancel my Amex Gold, will my priority pass be cancelled at the same time or can I use it say 1 week later?

    • KBuffett says:

IIRC, it’s cancelled straight away. Unlike hotel statuses.

    • Rob says:

Automatic, because the Priority Pass won’t swipe in the lounge if there isn’t a valid payment card ‘behind’ it to fund any extra guests.
