The HfP chat thread – Saturday 5th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Heads up to anyone departing LIS. Massive, massive queue for security atm. I arrived 70 min before departure, and after 20 min in the queue I wasn’t even halfway to the scanners. Ducked out into the fast track lane and sprinted to the non Schengen gates just in time.

    Fast track was deserted,

    • Bill says:

On the 2 occasions I have used LIS the queues have been similar

    • Jason says:

      Thanks Rich

    • James says:

Just come through. Fairly quiet now. I’m going the right way though, stamp in passport, prosecco in hand 😊

  • 1ATL says:

It looks like BA CityFlyer have postponed many of the inaugural summer services from 26/27JUN to the first week in July. Just received notification our Alicante flight outbound on 26JUN has been cancelled.

    • Oli says:

Last week my BA Cityflyer summer flight on 24th June was cancelled. Today I can see the 26/27th June flights on the same route were cancelled. They seem to be cancelling progressively

    • Richie says:

The Southampton BACF flights commenced Saturday 29th May with an arrival from Faro.

      • 1ATL says:

I said the routes that are commencing later this month (Ibiza, Palma, Alicante, Malaga, Mykonos amongst others). Today’s SOU-FAO is also the last service until the route recommences again next month.

  • 1ATL says:

From Southampton I should have included*

  • KBuffett says:

Is there a way to search previous comments?

    • Jonathan says:

I believe Rob pulled the comments search capability as it was making the site run very slowly.

      • Rob says:

Correct. There are now 600,000 comments vs about 7,000 core articles.

        • KBuffett says:

Will it be coming back? Surely it’s just a resource/infrastructure issue. Or bad planning when the site was redesigned?

Are there any timelines for a potential forum launch?

    • Barraclough says:

Since suggested a while ago in HfP I’ve been using Chrome: site: headforpoints.com (then the term for the search) with some success.

  • NC says:

Anyone else unable to access their Virgin money app this morning?

    • Andrew says:

Virgin Money Credit Card app is working fine for me.

      • The Original Nick says:

I have to uninstall the app sometimes as it doesn’t work at times for me. It’s annoying..

  • FFoxSake says:

Hilton status match – hadn’t heard anything even after 2 weeks (and one stay) so queried it, only to be told had been rejected (no notification before). Turns out I had redacted my ihg rewards number (as had also used docs for Marriott match) but Hilton require that! Lets hope better result thus time.

    • JohnT says:

Drat – rejected already saying not clear! Any hints please – used a full stay invoice with address/prices removed plus ihg app summary screenshot? Can you upload more than one of each docs?

      • SteveJ says:

Not sure why you’re redacting anything, just send the unredacted documents? Redacting your address means they can’t prove its your invoice.

      • Travel Strong says:

+1 sounds like your redacting is just being seen as a red flag and getting you turned down

    • Peggerz says:

I did the Hilton status match recently and only redacted the number of IHG points I had. Was a gold 2 days later and have completed 5 nights in the first 30 days. I have some more nights booked so expect to be Diamond at the end of the 90 period.

  • Reney says:

I know shop small isn’t as exciting as it used to be. But still surprised that there were no articles mentioning that it was starting today! I’m heading to a local butchers that I discovered at last shop small round.

    • Craig says:

Mini map on the Amex website after you login too, can’t remember seeing that before?

    • Genghis says:

Just not that exciting is it? I’ll prob head to Neals Yard and Artisan du Chocolat in Borough Market for some nice things but that’s about it.

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Borough Market is also my go to. Borough Wines (NB the pos inside the shop, not the to go drinks), Cartwright Wines, Northfield Farm and Wyndham Poultry are all pretty good and in SS.

    • mark2 says:

If it had started as one third off it would have been pretty exciting; we have just been spoiled by ‘half price’.
Just off to the farm shop to get strawberries probably picked this morning for our visitors from London. Also the artisan jeweller can expect to get extra sales. Out in the country we have a good choice of garden centres, farm shops, restaurants, butchers etc.

    • Rob says:

Forgot to be honest 🙂 Trying to have a holiday this week despite BA / Amex’s best attempts to mess it up.

    • Louise K says:

We used to have a day on it – toys for dogs from the pet shop, pre lunch drinks in the bar, lunch, then maybe a takeaway later on. Not sure we’re even going to bother this year.

      • Sandra says:

I had a reminder email yesterday from Amex with a list of suggestions within 5 miles. 2 of them i know definitely don’t take Amex (don’t think they ever did), a couple i haven’t even heard of and no description as to what they sell and the local butcher that i use and does take Amex isn’t even mentioned. They don’t do either their retailers or themselves any favours, it’s too much hassle to try anywhere new on the Amex list as it’s so unreliable. Perhaps you can pass that back with the other comments gathered last week Rob?!

        • andrew says:

The problem with some small retailers is that the address associated with their Amex account isn’t always the same as their trading address.

    • RussellH says:

Got a couple of restaurants booked for the wekend.

But currently over half the local traders are now listed on shop small. One new entry is a wedding venue with some accommodation. From their website it seems as though they do not just do B&B. Then there is the car wash in a former mining village 5 miles away which I always assumed was strictly cash only, a boarded up pub…
