The HfP chat thread – Saturday 5th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Your monthly accrual shows at the bottom of each statement and the annual total is deducted from your January bill.

    • Simon says:

Many thanks, Rob. 🙂 What happens if you have no bill in January? Does it then remain as a credit on your account? (Which could then be spirited out of one’s account.)

      • Rob says:

        No idea

      • Will says:

Remains as credit, if your feeling brave PayPal Freind’s and family to trusted other or curve card cash withdrawal.

        • Simon says:

Many thanks, Will — I think I may well give that route a bash come January. Much obliged. 🙂

  • AnotherUser says:

I’ve also stayed at Ten Hill Place pre-Covid. If you can get it at that rate, it’s a good deal 🙂

  • TheInsiderFly says:

I’m sure this happens quite a bit but had lunch today at a restaurant that was on Shop Small and they claimed they didn’t take Amex and wouldn’t accept it so had to pay with another card. Is there any use moaning to Amex about this or no point?

    • StevieKicks says:

No point, they stopped crediting for that scenario recently. They’ll just say they’ll investigate the map

    • Andrew says:

This is one of the reasons I don’t bother with shop small anymore. Amex used to be really good and pay out if you asked them but now they won’t entertain it and basically just say tough luck.

    • mark2 says:

After many disappointments I always check first.

    • stevenhp1987 says:

Just use Google/Apple Pay where they can’t see what card you’re using.

If they actually accept Amex it will just work.

      • Jonathan says:

That’s one of the best ways of hiding your Amex card, that way the cashier won’t realise you’ve intended to use an Amex card until after the transaction has processed

        • Harrier25 says:

Amex is the most expensive payment method for the retailer to accept and is slowly becoming less attractive to the user.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Except this customer wouldn’t have gone if it didn’t take Amex!

    • lumma says:

My closest pub has taken AMEX the whole time I’ve lived here, last shop small the machine didn’t accept, “we say yes to American Express” signs in the window the lot. AMEX refused to do anything about it.

  • Muhammad Abdullah says:

£43 LHR-GLA in Plus or usual off-peak RFS, what’s the best choice?

    • Harry T says:

One way? Sounds like cash is better value by far, either way.

      • Muhammad Abdullah says:

        Yes. That’s what I thought

        • Lord Doncaster says:

Yes go for cash. You’ll get avios back then as well for flying.

  • Harry T says:

If any fellow healthcare workers fancy a trip to Edinburgh this month, I’ve just noticed that the Sheraton Grand have made the HJH available for 25-27 June – beats paying £460 a night!

  • MKB says:

When we stayed last November for one night (as Spire Ambassador), I was offered a one-category upgrade. I asked how much they would charge for an upgrade to one of the front corner suites, and was given one at no extra charge.

We had room 310 which was lovely, with windows wrapping round three sides of the bed.
