The HfP chat thread – Friday 4th June

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If Player 2 has AmEx Gold Charge, can Player 1 refer P2 for Platinum Charge, will P1 receive a sign up bonus even though P2 aren’t eligible for theirs?

  • David says:

Hi any suggestions for restaurants ( that can be booked last min) near Sheraton Grand Edinburgh ?

    • Harry T says:

Six by Nico is great. The Outsider is also good.

      • David says:

Thanks Harry booked another HJH ! Upgraded already !

        • Harry T says:

Brilliant, which room have you gotten? Last time I stayed they upgraded us to a suite but the view wasn’t the best (stoop greatly appreciated the upgrade, especially with HJH prices!)

        • Harry T says:

@David nice upgrade! What status do you have with Marriott Bonvoy?

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

In my experience, their concierge is pretty good at opening up space at restaurants if you’re flexible with timings.

    • Chrism20 says:

The Huxley if you like steak and there is an excellent Nepalese called The Khukuri about ten minutes walk away towards Haymarket

    • Peggerz says:

Timberyard. Don’t miss it. 5 mins walk from hotel.

  • TJ says:

    1) I’m struggling to find info on the Gov website relating to legit reasons for “essential” travel, eg prepping property abroad for sale or let. Anyone know where this info now resides?
    2) Am I allowed to leave self isolation before a Day 8 test to travel abroad for essential reasons? I believe the answer is yes, but again can’t find the info on the Gov website.

    • mr_jetlag says:

No longer any need on outbound to declare reasons for travel, so the forms were removed from gov.uk – Google search can still bring them up.

    • Binnie says:

These reasons are no longer needed. you can travel to amber or green countries as you see fit. (Also to red countries.)

      So essential travel has disappeared.

      2) you can leave self isolation to travel abroad, for any reason, yes.

Crazy how the UK feels it is subservient to a disease it has already successfully vaccinated against.

    • Tracey says:

Check if FCDO advises ABE for the country concerned, some amber countries are ok and some are not, some are part ok and parts eg islands not. Not sure there is then a definition of ‘essential’.it’s gone from the gov.uk website as no longer required.
      2. Yes, you can.

    • TJ says:

Thx all. The essential travel question was in relation to insurance cover….some companies will cover essential travel but don’t fully define “essential”. That’s why I wanted to fall back on the original Gov guidelines.

  • Dayle says:

ROOKIE QUESTION: Sorry… The only Amex I have was the Biz Plat which is now the Gold

What’s the best card (1 player) to go for first? My Biz gold has a referral offer of 9k, can I use that?

  • Jaime says:

Will be returning to UK end of next week after spending the last 6 months in Portugal. Considering that I’ve got nailed by the green list removal, what test do I need on arrival, a PCR or antigen? Price difference is about €50 between the tests.
I am aware of the day 2 & day 8 tests after arrival, any recommendations on these tests for a Welsh resident?
    Enjoy your weekend

Looks like Wales has the same requirement for PCR tests as England but without the option of test to release on day 5.

      That’s such bad timing 😥

      • Jaime says:

        Thanks Anna
We’ve been delaying the return since portugal was removed from the quarantine list, nevertheless it was a wonderful winter spring we had, but now we need to get back for a family affair.
What is confusing about the entry requirements is that both a PCR and antigen tests are acceptable and here the difference between both can be up to €50/person
