We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Morning all.

  • Andrew says:

BA sale is launching later today if anyone wants to take a gamble and book a flight.

    • ChrisC says:

Saved £40 in cancelling and rebooking a couple of flights in the wee hours of this morning. Took about 6 hours for the new voucher(s) to come through though.

Probbaly not what they were hoping for though they still have my money lol

Not looked at repricing any of my BA hols bookings yet.

Still nothing official on BA website though,

  • Marco says:

Bit of a random question but anyone bought any Cartier / JLC watches in London recently and know what is the rough max discount?

    • Alan Todd says:

Can’t exactly answer your question, although a certain online dealer based in Mayfair has Cartier at 10% and Jaeger at 17% pretty much across the board. I’d start at 25% hoping for around 20 but would be prepared walk if seller not playing ball, as cool as some of these watches are they aren’t hard to come by at discount, and residuals are obviously weaker than certain other Swiss brands.

    • Jonathan says:

      Try Bouchon in Hatton garden ( Richard Polly ) 020 7831 7933
I think you will find he will beat any discount you can find .

    • Corey says:

Interesting data points above. I guess your ‘unofficial’ dealers can get better discounts still. My authorised dealer in London only gives around 5% for Cartier (+- depending on model).

Morning all! Has anyone else had issues with Amex Platinum Business card and getting the 100k bonus? I have had two online chats with them over the last 3 weeks and both times they have said that I was only enrolled into the rewards scheme 2 days after the date of the first statement. I should have got my bonus points and in both chats they have assured me I would get them within 5-7working days. Both times this has not happened so now a 3rd chat is looming. Pretty disappointing as normally customer service is excellent.

    • Reeferman says:

I’m having similar issue with the Amex Platinum 50k bonus. Only 20,000 has posted. Online chat said they’d check it out and revert within a few days. I heard nothing, so phoned. The agent said they’d check it as they were unaware of a 50k bonus! Again, heard nothing – so am phone again. Overall, it’s already been 2 weeks!

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

I got mine in the end after a different but similar issue. I had to hassle online chat a few times. Repeatedly sending them the confirmation Email for the application, which showed that it was well within the sign-up window, worked in the end. If it’s your 3rd round I’d send this and make it clear you will complain externally to regulators if not sorted within a week.

      • CarpalTravel says:

Thanks Savage Squirrel, will definitely bear that in mind when next speaking with them. Hoping I won’t need to go there, but feels like it should have easily been sorted by now.

Good luck Reeferman, hope you get yours sorted. :thumbup

        • Reeferman says:

          Thanks both.
Just had a phone chat – seems the last person I spoke with has added a note to say there is no record of a 50,000 points offer! Obviously incorrect.
The guy today says he thinks he recalls it and will reinvestigate.
Sadly the emails I have from Amex at the time of application do not mention any details of points at all.
Will see what happens over next couple of days – might have to ask if anyone has the offer details to hand

          • CarpalTravel says:

Not a great show. Rob usually has articles (with closure times clearly stated) about increased offers, so there may be something here? I have had a quick search but can only find it for the Gold card.

        • Reeferman says:

          Many thanks
Have just had a look back and found a HfP article on 12th April (sponsored by Amex) with the details.
Will use this is I still get no joy

  • Mark says:

    Would apprecite any help please…
I am travelling to a Green country next week. What is the cheapest pre departure pcr test and cheapest day 2 test on arrival back (I think can be lateral flow?)… north london based and flying from LHR with BA. What company and what promo codes?
    thanks in advance

    • Rhys says:

Eurofins does a fit to fly test via BA for £40.

Day 2 test can’t be lateral flow, it has to be a special Day 2 PCR. You need a lateral flow before your returning flight, however.

    • Rob says:

If I were you, I’d just book a return test at Heathrow. It’s NOT a Day 2, it’s a ‘Day 0 or Day 1 or Day 2 test’. Nothing stops you taking it in the arrivals hall, and then it is over and done with. No messing about with self-swabbing, waiting for packages, using special drop-off boxes etc.

Collinson is doing a pre-departure video test now if you don’t trust Qured (and recent reports suggest you should be wary).

      • Pete M says:

Now the question is… will it still be a green country next week? I am really not sure if there will be much of a travel industry left by the end of this, if we end up shutting countries down every two weeks like last year!

        • Jonathan says:

Asking whether or not a country is on the green list or amber (or even worse the red list) is a bit like asking ‘how long’s a piece of string?’

The way things are, it’s literally anyone’s guess is to what category a country will be in when your intended return date (range) is. The government don’t care if somewhere is a hot spot for holidays, they need the country to be of low risk, and good vaccination numbers before the country will be considered for the green list

      • Mark says:

        Thank you! Good idea

  • Vit says:

Hello all, sorry a bit random but any of you used tesco bank for home insurance? Wonder what the experiences are like. They come out the cheapest and covered all we need and also can get club add discount as well as accept amex. A bit too good to be true!?

    • Graham says:

Used them and had a successful claim for a burst pipe in our en-suite. The process was straightforward with photos, videos and quotes uploaded to a portal.

They made an assessment and paid us a cheque. This was for more than the quote as they seem to ignore this. YMMV but they were great to us.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

French connection, Byron and Free Now offers on my Amex this morning

    • Andrew says:

Free Now offer has been around for a long time – there was an article with a first time code if you search for it.

    • Kevin C says:

French Connection offer is new (10% online only).

  • Si says:

@FrustratedTraveller: Did the Sheraton allow you to refund/postpone your stay?

    • FrustratedTraveller says:

      Morning,

They’ve confirmed/advised that we can move the booking, but that the suite was only available on those dates so it would be a different/downgraded room (albeit they have yet to specify which room it would be).

      • Si says:

That’s a good result. I’m currently sitting in the restaurant eating my breakfast after spending last night in the suite 🙂

(Here tonight too. Was going see if wanted to cut a deal if they wouldn’t let you cancel your booking).

Room is very nice but the service has been exceptional and very happy, so even if a “lesser” room, will still be a lovely treat.

No sign of any spa treatments (heard before they cancelled that because of covid) but excellent value for the location and service.

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

On a related note, did the suite booking come with a complimentary spa treatment? I thought I saw mention of this when booking but can’t find anything on the website now.

      • Metty says:

When we stayed 10days or so ago there were no complimentary shave/manicure and forgot to ask about spa.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

        Thanks for the Intel.

      • Tariq says:

Think I read some suggestion in a previous post of some Afternoon Tea available?

    • FrustratedTraveller says:

They’ve confirmed that it’ll be the Deluxe room regardless of date, which I think is their entry level room offering, albeit commensurate with the price paid….
