We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Has anyone else noticed that credit card balance and available credit numbers on Creation account are always out of sync?

For my card account, these numbers have not moved even after a number of transactions have posted in last few days.

    • The Urbanite says:

There is a science to the figures shown in Creation’s online banking but it’s far too complicated to explain here!

      • Yorkie Aid says:

I’ve generally found that the balance only shows posted transactions whereas the available credit takes into account pending transactions. But some transactions using Curve aren’t always included in the pending calculation which is where it can get a bit confusing if you’re not on top of it.

    • mark2 says:

The available credit takes account of purchases and payments which do not show yet, so will normally be different.

  • Blue Mountain says:

Here is a useless data point that might make people smile/lol.
One of the Covid restrictions in NSW Aus in their recent lockdown was:
“No dancing at indoor hospitality venues or nightclubs. Weddings can still have dancing but it is strongly recommended that no more than 20 people are on the dancefloor at any one time”
Just trying to imagine how you actually police that when a really popular song comes on…??

    • mradey says:

You need a rubbish DJ who doesn’t play any really popular songs.

    • Louie says:

At least you can get married in NSW. Currently weddings are banned (except for end of life or deportation reasons) in Victoria….

      • QFFlyer says:

Deportation reasons 😂 I’m in Vic and I didn’t know that

    • IanM says:

Not any different to rules in the UK which aren’t particularly enforceable

      • Callum says:

Unlike the UK, Australia put a strong effort into enforcing their rules.

This is anecdotal, but “voluntary” compliance there was far, far higher than here as well.

        • Pete M says:

When you become a de-facto police state, that’s pretty easy I suppose.

          • Jamie says:

            Embarrassing.

          • Callum says:

While it’s certainly heading that way, I don’t think Australia is much closer in that regard than the UK is.

  • BJ says:

  • Wally1976 says:

Quick question – if I make a large transaction on my Amex Platinum and then pay it off straight away do I still get the membership rewards points? Thanks

    • Chrisasaurus says:

      Yes

      • Wally1976 says:

Thanks 😀. I presume the same for the gold credit card too?

        • mark2 says:

true of all credit cards IME, Amex, Creation, Barclaycard etc.

          • KBuffett says:

Although with Virgin & HSBC you cannot earn more points than your credit limit in any given month.

          • Memesweeper says:

@KBuffett – are you sure about HSBC? Not noticed that on my prem card

        • Andrew says:

Yes there is no requirement to leave a balance for a period of time on any card in order to earn points/Avios etc. The transaction triggers the points.

          • Wally1976 says:

            Good to know, thanks all

          • meta says:

@KFBuffet that is not the case with HSBC. I have spend 4x the limit in some months and earned points on everything.

    • Rob says:

      Yes

  • David says:

For arrivals in Scotland, do you have to use the provider linked on the Scottish Government website:

    https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-international-travel-quarantine/pages/red-amber-and-green-list-countries/

    “Green list countries and areas:
Before travelling to Scotland from a green list country or area, you must:
    -complete a passenger locator form
    -take a COVID-19 test
    – book and pay £88 for a COVID-19 test – you should take this test within 2 days of arriving in Scotland”

    That £88 links to here:
    https://quarantinehotelbookings.ctmportal.co.uk/

But they only offer postal kits, etc. Was hoping for a walk in test in Edinburgh.

    (Green country arrival).

    • Connor says:

“You must buy the test from this website.”
Seems like a load of rubbish though, nobody will even be checking, at least they didn’t for me last week.

Nicky costing us more money as usual.

  • Andy says:

Why is there only one article today?

    • Bobri says:

      Wait for 10am

    • Andrew says:

      BIG news!!

      • Chrisasaurus says:

I don’t believe Big was ever mentioned this time so don’t get excited!

        • Andrew says:

I was being a bit sarcastic – like Friday’s “HUGE” news

          • Chrisasaurus says:

Fridays news was genuinely huge. It doesn’t help me hugely but it will make a significant difference to a lot of peoples strategy ongoing in particular and is for now at least a big improvement for those with very fixed dates and routes in mind who can’t rely on seats dripping in over the year

          • BJ says:

Let’s just hope that Rob’s propensity to adjectives (or absence thereof) is inversely proportional to the significance (and desirability!) of his news 🙂

My guess it is airline, bank or credit card related. It has to be significant enough to merit a timed announcement and an embargo on release. Also has to be good news, bad news is usually quietly released or unannounced.

          • KBuffett says:

Have you ever been satisfied with any offer or article?

      • Patrick Cold says:

It`s amusing that some don`t see the magnitude of this development – for some it is an absolute game-changer. Not for me, as it happens, but that is not the point.

        • BJ says:

Absolutely not, only thing game changing is the scale of the numbers of disappointed BAEC members at midnight or 1am T-355.

          • Peter K says:

Or potentially double the number of happy people at midnight GMT as more seats to book.

I think that it was big news and I don’t need 4 seats anywhere. The chance of getting seats where you want has massively increased. Extra economy seats for example in Europe is a big plus. PE long haul likewise.

“Super popular” destinations will always be hard to get seats on. But merely “popular” ones will be much easier.

          • Harry T says:

Agree with BJ, really don’t consider the boost in initial BA redemption availability to be much of a game changing benefit.

          • BJ says:

On reflection, I am happy to concede @Peter has a point too. Loads of flights daily +2 CW +2 WTP +4 WT, so yeah loads of happy campers … nearly all is forgiven Rob! The biggest question though is how it relates to the overall number of award seats released in a year.

          • Genghis says:

For us having 4 guaranteed CW seats is a “game changer”. I never struggled too much at t-355 to get popular route seats (e.g. CPT) as a couple, but now with a little one, there was of course previously no opportunity to get CW as only 2 seats were available. We’re booked in Y to CPT for the new year – direct being better than non-direct etc. Going forward, we at least have the opportunity to book J.

    • Danny says:

      See yesterday’s “Bits” article.

  • Laura says:

    Slightly random/useless observation.

Morrisons overcharged me by £3.50 over the weekend. I’d paid on my Amex but they refunded in cash, so I got an extra tiny contribution to my intro spend. Hahah

    • Louise says:

      Nice one 🙂

At Morrisons I put £500 of Amazon cards/ vouchers on my Amex but when I checked the activation slip, it hadn’t worked for some reason. They didn’t seem to notice when I got my refund back on my debit card.

      • BJ says:

Just checked my transactions and realised I am missing over 4000 FC miles from the 8/£ Morrisons offer. They have not even tracked and I doubt I’ll get them as it is quite obvioys from my cc statements it was giftcards which I think were technically excluded. Must pay closer attention going forward.

        • Andrew says:

Have you registered the card with more than one system?

Realised last week that I’d accidentally added my Virgin Money card to both PAW and Airtime. Card clash meant that I missed out on about £50 of instore with David Clulow. (Although I did get it on Virgin Money offer itself.)

        • Paul Pogba says:

I didn’t get my FC miles, I raised a query and was told it wasn’t an active promotion on my account. I’m certain it was but I have no screen shot or anything to prove otherwise.

          • BJ says:

Have the same issues, worked like a dream last year so I got lazy this year and now caught out. I’ll raise it but I know my chances are slim.

      • Laura says:

Nice! That’s definitely better than my £3.50.

        • ABC says:

I had the same, bought £500 of amz and never activated, they did notice the card but I used a different one for it, so lost a few points on that one but kept the CB. My beardy points never tracked either…. think something is up with that never had an issue before, but don’t really have much trouble getting those it is just spending them that is difficuit!

        • Louise says:

Thanks – but not much in it @ 0.8p/ point, I make that £4!

I aim to get a bit better than 0.8p of value, though.

  • Andrew says:

Nothing interesting in the Amex offers for June 1st – still no sign of that Marriott offer

    • YC says:

Regent st offer is interesting in that I’ve not seen this location type offer before. Also Apple is on it too

      • Ja says:

Any ideas if this is cumulative?. If I spend the amount split between 3 shops will I get the £20 back or must it be in one shop?.

      • Blair says:

What card is the Regent St offer appearing on?

      • Youllnever says:

Does anyone know what this line of T&C means for the offer?

“Offer is not valid on any orders made on the shop floor via staff merchant iPads/tablets.”

I was under the impression that’s the only way to purchase stuff in an Apple Store?

    • Andrew says:

      What’s the offer?

      • meta says:

Most Regent street shops are on the list. Spend £120 get £20 back. Not that exciting either.

    • Andrew says:

Really pleased with the Regent Street one, are there any shops not on the list?

Wonder if it was coordinated by the Crown Estate? In which case, we might see other shopping centres that are owned by the estate in upcoming weeks.

    • Andrew says:

Kudos for whoever finds Amazon gift cards for sale first!

    • KBuffett says:

You say nothing interesting, but miss the Regent St offer. Are you still waiting for the Marriott £400 offer to appear on your card 🤣

      • Andrew says:

There are several Andrews on here. No Regents St offer on my card, so didn’t miss it, just don’t have it. But I’m sure you’ll use that to make another jibe.

        • BJ says:

Wish you guys would work out who is number 1…

          • Polly says:

Agree, that made me laugh. We had that same issue with all the Tom’s years ago, until one of them took on Tom1, persuading him to use his avios to upgrade to F from nyc to lhr…fun simplistic times in our hobby…

    • Tracy says:

Just a data point on the Hilton offer. My offer is spend £200 get £50 back. I stayed twice at a hotel not on the offer list and in total over the 2 nights spent £160. £50 credited today, very odd but not complaining….

      • BJ says:

Sometimes hotels not on the list are charged by other hotels on the list with the same owner. However, that still does not fully explain your good fortune – enjoy.

        • Tracy says:

Thanks, just hoping it might happen again, got 5 nights booked from Friday at a hotel not on the list but spend over £200 🤞

      • Dave says:

The list is way out of date. Many locations are not even Hilton any longer, eg DT Carcassonne. DT Aberdeen treetops was flattened for new houses.
