The HfP chat thread – Sunday 30th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hilton roll over nights question..

Do elite night credits always roll into the following year? I had a feeling Hilton had ended it, but I know they rolled over all 2020 nights into 2021. But will excess night credits in 2021 roll over into 2022?

For instance only 30 nights are needed this year for diamond. So if I finish the year on 50, will I start next year with 20 nights?

    • John says:

Yes I believe so, but normally only up to 60 and for one year i.e. you can only earn 2 future years of status in one year

      • Ian M says:

Nice, so if I was to finish this year on 90 nights I would have diamond status until January 2024?!

  • Oz_Traveller says:

    Dilemma…. I need advice…

Option 1 – use my IHG Ambassador weekend voucher for London IC – cost c£650; points c25,000

Option 2 – stay @ the Trafalgar St James (Hilton) – cost £544; points c21,000 (based on HH bonuses)

Due to circumstances I can only do one option.

    Other factors –
I am spending big @ Hilton to gain Diamond status for 2021 and 2022 (incl. rollover nights). In my humble opinion the Hilton status far outweighs those offered by IHG, I also prefer the Hilton hotels over the IHG hotels.

So do I waste the IHG Ambassador weekend voucher or use it and gain 20,000 points I may or may not use at a considerable cost?

    Thanks all

I much prefer smaller hotels so bear this in mind if you are different. TSJ is my favourite points hotel in London. Going again in Oct if NFL goes ahead. Location is ridiculously good, rooftop bar takes advantage of this, and either they’re generous with upgrades or base rooms are nice (no idea which; not one to scour room charts). Pre COVID cooked to order brekky was great and included for golds.

Are you sure you can’t use the IC weekend voucher at a decent Eur IC like Porto or the Amstel or the other one in Portugal (not Lis, the other one). It can also be used at Kimptons, such as Edinburgh, any night of the week.

Just seen £100 sign up with the Amex Amazon Card which i am sure is a new thing. Guessing there will be an article soon

    • Rob says:

Yes, they are talking about booking some other promotional stuff around it so we will tie it all together in the same week.

Shame they don’t pay us per sign-up as it will fly off with a £100 incentive.
