We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Morning all, sorry, having read HFP for years I should know this but the spend £200 get £50 credit back offering is ending tomorrow. I have a trip where unfortunately the Leicester HI is the only option. I’ll hit the £200 spend but will I still get the IHG points does anyone know from experience? I’m guessing not but figure £50 off is better than a bottle of water & chocolate bar and a few thousand points for the stay? Thanks 🙂

    • Adam says:

Should have said Amex Travel offer.

      • Ikaz says:

No IHG points if you book with Amex, they might give you a welcome drink if you qualify

    • Rob says:

Unlikely – will be treated as a third party booking.

    • Chris says:

The Marriott or the new Novotel in Leicester are FAR better than the Holiday Inn.

      • Adam says:

Hi Chris. I agree, unfortunately the Marriott lounge is closed plus a little too far out (need to be central) and after Accor stripped all my points away during the pandemic I refuse to stay at any of their hotels out of principle. But completely agree with you.

        • Chrisasaurus says:

All true – I would also add we liked the Holiday Inn a lot but they removed the pool without prior notice and as a result of the very disappointed kiddos that caused, they’re dead to me…

  • Tracy says:

I need to book a ferry journey with either p&o or stenaline. Are there any discounts or points opportunities I am missing?

    • HughM says:

      Stena 10% P&O 5% with AA membership

      • Tracy says:

not a member of the AA unfortunately

        • KBuffett says:

          It costs peanuts to join.

          • Tracy says:

how do you join for peanuts, thought you had to buy breakdown cover?

          • HughM says:

AA subscription is £39 for uk roadside, get a free £20 shopping voucher, and don’t forget to cancel a year later. I’m not familiar with the Ireland routes and prices. Not too sure I would bother for one trip.

    • Sandra says:

Defence Discount card (services/ex service & MOD personnel) 5% with P & O, probably same with Blue Light card too

    • Mr. AC says:

If you have Tesco Clubcard vouchers, P&O is one of the partners where you can get the best redemption rate – £10 in vouchers is £30 in P&O credit.

      • Tracy says:

only got £11.50 in vouchers lol

        • Lady London says:

you can still part-pay. look into the pricing before you convert the Tesco vouchers as sometimes the Tesco deal means locked into a worse price or worse conditions.

  • Cat says:

Hi all, utterly and completely O/T, but @LadyLondon – I just wanted to let you know that I’m back in the New Forest with Hille, for the first time in 2 years! The dawn chorus this morning was awesome!

    • Lady London says:

Grrrr wondered if you were there. Jealous.

      • Cat says:

Get your Hille back out, go for a jaunt around the Cotswolds or something! If there’s ever a year for a camping staycation, this is it!

    • Lyn says:

      Sounds wonderful, Cat.

  • Sukes says:

There’s been a few posters here considering a leisure trip to NI. The Ulster American Folk Park museum in Omagh, NI has free entry on sat 12 & sun 13 June as part of National Lottery Open Week. Each party needs to bring a lottery ticket or scratch card, and entry slot needs to be pre booked via the park website (scroll to bottom of page) – currently there’s lots of availability.

It’s an open air large scale park that re-enacts the experience of Irish migrants to the US & is highly recommended. Original properties from the 1700s were painstakingly moved into the park to create it. Best bit is you board a full scale replica of an immigrant boat & a few mins later you disembark into the ‘New World’ after a v speedy crossing of the Atlantic…

    • Tracy says:

thanks for that, I’m going over and will be there that weekend, sounds good. any other suggestions?

    • Lady London says:

Fantastic. Americans who have it are so proud of their Irish ancestry.

      • Sukes says:

One of my favourite conversations was with a taxi driver in Chicago who didn’t believe me when I told him St Patrick’s Day was about a real person & a religious holiday for us…he’d only ever thought it was about booze & dyeing the river green….Tracy glad my post was of interest. There was a gd thread here a few wks ago about NI wkend ideas I’ll try & find it but don’t hold your breath! For me giants causeway, dunluce castle, carrick a rede bridge & bushmills distillery are all fantastic & at the coastline. Just remember to pack clothes for all seasons ; ) In Belfast I always enjoy Crown Bar saloon for pint & pub food, Ulster museum & its botanic gardens, titanic museum & slipways, & black cab taxi tour of the Troubles. We also have some great national trust properties if you have a car and can get around – mount Stewart house & gardens are beautiful.

        • Tracy says:

Thanks Sukes, originally from Ballymena and Mum now lives in Portrush, so I have done the usual tourist sites when younger, was looking for some suggestions I may never have been to. Never been to the Ulster American Folk Museum or Mount Stewart House so thank you for the suggestions….

          • Sukes says:

Ah, enjoy your trip back home! Crumlin Road Gaol might interest, former prison turned tourist attraction that gets highly reviewed. My mum has toured it & found it so well done she wants to return. Castle Ward also a v nice national trust property, although I think they might be closed on & off for filming.

  • Sarah says:

What’s the name of the app that allows you to store all loyalty account details etc? It’s been mentioned on here before.

  • Spaghetti Town says:

Hi all. Someone on here mentioned to me you could get a supplementary virgin card, do i just apply through the app?

    • Josh says:

I think you have to call them however I’d love to know because when I asked over the phone the person was confused and had no idea what I was as talking about!

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Call an additional card, afaik only Amex use supplementary nomenclature

  • jek says:

Is something going on between VS and Delta? Last year I had no problem on redeeming VS on DL in Delta One (LHR MSP), but now I cannot find ANY Delta availability for the whole 355 days – it is all going to KLM/AF!

    • Colin says:

Love to know the answer to this myself jek. Similarly am struggling to find Delta One availability on routes where it was always available previously – even single seats. Would love Rob/Rhys to do an article on this as Delta One (in my opinion) was always the premier points redemption in terms of pure value per point …. after accounting for taxes/charges of course which are/were negligible on many Delta redemptions.

  • Martin says:

    Morning everyone,
Advice please as I’m sure I can, but I am sure someone will confirm on here? I have 4 Avios flights to Prague booked in July and they are already rebooked from last year. They have just cancelled the inbound flight and rebooked me into another 3 hours later which is not convenient. Can I cancel the whole trip for a full refund of 140 plus Avios now and start again next year as Id rather have a full refund than a voucher ? Thank you

    • Matt says:

If they’ve cancelled the flight you can get a full refund.

      • Harry T says:

If any flight in the same PNR is cancelled then you are entitled to a refund for the entire itinerary. That is a refund of Avios and cash, not just a voucher.

        • Martin says:

Thought so. Thank you very much for the clarity both of you. It’s appreciated
