The HfP chat thread – Saturday 29th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’m not going to write a review – there’s been a few – but thanks, thanks, and thanks again to whoever posted the promo rate for the Sheraton Grand (Genghis?)

    • Harry T says:

But seriously, how was it? It wasn’t Genghis, but I can’t recall who it was.

      • Ed says:

        Apb??

        • Memesweeper says:

@Rob I think you need to get a party organised just so I can buy @APB a pint.

      • Memesweeper says:

It was fantastic to be honest.

The hotel has tried really hard to maintain the Art Deco original features. The result in the room and the common areas is really cool. Even the old style half-moon “arm” style lift floor indicators work. It’s a great place to meet, eat, relax, or work. The room is huge and has old things you just don’t get anymore, like a really large bath. A proper drinks cabinet is a great touch as well.

If I was to nit-pick the food and beverage offering is not as good as some of its 5* neighbours.

The location is superb for the west end and Mayfair, and Green Park is your front garden. Staff and service consistently very good without being fussy. I’d stay again in a heartbeat, but the room is not something I’ll be dropping a grand a night on. They have more modest digs that will meet my needs for a future London visit.

I stayed last winter and felt very much the same 😊. Was upgraded to a suite which was very stylish. Hope you saw lots of dogs in the bar!

          • Roger W says:

Crikey I booked my Labrador into the dog- walkers that weekend. Can I bring her and save £60. Or do you mean the sort of dogs propping up every bar in Dubai?

        • Josh says:

How was the free breakfast? Staying at the end of June!

          Can’t wait!

    • BSI1978 says:

Are you referring to the ‘intern promo rate’ or is this something else unrelated…?

      • Memesweeper says:

“Reopening offer” I’d like to think of it as 😁

  • SM says:

Question about the Melia offer on Amex Plat – booked a flex rate which is above the threshold to trigger the offer, however the Melia White House isn’t in the list of participating hotels, online spend counts too, only the Melia Strand is on the list, any suggestions on how to use this offer? will Amex actually know we stayed at the Melia White House and not the Strand? Thanks.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes they will know as the hotels have different merchant codes.

  • Max says:

Travel to the US. Does anyone know if flights get cancelled often these days? Do I have a better chance flying the scheduled flight with BA or VA?

    • Josh says:

Yes they do. arrived here last week and my return from Seattle was cancelled. Seems like BA is best for cancellations but unsure who’s best for guaranteed flights

    • Lady London says:

BA has a greater choice to book you onto something else due the Transatlantic Alliance if they cancel your flight. For a start you’d have all the AA flights. VS would simply not have such a range of alternatives to put you on quickly instead, I would suspect.

      • ChrisC says:

VS have Delta plus also KL and AF via AMS and CDG respectively.

      • Tom says:

Apart from Delta, Air France and KLM… some pretty big players to overlook!

  • David says:

Spoke to a BA person at You First today and they reckon increased availability of first redemption will be next – once they see how club etc goes.

  • Spaghetti Town says:

Hi all. Can you get a supplementary card holder on virgin mastercard?

  • Lady London says:

Virgin will not have the same easy no-pain revenue-sharing arrangement with dl,kl,af as BA has with AA in particular, followed by IB and AY.

Due to the Transatlantic Alliance in particular and also all being in Oneworld.

Virgin isn’t even in Skyteam so for sure a reroute will cost them more. Whereas a reroute on Transatlantic Alliance partners costs BA precisely nothing so no pain. Plus for HfP readers we are most likely to be flying back to the UK, particularly London, and KL and AF will all reroute via Paris or Amsterdam.

So I stand by it. Taking a BA flight gives you a higher chance of an easy no-pain reroute if your flight is cancelled, than Virgin flight even on Transatlantic.
