Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 28th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Since this blog, from my understanding, has readers in the finance/banking industry, anyone come across this website yet? https://www.juni.co/

    • KBuffett says:

I hadn’t come across it, but it looks really cool. And they’ve addressed the number one issue with FinTech – customer service.

Question on rebooking cancelled BA flights with lap infant.

I’m booked on Avios to Croatia for mid-June with my wife and then 23 month old son. This morning our flight was cancelled by BA.

As BA cancelled our flights, I’m aware we can rebook for free for later in the summer, regardless of peak dates or Avios availability. However, my son will have his 2nd birthday in mid-July, and I wondered if he will earn a free seat when this switch happens, does anyone have prior experience with this?

Am I also right that there’s no rush for deciding what to do? And I don’t need to decide on refund, new dates or new destination (within 300 miles) as long as the trip is completed within a year of booking date?

    • Anna says:

People on here have reported being given a free additional seat for a child who’s turned 2 after re-booking, but it may depend which CSA you get.

Looking forward to 9.30, it feels like Christmas Eve for some reason.
I hope HFP doesn’t crash with the huge stampede.

    • Andrew says:

Or that it’s a damp squib! Could be bad news, we are just hoping it’s good news. Dynamic pricing for Avios seats maybe?

    • Ghosty says:

Well my life changes over the last few days will maybe be having a cherry on the top. 2nd jab yesterday and retiring today, with my free time be very BA centred (my wife’s very long list of home projects excluded)

8% back at Costa on my Curve Card

  • Doog1000 says:

Sorry boring bendy question here – is it right you can’t pay off barclaycard with bendy – I am getting “foreign cards not accepted” when I try it
Also seems like paying Beardy app with bendy still problematic for a week now?

    • mark2 says:

Barclaycard only accept real bank cards in payment.
I have paid beardy several times in the last week. Shoddy work but it went through.

  • Rob says:

    Here is the 9.30 announcement.

You all asked for it so we are giving it to you… Hfp will now be a subscription service with annual membership starting at £99 per month.
This major enhancement to your lives will involve you paying more to make my life even better.
    Thanks for playing.

Luckily, we already know that Rob has more money in the bank than he knows what to do with.

    AMBER DESTINATION ADVICE.

Appreciate many may disagree with the concept of going to a Amber destination, but having worked full to time since Feb 2020 with only 8 days of holiday since, I’m keen not to cancel/postpone another holiday plan. I booked the a First Class Rtn trip with MEX during the half price Avios Sale last year and as such, whilst refundable, I would never be able to get those flights again for the at price.

As a single guy who is able to work from home, obviously more than happy to isolate on return and take the relevant PCR tests upon return.

My question is with regard to insurance. I have found a few businesses that do offer insurance when travelling against FDCO advice but by the sounds of it, this will purely cover Emergency Medical Treatment only. In the event you test positive on the return PCR test and need to isolate, the cost associated with that falls with you! Thankfully flights aren’t an issue as Avios tickets are fully flexible but to have to cash out for and extra 10 day unexpected isolation stay could be quite expensive.

This seems the best option so far… http://www.highriskvoyager.com/

Has anyone else come across another insurer able to offer wider coverage? Any advice anyone is able to offer?

      Battleface

      • Neil says:

Awful. They consider having Covid in the last 12 months as a pre-existing condition and so will not cover you. I had covid in Jan! Was fuming with them!

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Pre existing condition for what?

          • Neil says:

Im assuming Long-Covid… but to my knowledge thats a sperate defined condition. Eitherway they gave little clarification.

    • Tracey says:

Staysure keep popping up on adverts.

      • Neil says:

Frustratingly only covers travel against FDCO advice to European destinations it seems….?!

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

So basically nothing as a GHIC will cover majority of that
