We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Thinking of booking a bank holiday getaway within UK. Covid has dragged on for such a long time that I have given up on following all the travel rules. Are we allowed to stay in a hotel now?

And any recommendations for a nice weekend getaway with a good deal on stay. I am London based.
    Thanks.

    • Andrew says:

Yes there are no restrictions on staying in hotels now.

    • Rob says:

Are you mad?! Every decent hotel was booked up weeks ago. It’s also half term remember. You might find a few straggles here and there but don’t bet on it. NI is opening and probably not fully booked – Hilton Belfast has had a refurb apparently.

      • AnotherUser says:

You’ll also find plenty of options in Scotland, subject to budget – can choose from different Hilton chain hotels in Edinburgh, or the Best Western Ten Hill Place, or the Balmoral… Prices are on the high side, though, unless you fancy a HIX 🙂

    • Travel Strong says:

Skip popular coastal destinations, and devon/cornwall entirely, and the UK is your oyster. City break possibilities abound.
Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle, all pleasant enough. Premier Inn’s are sold out more than Hiltons. Trawl tripadvisor ratings to select a 4.5+ rated property for your location and you can’t go far wrong.

I’m in a luxury hotel in the UK with rock bottom prices and they are still 90% empty.

Keep looking — you may find something

I just returned from a week in Devon. While one couldn’t turn up at the last minute for a dinner booking at popular restaurants, it was hardly booked out or crowded. Bristol, where we stopped briefly on the return, had far more people ‘out and about’. East Anglia also doesn’t seem to have many tourists.

        Ooops…the secret is now out.

Have I missed the news about the IHG promotion to get platinum after staying 5 nights? Just saw it in my account and accidentally triggered the 90 days to qualify from now

    • Rob says:

Either targetted or another mistake by IHG …

      • Anuj says:

Well it showed up on my mum’s account but I was able to register using the promo code on the registration link and it shows in my account. It’s 5 nights to get platinum or just 2 nights to get gold.

Funding Coinbase with Shanghai / Creative – anyone tried? Direct / fronted / non fronted?

    • Memesweeper says:

All banks hate crypto. A little funding is OK but forget any significant cashing out without a slew of awkward questions.

One of the few good uses for Che is a buffer between real banks and crypto IMO

    Couple of newbie questions

Trying to extend my Feb 2022 Amex companion voucher via FTV.
    1) if I book economy, does it lock in that class or can I change to club after?
    2) Do I have to wait a few days before requesting an FTV?

    Many Thanks

  • Fabio says:

Random question but can’t seem to find the answer anywhere!
I currently hold a gold amex and thinking of dropping it to the freebie one as I don’t really hit the 15k target that makes it worth its yearly cost at the moment – (it hard to take advantage of all the offers)

I thought instead of dropping down to the free version, I want to add a family member to take advantage of their spending as well which would justify keeping the card – How does spending on additional cards work? Are they itemized separately or are they all jumbled up (to make it easier to settle their payments each month!)? Any thoughts on this strategy/ alternatives would be helpful! (Also one last question – but unlike the platinum card, supplementary holders don’t receive the lounge card do they?)

    • Rob says:

One statement but the supplementary spend is listed separately.

No lounge pass for a supp.

Frankly I’d just apply for the Amex Rewards Credit Card and then cancel Gold.

      • Fabio says:

Why do you suggest moving to the the freebie card? £140 isn’t justifiable for the card past the first year? (Also are the offers similar or stunned vs gold the two cards?)

  • Ant says:

Very OT question: anyone can recommend an Events Company in London? Need to organise a client summer party at a top end property but no idea where to start from
