The HfP chat thread – Monday 24th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

OT – I’ve got a £100 Jimmy Choo gift card which expires in around 6 months. Feel free to get in touch via Rob/Rhys if you’re interested

  • ed says:

should probably already know the answer to these questions. as I understand, if you take an FTV with a 241 wrapped up in it, but redeem for a trip requiring fewer Avios the excess Avios are then refunded in the form of a new FTV. Is there anyway to release those left over Avios? Also, once you opt for the FTV do you relinquish your usual redemption flight right to cancel for £35 pp?

    • Nadeshka says:

I’ve done this before and they refunded the avios and cash direct, no new FTV.
Used this to my advantage by rebooking a long haul zone 7 to a domestic and got almost everything back saving the cancellation fee (I genuinely wanted the domestic flight though).

    • Ghosty says:

Recently moved a reward booking for 5 with (2) 2-4-1’s from August this year to Easter next year (LHR-LAX) they had to turn it into a FTV first and then rebook using the FTV straight after. Because on of the legs were now in and off peak date the refubded the Avios back to my account. (with BA via phone)

Hello all. Anyone else had problems paying HMRC with Curve metal?
Its been working fine until today when I got a message on HMRC website ‘We are unable to process cards of this type’

    • Alan says:

I had that, it was a Curve issue that after a few attempts Curve admitted they couldn’t fix. In the end they had to cancel my card and issue a new one to get it sorted.

  • mark2 says:

Can someone please explain how to pay on e-bay with nectar points?
Has anyone bought the PayPal gift cards using nectar?

    • Secret Squirrel says:

@Mark- you have to redeem your nectar points in your ebay/nectar section for a voucher of money off. 500 points min I think.
      PayPal GC’s – wow I didn’t know they existed – thanks I’ll take a look now

    • Rob says:

Link your accounts via the Nectar page on eBay (linked from home page). You can order eBay evouchers from ‘My eBay’.

  • Tarmohamed says:

Anyone having issues with Curve and NatWest Current Account?

    • 747_Brat says:

I am having issue with Curve online payments. They are not working since Friday.
Card present transactions are working fine!

      • Paul says:

same for me. other people seem fine. wonder if it’s to do with spend? I am very high at over £1.2m per year.

        • 747_Brat says:

I just got in touch with a Curve agent. To my astonishment, my card expiry date and CVV have changed overnight!

I ordered a replacement card recently and while I was waiting for the card to arrive, I was using the card details on the Curve app, and it was working fine until last week. But now it seems like the details on the app were wrong. I just checked my physical card, and used those details and it has now started working again.

This is what Curve had to say:

“We’ve noticed a bug where customers are viewing the incorrect expiry details in the Curve app. We’ve highlighted this issue to the product team who are working to resolve it. Please your physical card details for the online transactions you are attempting. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

          • Paul says:

            Useful thanks.
How did you get in touch? I tried help chat this morning but still waiting.

    • SteveJ says:

Out of interest, why use Curve with your current account (presumably debit card)?

  • Anuj says:

I’ve got the Rimowa offer for 10k avios for spending £500. I’m wondering if they have any products that have good resale value on eBay that I could sell using the £1 offer and pocket the avios

    • Benilyn says:

10k MR worth about £80 (using base case Nectar, obv can get better value) but for examples sake:
Assuming you sell without discounted selling fees, fee ends up being ~10%.
So £500 x 10% = £50. Then delivery, insured (for a £500 product), talking at least £12, so £62 total. Becomes tight… as you need to sell below retail.

      • egold says:

you’d save delivery if you order directly to the buyer. (with risks attached)

      • Anuj says:

I only sell with the discounted fees, which come every few weeks. For insurance I use a third party company which only charges 0.5% and so my fees will be 0.5% + £1 to eBay + delivery

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Correct me if I am wrong but the prices on Ebay look way too low to make it work. Probably driven my the niche market, high price tag and risks of fakes combined with the fact that people that buy RIMOWA mostly aren’t concerned with saving 10%

    • Andrew says:

Not worth the hassle – you’ll unlikely cover your costs.

    • egold says:

regarding the above, is there anything cheaper than the £580 carry on case?

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

They have phone carry cases but that is it

        • meta says:

You can buy luggage stickers for £80+, but some are cheaper for £6😂

      • kitten says:

Germany cheaper for Rimowa (koffer.de, for example) but Brexit has made VAT messier, not necessarily more, opening the door to delivery companies adding.some chunky surcharges for things sent to UK from EU now

  • HBommie says:

    Algarve COVID pack from Randox.

x3 PCR’s included, tests via dropbox for £300, £180 with discount code RYANALGARVE .

    Seems reasonable for PCRs.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Why do you need 3 PCR?

      • HBommie says:

You don’t but I thought the whole package wasn’t badly priced.

      • HBommie says:

PCR accuracy? Is it false positive or negatives more likely with lateral flow?

        • TGLoyalty says:

So the 3rd is taken in Portugal and processed locally?

          • HBommie says:

Yes, there are many dropbox locations in the Algarve. Mostly medical facilities/pharmacy’s as far as I can see.

          • HBommie says:

Not the third, second prior to return

          • TGLoyalty says:

Yes sorry just meant two are legally required. 1 by Portugal 1 by U.K. on day 2.

Pre departure to U.K. can be Lateral flow and you are far more likely to have a false negative than a false positive.

          • HBommie says:

That’s good to know re false negative.

  • bill says:

Does anyone know if the Plaza Premium LHR T2 will be open by 25 June ? Does it depend on social distancing ending or does it depend on passenger numberrs ?

    • bill says:

I should add – this is relating to the arrivals in T2

      • Sukes says:

I doubt arrivals lounges will open anytime soon, the priority will be to get some departure lounges up & running first.

    • Sukes says:

It’ll be a commercial decision. The Aspire lounge at T5 is reopening tomorrow according to Priority Pass.
