We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

MAN T1 lounges appear to be reopening on 01 June. At least Aspire hope so, and the airport’s own Escape is following suit.

    • mvcvz says:

Both are so mediocre it would be better for them to remain closed.

I’m planning to book a return flight to the US on AA (or maybe BA) in a month or so (I have a US passport and a good reason to go). Having not booked any travel since covid started, I’m a bit rusty.

Firstly, I’m wondering if there is any advantage in terms of flexibility/cancellation (particularly after flying the outbound leg, if either country’s quarantine etc policy changes) between booking with Avios or booking with cash via either AA or BA directly? Also, with Avios should I book as two separate one ways?

Secondly, is there much advantage to sorting out travel insurance at this point? I’m inclined to wait until close to the time in case I can avoid having to organise specialist insurance.

    • Andrew says:

Don’t book 2 one ways with BA on Avios as you’ll pay substantially more taxes/charges than booking a return

    • WaynedP says:

Re travel insurance, I’ve always been led to believe you must be covered from day of booking for any cancellation claims, which I achieve with continuous cover from bank & credit card packaged benefits.

Different for medical cost claims on holiday, I believe but have never tested the principle.

But for cancellation/travel plan changes it seems obvious to me that you would be declined if you suddenly took out cover only to claim for a travel change or cancellation for a ticket booked months previously.

      • Steve says:

Thanks – good point although I’m not too worried about cancellation in advance of the trip if it’s an Avios booking (although I wonder if it’s the case that the same issue would apply at the other end of trip, I’ll have to investigate).

  • Andrew says:

  • Manya says:

Our flights booked to Mexico City for this 29th have been cancelled and we have been rebooked on a flight departing on 30th May. The flights were booked in October last year during the 50% off AVIOS sale and a 2-4-1.

I have been advised that I can amend booking to another date flight which falls within 12 months of booking, i.e. 6th October 2021, if I do not want to incur any additional costs. Given uncertainty over travel restrictions I would prefer to travel in 2022. If I select a date past Oct 21 then that would require me to take a FTV and make a new booking based on Avios availability as well as having to pay at least the 50% difference in AVIOS costs.

Is this correct and if so any workaround?

    • BJ says:

It seems that there is an element of luck involved regardless of whether you try to change it online or via the call centre. Some of us can do 365+ days in advance and some cannot. I was one of the lucky ones when I tried online. I recommend you exhaust online trials before calling them. I used android mobile device on desktop mode, others have reported success via the app where it was not possible via the website. Just to add, I could also change to any date regardless of avios availability.

      • Jody says:

Today is my day that I was hoping to be able to do this, as my inbound flight for the dates we want are available. Double checked there was avios availability (I’m aware it shouldn’t matter), all good. However, neither website or app will let me change (both come up with sorry, this combination of flights is not available).

I will phone, but I’m really not expecting a good result from what I’ve read on here. Question is, what is the likelihood of me winning if I take it further?

        • meta says:

High chance. Book fully flexible ticket and take them to MCOL. They’ll fold in 1-2 months. Don’t go to CEDR as they seem to be taking far too long (4+ months according to reports here). Another option is to try S75.

I’d also wait a day or two before trying again online or even this afternoon. If the dates just opened up for Avios, it might take a bit of time for it to be properly reflected in the whole system.

          • Jody says:

Thanks meta. Have just had a play about on the website, and it won’t let me change to any date, even if it’s a date within 12 months of ticketing. I made sure that avios seats were available in business (even though I know that shouldn’t make a difference), so definitely some kind of issue.

I guess I’ll wait a couple of days just to give the system chance to sort itself out (though I doubt it will!) then phone and see what happens.

I have copied loads of stuff from threads a few weeks ago so will refresh myself on that before phoning. Just a question though, is one phone call enough if they say no? Do I then have to email in to customer services and ask as well before going to MCOL?

The S75 bit is tricky, I can’t even remember which card I paid on now, but it is an old Amex card that has long been cancelled. The tickets were originally for a West Coast driving holiday and cruise last year which were all obviously cancelled. We then changed them (using the FTV system) for a Panama Canal cruise which was supposed to go this January, also cancelled soon after we booked. Then got a FTV and changed to Australia, of course a no go! Then the 50% off avios was announced so got another FTV and took advantage of that deal along with the companion voucher to book for Seattle this June for an Alaskan cruise we booked (also cancelled!!).

So now we’ve rebooked our Alaska cruise for next May, and obviously want to move the flights we had booked for June (which have so far been cancelled and moved to other flights twice by BA).

        • Lady London says:

@Jody give it a few days then try again. To get your MCOL claim in find a decent travel agent who can hold a seat for you in the system and submi proof of the cost of that with your claim.

The key is you book a seat of a type that does not have to be ticketed (ie paid for) till very near the flight. You will have to pay a booking fee eg £20-£60 which the agent will keep but you add this to the claim as another cost of your having to do your own rebooking. Be aware these tickets will cost more as typically there are ticket types that can be issued(ticketed) as late as, say, 7days-last minutw before you fly. This lets you make your claim without going too far out of pocket. Too bad for the airline if that’s a (potentially massively) more expensive ticket they should have given you your rights without putting you through it. From the point you submit your MCOL obvs they are liable for your mcol filing fee, agent booking fee ad well as replacement ticket cost so put it all in the claim.

          • Jody says:

Thank you. Any suggestions of agents I should look at for doing this (just trying to be prepared)? Never bought anything like that before, so not got a clue!

          • Lady London says:

I would have thought Trailinders. You want a knowledgeable agent who does their own ticketing and been around for 10-20years min i would think. Not sure if Travel Republic would also fit that bill. Does Harrods still host one of the big travel agents in the basement?

      • Lady London says:

Give it a week after the cancellation is notified then try in MMB for your date. Anecdotally 3 full days may be enough.

For me it’s perfectly reasonable that you could only do this trip at certain times when you’d have fresh leave of enough days from work, perhaps you are restricted to school hols etc, so you might not be able to rebook till 2022.

The 1 year from ticketing is an IATA restriction but @Charlieface advised that if the airline cancelled you then does not apply. The airline is supposed to endorse the ticket INVOL and that lets it be rerouted on dates beyond. Practically speaking it’s perfectly easy for an airline to issue a new ticket if they want to.

Give it a go online first after giving it about a week. If that does not work you’ll have to call them.

        • Jody says:

Thanks Lady London. Have added yours and meta’s advice to my crib sheet!

          • BJ says:

Indian call centre remains closed I think. Not sure if that is good news or bad news in this respect should you try calling. Reports here indicate good results with escalation so ultimately as think most of those that are prepared to invest the effort get a resuly. Whether the effort is worth it is dependent on what’s at stake. Longhaul premium cabin difficult route 241 I’d definitely make the effort.

        • Lady London says:

Corporate travel agents book these a lot. Such as was Hogg Robinson (HRG) owned by Amex now.

      • Manya says:

Thanks – I do get the option to select new dates in MMB on both desktop and app but whatever dates I choose it comes back with no availability for selected date and to change my date. I’m not sure if this is entirely accurate given that my return is from LAX and I suspect that they will be scheduled for daily flights in April 2022 – seats are certainly showing up as available if I look at it as a new Avios booking.

Keep trying or does this mean I am not one of the lucky ones?

        • Lady London says:

give it a week to let the system settle and try again. After all your booking’s not next week is it.

          • Manya says:

Yes, my original flight was this 29th May which has been re-booked to 30th May. For peace of mind I would rather make a call on it either way by this Thursday.

I’ll keep trying until then but just wanted to know if perhaps the above was a common fault and some sort of workaround.

      • Tariq says:

Similar situation, have tried online and app but no success (could be because I have a duplicated sector in the booking due to an earlier cancellation, or that they haven’t taken payment for the taxes/charges). Have spoken to call centre twice and no beans. Posting letter before action today.

        • Jody says:

Tariq did you use a template letter (if so, where from please?) or draft one yourself?

I have no idea where to find a flexible ticket that you only pay for nearer the time (I did google but wasn’t very successful). I did price a fully flexible ticket up on BA for club return to Seattle – only £26000!!!! Unfortunately this one would have to paid upfront, so no way that will be happening!

          • Tariq says:

No, wrote it myself, just explained the scenario, detailed the calls I’d already made, quoted the relevant clause of EC261 and stated what flights and dates I wanted. Will see if they contact me; not convinced that it’ll get me what I want but gets the claim in if I decide to take it further. Will book fully refundable F seats if I do decide to MCOL; will trigger my partner’s sign up bonus on the Platinum card I referred her for so two birds, one stone.

  • Green Plastic says:

Barclays Premier question – my salary is well under 75k, however with the stock awards I have as part of my contract my P60 shows well over 75k. I do not get 75k paid into my account each year, but because of the way my stock is awarded and reflected on my payslips, it counts towards my gross income. Do I still qualify?

    • BJ says:

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Apply with the details from payslip or P60 as best and just provide that if/when asked. I had been a long time customer and still got asked for a review while others including new applicants reported very simple experiences. Just be aware that there have been some reports of Barclays freezing or closing accounts where they suspected customers to be a bit creative.

    • Rob says:

I think its one of those where you apply, state an income figure inc the options, and if asked for further proof submit what you can.

      • Green Plastic says:

Thanks Rob & BJ, I will give it a go in that case and will report back if any issues.

Another question whilst I’m at it, are there any ways of generating points these days from paying HMRC bills? If I understand it correctly the old method of using Curve is now dead?

        Thanks again

        GP

        • Jonathan says:

You can get points using curve metal or ‘fronted’ transactions. Curve metal costs £14.99 per month/£150 per year, fronted transactions cost 1.5%

        • FatherOfFour says:

Similar question regarding a bonus that gets paid into a pension, rather than payslip. Would this count as “income”?

          • Blenz101 says:

I don’t think so. Broadly speaking Barclays are going to be looking for you to have a salary transfer of £4000+ per month, qualifying on the salary requirement states you have to have it paid into your account.

A discretionary (or even contractual) bonus which is not paid into your current account will not be visible to them, if this mean you are paying below £75k gross into the account you don’t meet the requirements.

If you try and game the system by shifting cash around then reports on this site seem to suggest they will close your account altogether.

          • Rob says:

I would apply stating your total salary and see what they say if asked. You meet the requirements, technically.

    • Patrick Cold says:

My experience is that you will have no problems applying in this way.

  • BJ says:

Amex offer 10,000 MR or avios for spending £500 at Rimowa. Think I’ll use this for gifts for Xmas this year if I can find a good multiple promo stack. Also £50 back on £300 spend at Google.

    • Tim says:

Did you get it on main + supplementaries? Sadly I only got it on main. Just about to buy a Rimowa for my OH so lucky timing!

      • BJ says:

On my parents BA, green and gold cards. Not on any of my support and not on my PC card.

    • Andrew says:

The only stack you’ll get with Rimowa is via BA store or similar – you’ll never get a promo code and they don’t do sales. They do sell day bags as well as luggage now starting at around the £500 mark – so a decent offer. On my BAPP too for 10k Avios.

      • BJ says:

Thanks Andrew, save me some time. Ot is always disappointing when searching for codes and finding none (that work).

        • Andrew says:

The kick back of Avios from BA store is decent at 5/£1 and tracks well in my experience. So that’s a total of 12,500 Avios for a £500 spend.

          • BJ says:

4/£ at Virgin I see but that might better suit me with the MR as I’ve started keeping Virgin points for first time instead of changing to Hilton in the hope of using them on ANA.

        • xcalx says:

Back in late 2007 I was looking for a promo code for an American Airlines flight and stumbled into this world of airline miles. The best search ever and no I didn’t find a code.

    • Vit says:

That’s some cracking offer! Bought hartmann collection earlier this year and still have not been used. 🙄

      • Andrew says:

And Rimowa somewhat more expensive than Hartmann.

      • KBuffett says:

The offer is good if you’re in the market for a Rimowa. However, the cases are style (and perhaps even substance) over practicality. No external pockets to whip your iPad and out etc. Heavy and gets scratched so easily.

        • BJ says:

Got tired of samsonite though. They don’t make them like they used to. One of my biggest travel regrets was getting rid of a samsonite cabin bag I used for over twenty years. The new one I replaced it with didn’t last much over a year. Replacement wasn’t much better. After that I changed to an antler that cost about £90 IIRC. I have no affection for it but it is proving robust and I think I’m probably harder on bags than most.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Maybe try Away. No issues for me

I’ll probably look to replace my cabin bag with a rimowa this year.

          • Andrew says:

Looking at getting some new luggage, it’s almost impossible to buy any with just two wheels now though.

I don’t get the 4 wheel thing, they seem (and from experience are) far less robust than the traditional two wheel semi-integrated style. They also seem to be a considerable waste of space. For my last US hand-luggage only trip, I needed a 56x35x23 case for Delta, the only one I could find had four wheels. Having four wheels instead of two meant losing the equivalent of about 4 days worth of socks, underwear and tshirts.

          • BJ says:

Thanks @TG, I’ll have a look. It is tbe wheels that I busted on my samsonites, I tend to pack bag heavy and just run it over everything including kerbs and stairs. @Andrew, I also preferred two wheels but I am now thinking I’ll try four. Getting too old, four are easy once in the miles of flat smooth floors of airport terminals, they just glide along beside you, no effort required.

          • TGLoyalty says:

@BJ no issues with wheels at all and a very light bag if you’re checking in / get weighed. It’s priced middle range

          • JDB says:

In many years of trying all sorts of different cases, cheap and expensive, price is definitely no indicator of solidity/reliability/good wear. The clear winner is Kipling!

          • Vit says:

@BJ, have you looked at Tumi? With current shop promotion at Bicester and amex £50 off. You’re looking at less than £700 for 2 x 19 degree, one check-in and 1 cabin. They seem to be the direct competitor with rimowa as well.

          • BJ says:

@Viit others, can we shop online at Bicester Village? Sorry if that is a stupid question, maybe I am misunderstanding what it is.

        • meta says:

Agreed. In any case you can buy 10k MR points for £150 if you need MR points.

        • Tim says:

I have an Essential Sleeve and have zero experience of it being:

          A) impractical- it holds a large amount of weight very well and the compressing separators make it easy to pack
          B) scratching easily- I fly twice a week with it in the hold or cabin, I have only found surface scratches near where my wheels are from lazily dragging it up pavements)
          C) being heavy- the weight distribution and strength of handle is unparalleled, and ive had a fair few different Samsonites and equivalents.

The Rimowa customer service and warranty is definitely untouched too. Broken wheel or handle? Go to store, get it fixed or a replacement case. Simple

      • BJ says:

Any thoughts on possibility of Thailand late this year? A few comments last night. Personally I’m not seeing it, Thai public seems quite happy to trash their tourism industry for their peace of mind, and the current increasing cases won’t help. I get feeling their government very sensitive to public sentiment on covid.

        • Polly says:

We are now putting Thailand off til Feb 22, in the hopes they get their act sorted. It is baffling how they are allowing their tourism to be so decimated. Bali at least are trying, with local areas being completely vaccinated. Staff must live in their hotels etc out in Nusa Dua.
Yes, like you, watching closely. Currently changing their minds not weekly, but 3 times in a week. We’re you going for Xmas BJ?

          • BJ says:

Still booked in for Xmas and NY Polly but put the spring trip in place as back up. Hoping for Xmas but think spring more likely. I hope my comment last night didn’t spook you into changing your November trip. Anything is still possible. They are getting people in Thailand vaccinated which might help. But they are all over the place with it due to short supply, fake news induced fears, and politics by the opposition. They are going to produce AZ in Thailand and a vaccine of their own too I believe so despite current mess things looking more promising going forward.

        • Sam G says:

Phuket is still pushing hard for July. Even allowing for some slippage I expect it to be up and running by then. After a week – 10 days there should be ok to travel on elsewhere.

I’d pick a flight carefully as it may only be for direct international arrivals (not via Bangkok) & the ME hubs are a risky bet currently. Something like Singapore Airlines or Swiss/Edelweiss. Thai are running weekly direct flights as well during summer from Heathrow, may extend.

Bali I’ve seen reports they are only going to target local travellers in a bubble arrangement to start with e.g. China. I suspect to get them on side they’d have to restrict entry from elsewhere

        • blenz101 says:

Isn’t Phuket opening in July to vaccinated travellers which the Thai government has reconfirmed very recently.

The average member of the Thai public will rightly be in no great rush to see hoards ravaging the coastal areas of the country in a completely unregulated way. If anything Covid has given the country and its environment some breathing space.

There was and there already huge internal debate in the country about trying to attract fewer but higher-spending tourists, less Chinese and Russian group tours. Less ping pong show. Less buckets of cocktails, full moon parties and diesel spewing longtail boat trips.

I think Phuket will go ahead as a sandbox isolated experiment where the people on the island need the tourists to survive. The rest of the country will not want to be trashed by foreign tourists so will be in no rush to reopen and when they do visas and the numbers they allow in may be very different from what we have become acustomed.

          • Sam G says:

Yes, Phuket is pushing for July, island access is tightly controlled internally, mass vaccine roll out is underway etc.

Agree with your comments re: mass tourism, I truly hope this marks a change for tourism across the whole SE Asia region. I’ve been frequently saddened by stories from guides and locals about how these tour groups fly in and mainly spend into companies owned by foreigners (hotels, shops etc) – so there is actually quite a small benefit to these communities.

Thailand wasn’t ever quite so bad due to their foreign investment policies being more controlled but tourism there was out of control at times / points. I remember taking a morning flight out of Phuket and it was like watching an armada heading to invade Phi Phi islands down below! They had already recognised this as you say and change was already afoot.

I’m very fond of Thailand and plan to visit later this year or early next, but will stick to Phuket region which wants and needs us back

          • BJ says:

Agree Phukrt will be special case and open earlier but Phuket alone doesn’t work for me. AY also do direct flights to Phuket but I imagine they are currently suspended. I think they have missed the boat on high end versus mass tourism. Before Covid both Bangkok and Phuket had direct flights to over 20 Chinese cities I believe. I don’t think they are going to refuse them if/when they want to come back. Bowdler, I have heard many complaints that the benefits to the Thai tourism industry from the Chinese tour operators is nowhere near as good as we might imagine so perhaps there is scope for change. The industry is however very dependent on smaller and family businesses. I think they would be hit hard by an attempt to refocus the market.

          • Wollhouse says:

I’m actually in Koh Samui now. I came for business and quarantined in Bangkok. The airport experience was surreal = like landing mid set of the film Contagion but HIGHLY efficient and no way was anyone getting into the country unless all pre-authorisation paperwork and quarantine hotel was booked. The locals are VERY happy to see us. Lack of tourists has decimated the economic climate on the island and everyone we have spoken to just desperately wants people to come back. Pretty much everything is gone in Chaweng – v little in Fishermans or Lamai. Restaurant choices are very limited. We haven’t spoken to anyone yet that isn’t saying that they hope restrictions will be lifted soon. It’s a very odd experience

          • blenz101 says:

@BJ, Tourism makes up a relatively small part of the Thai economy and the ‘mass tourism’ tends to be focused on the islands we are already discussing. The rest of the Thai economy and view of its people outside of these areas is that they don’t want to see the situation return to what it had become.

I honestly think they will reduce the numbers in a similar way to the Philippines has previously. I can also see a situation where visas from some countries are applied for in advance and the source of funds / wealth of the traveller is part of the application process. This will sharply reduce the number of visitors overcrowding small guest houses who bring their own rice cooker and contribute nothing to the local economy whilst devastating the natural environment.

I am not saying it is right that $’s determies who can visit but Thailand is a developing country and needs to have some controls in order to preserve what is has to offer tourists.

          • BJ says:

@Blenz, always felt myself that they would benefit from refocusing the tourist market but it seems too far gone. Perhaps they could try it on a province by province basis. In sone tourism more critical than others. Personally I have a preference for visiting those with few tourists, or those favoured mostly by locals.

    • lumma says:

If I was going to spend £900 on a cabin bag, I’d expect it to come with someone to carry it for me

      • BJ says:

My samsonite that lasted over 20y and was still on hood shape when I have it away was very expensive at the time. Over 20y it was great value though. If I think I can get a new bag that will last me rest of my days I’m happy to pay for it.

        • Rob says:

Have you hit that stage now?!

The “if I buy this it will see me out” stage, where you look at buying items on the basis that it will last until you die? 🙂

          • xcalx says:

Ha ha I am, only last week when I finished fitting new gutters and fascia boards I stood back and said they will see me out. I remember years ago fitting a washing machine for a 99 year old lady ( 100th Birthday later that week) and noticed on the paperwork she had taken out an extended 5 year warranty.

          • BJ says:

Yes, since 2014 😀 My partner is very frustrated because we are letting a very nice house and living in a flat. I like living in centre and just being able to walk out, and always maintained house is for when we got old . Only I put my foot in it a few weeks ago by letting slip I would probably die in this flat.

Yes, I posted about it late last night. It has appeared on Plat CB of Mrs. Brat but haven’t seen it on any of our other cards!

        • Harry T says:

Thanks, haven’t seen that anywhere on our numerous cards.

          • Andrew says:

Not seen it on any of my myriad cards either.

          • BJ says:

Probably doesn’t appear on accounts that have been used recently at amazon. For same reason I never use amex at Morrisons unless I have an offer.

          • Lee says:

I think it’s only for Plat ca$hb@ck card

    • Harry T says:

I don’t think I’ve ever used some of these cards at Amazon. I recently received the Hilton offer on a Gold card I had spent thousands at Hilton on, whilst not receiving it on a card I’d never used at Hilton. I don’t think the algorithms are as simple as we sometimes hope.

      • BJ says:

Almost all cards get Hilton though. I think more likely to get offers with smaller limits if we are new to the merchant.

      • Aston100 says:

Yeah Harry, I don’t think the logic is simple.
We make several purchases every month at Amazon and have received the offer (Spend £20, get £5 statement credit) on our PCB cards.

    • BJ says:

Yes, provided you do so within a certain time frame after the flight. I cannot recall how long you have but I think it is of the oder of 3 or 6 months line most airlines.
