The HfP chat thread – Sunday 23rd May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I had the email from AMEX about the Hilton promo but the offer was not available on my card.

A quick chat call on my mobile followed by a fast uploaded screenshot of the email later and it appeared already saved onto the card 24hrs later.

    • Aston100 says:

Roberto, I have had the offer applied to almost ever card and supplementary via phone calls. I did not receive emails about the Hilton promo.
Granted I had to chase up a few of the cards on a 2nd call.

      • Harry T says:

Aston do they not tell you that you aren’t targeted for the offer?

        • John Gallagher says:

I was told it couldn’t be added if I hadn’t been targeted-(

        • Aston100 says:

Harry, I had pushback from the live chat agents (to be expected, as those people are just copy&paste monkeys and have no ability to think outside the box).
However, on the two phone calls I made (Brighton both times) there was no resistance or pushback at all.
I now have the Hilton offer on almost every card that we have between us.

          • Aston100 says:

Which by the way is very useful as I’m planning on using 5 of these cards & offers on my next 2 stays.

          • Harry T says:

            @Aston
Thanks, I’ll give that a go if the inevitable Marriott Bonvoy offer doesn’t appear on all my cards. I don’t really have any Hilton stays planned.

        • BJ says:

Normally they do but if you have received an email and/or they can see offer on your account on their systems they will add it for you.

  • xcalx says:

Good luck to everyone who got tickets for todays final prem games. Pub now for a few pints then game, happy days. MOT

    • BJ says:

Except for foxes I guess, but they could drown their sorrows.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Sainsbury’s nectar credit card – If I want to take advantage of the balance transfer AND the signup up bonus, is it correct to first spend £400 at Sainsbury’s to trigger sign up bonus, pay it off in full and then initiate BT?

    • Connor says:

Shouldn’t make a difference. Transactions with the highest interest get paid off first IIRC, in this case your purchase at Sainsburys.

    • Memesweeper says:

Yes. Personally I spent, waited for the statement, cleared it, then clocked up the 0%.

    • BJ says:

That’s the way I would do it. Always safest. Before proceeding double check that you got the 17 months and not a shorter period. Isn’t there a BT fee on this card though?

  • Sandra says:

Following the conversation yesterday has anyone managed to activate a supp. Amex card yet? I tried again today with OH’s but was still not recognising and locking me out. I had an online chat and they have activated the card but I still can’t create an account for it. Back to Amex chat who have now told me ‘there appears to be some online maintenance going on’ try later….

    • Peter K says:

Added a plat supplementary yesterday to an existing online account.

      • Sandra says:

Thanks Peter K – They have told me that a supp. card holder has to have a separate account for each card and that it couldn’t be added to the same account as the BA supp. card. Is that wrong?

        • Aston100 says:

Sandra, I responded to this yesterday, and also to the same question (was it someone else?) a few days prior.
The lack of proper forums and notifications etc is frustrating.

This has happened to me a couple of times this year.
Amex live chat always tell me I need to create a new account for supplementary cards (this is nonsense).
However, I found that on both occasions, a few days (2 or 3?) after activating, the supp cards ended up displaying on the correct main accounts.

          • Sandra says:

Hi Aston, yes I saw your post yesterday and I did comment that I’d had issues. Just wondered if people were still having issues today. I am going to leave now and hope it corrects itself eventually. Just my OH wanted to use it today in the hope that spend will trigger the offers quicker!

        • BJ says:

Yes, that’s just more nonsense from amex CSA. All my cards dating back as far as I can remember have been on a single account.

    • George K says:

Try calling. I had similar issue, plus card not showing in Primary cards view. Agent did the process over the phone (with points posting immediately)

      • Sandra says:

Yes I think will have to George K. Am going to leave for now and try once more later today/tomorrow and then call if necessary.

        • Sandra says:

The actual points for the supp. card posted on my account within about 4 hours of applying for it last Thursday, so the points aren’t a problem just the card which arrived yesterday!

  • Pete M says:

Can confirm that the Crick Institute in London will happily give second doses of Covid jabs if it’s been 8 weeks since your first one, even without an appointment.

    • Paul Pogba says:

Does this apply to Pfizer or AZ? I had my first on Friday at a local hospital, asked about bringing my 12 week second dose forward and was told it only applied to AZ (but they didn’t seem that confident).

      • Pete M says:

Sorry, should have added that – AZ. There’s plenty of stock of that for some reason apparently lol 😅

      • Tracey says:

I would give it a couple of weeks before trying to rebook. At the moment there is an abundance of AZ around, the stuff planned for second doses and those that were lined up for first doses that now won’t be given. Couple that with some mass vac centres turning over to do Pfizer and the effort is currently being made to pull second dose AZ from around 11 weeks to 8+ weeks.
Let the dust settle for a few weeks and you will see many more centres giving Pfizer, at which point it may be possible to start booking in Pfizer seconds earlier than the current 11 weeks.

    • Andrew says:

But the efficacy is higher if it’s 12 weeks so I’ll be waiting.

      • Pete M says:

Not quite for the Indian variant it would appear?

        • Jonathan says:

The efficacy data for AZ & Pfizer on “Indian” variant is comparing Apples & Pears so I wouldn’t read it that way.

The good news is that they both seem good enough (we won’t know exactly how good for a while yet). Hospitalisation rates don’t seem to be increasing yet either although it’s very early days due to lag between infection & deterioration.

  • Josh says:

Anything I should be conscious of when using the IHG creation card with bendy ?

    • Aston100 says:

      Who are you paying? Ernie?

    • SteveJ says:

Not much, Bendy plays very nicely with Solihull IME

      • Si says:

One thing that caught me out is IHG took a few days to load a number bendy ernie payments. Meant I was able to go beyond the max limit on my card and I recieved a penalty (£15 or something) once IHG had processed everything.

£15 was a bargain for the points I was earning though so I didn’t question it at all and just paid straight up.

        • Crafty says:

You don’t want an overlimit fee potentially being reported to your credit files.

  • N says:

Can I book on points on a DOH-DXB flight in F for access to Al-Safwa (assuming it’s open at the time of travel)?

If so, how? BA site only letting me book into J. No QR points, but got lots of Amex.

    • H says:

QR only sell Y and J on this route, regional F is no longer offered. You can book J and pay for access to Al Safwa.

      • N says:

Thanks for the heads up! Was about to go on a wild goose chase for the regional F ticket

      • Andrew says:

Regional F is still offered, just not to DXB.

    • Andrew says:

Yes unfortunately the days of QR marketing F on that route are over. You could book Muscat instead in F and get access to Al Safwa.

  • Stanley says:

Is there any law on how long it can take an airline to process a refund?? Air Malta fully refundable ticket has now been 3 weeks since I cancelled it and no sign of the refund? Paid on my Amex, not sure what I can do but wait though.

    • Ant says:

I had a few Airmalta flights as I go often. They are the worse. The best thing is to do a cash back on your card where you can otherwise you end up with a v v long wait or a voucher – even if you don’t ask for one.

      • Stanley says:

Thanks for the feedback Ant, they just told me 28 working days! I think I will speak to Amex and start a chargeback. Then Amex can be out of pocket until/if it comes through.

        • Harry T says:

You can initiate a chargeback online without calling Amex. It’s easy.

          • Stanley says:

Thanks. I will do that, but there is a 18Euro a ticket admin fee which I won’t get. So the refund won’t be for the amount I was charged. Can I still do it online in that situation ?
