The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 19th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I don’t have Amex Platinum. I’m due to be renting a hire car in Greece – does anyone have any recommendations for car hire excess insurance? Thank you in advance.

    • Rob says:

insurance4carhire.com is probably the best established

    • Red Flyer says:

Icarhireinsurance.com is one I have used with no issues across Europe in the past.

    • Lady London says:

Questor if anyone needs a greater variety of vehicles, they are excellent to deal with.

Bettersafe have very, very nice professional who called me back when I had a technical question.

Multiple experiences of dealing with both these.

  • Sam G says:

QQ re: MRs. If I have the biz plat and then open a personal MR card, will I have two separate MR accounts?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Should do, if not get them to merge it manually. You should still qualify for the welcome bonus, currently there are targeted higher referal offers. Email Rob for a referal link

    • Sam G says:

I’m just finishing the biz plat spend and about to start my nectar -> plat -> BA shuffle after 2 years and was wondering if I’d be able to then tag a gold card on the end (no bonus) and keep all the points in MRs (as it’s unlikely at the moment I’d see enough value in keeping the plats). Sounds possible then – thanks

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Perfectly possible and a good strategy. I think genghis came up with a better one last week or week before but can’t remeber it

  • George K says:

Sorry if I’m being blind, but have Qured removed the £39/£33 Return to England pack?

    • Jimmy says:

I can still see it on their website, but Project Screen has one that’s even cheaper at £26 using Virgin Atlantic’s deal. Nothing in T&Cs about having to fly on Virgin to use it.

      • Yorkieflyer says:

Nothing about how it is certified on the VS site and it doesn’t appear on the Project Screen site?

        • Jimmy says:

If you google “Virgin Project Screen” you’ll find a specific Virgin Atlantic branded page on Project Screen’s website. I’ll need to use mine very soon so will comment on how it went when I get back.

      • George K says:

Yup – see it now. And thanks for the tip on Project Screen. Might go for that one!

      • Rich says:

I bought a kit from Project Screen last week – returning LFT and Day 2 PCR for £99.

Absolutely zero information on the website, or in the package, or by email. First clue I had about delivery date was an email from Royal Mail (arrives by Special Delivery and won’t fit through a letterbox). There’s an option to ‘activate test’ online, which I’m loathe to do in case I’m supposed to wait till I’m about to take the LFT and it starts some clock ticking!

Not impressed with them so far. I wish I’d waited.

  • JustLetMeFlyAgain says:

Jetblue from LHR now bookable, ain’t cheap though – around 2000 GBP each way on a r/t for mint. Value even worse for Y

  • Will says:

Warning – if you get NHS text inviting you to bring forward your vaccination, you will find that you have to cancel the booking first and reapply. There is no certainty the rebooking is any earlier. In my case an appointment 5 days later was the only one offered. Another fine mess of a Boris website. This was confirmed on a call to 119 – even the agent said it was another Covid cock up

    • AJA says:

Thanks for the heads up. I got the text invitation this morning but had already booked my 2nd dose appointment for 8 June when I booked the first so was considering what to do. Won’t bother changing it.

      • Yorkie Aid says:

Worked great for me. I was booked for 29th May and now going tomorrow. I’m sure they’d love a few “Boris messes” in the rest of Europe if it meant they were going to be vaccinated.

    • Steve says:

Have you tried another centre? Agreed there is no guarantee but pretty much everyone is reporting that if you’re flexible with your centre you can get the second dose sooner (if eligible age range of course).

Boris bashing for the sake of it, given how successful the roll out has been, is a bit pathetic TBH. You’re in the minority where the revised date is later.

      • Sam G says:

I just booked for my OH and there is quite a variation in the first available date at each centre, definitely worth clicking around. I got him in tomorrow morning at one just slightly further away

    • Tracey says:

That is strange. There is an abundance of AZ around at the moment. Mass vaccination centres in England have been told to accept walk ins without appointments from anyone 40+ seeking their first vaccine and anyone seeking a second vaccine provided they are 8 weeks since their first.

      • Louise K says:

I got my first by going along with my slightly older hubby and today tried the same approach, I had an appt but they wouldn’t give hubby his. He’s booked in on Friday instead. They were very strict. This is in the north west.

    • Magic Mike says:

Because of course it is Boris coding the website, not some numpty in the NHS!

  • Matty says:

How long does the Randox Covid test take to arrive? I ordered a kit at 12 noon on Monday. Nothing has arrived yet. The package seems to be sat at Crumlin, waiting for collection by TNT. I’m flying Sunday, so really need to get the test done and returned tomorrow. Randox website has a 10 minute queue just to read their FAQs. Should I sit tight or look at alternatives?

    • APPL says:

Not sure how long tests take to arrive, as only booked day 2 and 8, and they were delivered on my first day in the UK. With results, both times i dropped the tests in the Randox dropbox in London around 2-3pm (it was open until 4pm), and had results in early afternoon the next day.

      • Matty says:

Website says next day delivery, if ordered before 2:00pm but to allow 2 days. It’s still in Crumlin, so it’s not going to arrive today. I’ve to post it back because I don’t live near a drop box nor a DX location.

    • Ed says:

I ordered mine Monday evening and it arrived midday today.

  • Roger C says:

Looking to make the £5K Business Gold spend. Is there any problem with buying Tesco Giftcards in large denominations to use on petrol over the coming months?

    • 747_Brat says:

If you buy £5k worth of gift card at once in-store, you could land in some trouble. Better to buy in smaller denominations from different stores, or if you don’t have many stores around you, you could buy on different days in that same store.

    • Andrew says:

Not sure they accept gift cards at petrol stations do they?

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Didn’t think so. Only M’s.

      • Reney says:

I paid for my petrol using a gift card on Sunday no problems. The website says it is accepted.

      • Ghosty says:

Tesco’s petrol stations take Tesco branded gift cards. It’s the only way I pay.

  • Yorkieflyer says:

AFP reporting that EU ambassadors meeting Corepper 11 has signed off op proposal to re open borders to fully vaccinated travellers
