We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

PAW have 5% off Argos gift cards, can be purchased with points earning card of choice….?

  • Harry T says:

I tried topping up the NHS Discounts Visa with Curve and the payment failed. Is it working for you?

    • Phil W says:

It used to work but it doesn’t now 😔 looks like I’ll be taking Pogba’s advice!

  • Dani says:

If you have MBNA…10percent at Sainsbury’s..buy argos gift cards..

    • Paul Pogba says:

Do Sainsbury award nectar points on gift card purchases? The house needs some bits and after wallpaper-gate I feel I’m not betraying my working class white trash background by ordering from John Lewis.

  • TicknBash says:

Hoping the number crunchers at Avios are on furlough.

Airlines Are Under Heavy Pressure To Devalue Your Mileage Points
Five of America’s largest airlines collectively owe frequent fliers $27.5 billion worth of free air travel. Odd are they’re not going to be able to cash it all in.

    • Rob says:

It’s always fascinating to see how few views these Forbes articles get, as they disclose the number at the top of the page. This one has had 330 so far – our biggest article in the last week has done 16,100.

Lucky we can all get at least 0.8p per Avios point when traded in for nectar points, I don’t think the Americans have any where near the same level of flexibility like we do. This is of course only Avios we’re talking about here, and not other schemes like Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

    • TicknBash says:

Hopefully by throwing Cruz under the bus has bought some time and the 0.8p Nectar deal is locked for a reasonable period.

There will come a time when Gallego / Sean Doyle needs to deliver on bottom line and it’ll be one of the low pickings to ‘play around’ with the numbers.

  • Rob says:

Seems OK on any of them – trade, personal or outlet.

    • Eligold says:

Thanks. Didn’t spend the full amount yet. Will see what else to spend on to hit 650 and then faf around selling on eBay

  • Alan says:

I will be traveling to Portugal next Thursday. Has anyone got experience of using Easyjet’s test partner Randox or recommendation for another test provider.

    Thanks

    • Matty says:

I haven’t had a very positive experience of Randox this week. Kit ordered on Monday for next day delivery still hasn’t arrived. Contacted TNT today and they said they said to contact Randox because TNT hadn’t received instructions. 50 minutes on hold to Randox and they said TNT had attempted to deliver it this morning. My partner was in all day and waiting for the delivery. I checked our CCTV and no sign of anyone walking down the drive or pullling up along the lane at all this morning. TNT app says the kit is still waiting to be collected from Crumlin. Booked another test now.

      • Alan says:

        Thanks,

The whole process seems a bit Heath Robinson.

According to my reading of the rules I could take the return test before I actually leave the UK and avoid any chance of being stuck abroad with a positive result. Probably not what was intended but nothing in the rules seems to prevent me doing that.

  • Jonathan says:

A bit random but it’s not very often the daily chat nears 500 comments!

I know there have been other articles that had far higher numbers, like when Amex announced strict new rules on card sign up bonuses, but things like that are rare

  • Chelseafi says:

Just received email from BA Holiday saying there was a pricing error on my Domes Miramare holiday due in July that I’d booked over 6 months ago! I’d booked 5n HB HL £1820 for 2, BA have advised it should have been £3140, so they can’t honour my original booking price. They have offered £500 BA voucher compensation to either take and cancel holiday or take £500 off the £3140 price. Anyone had anything similar or any advice?

    • AJA says:

Do you still have a balance to pay towards the original price or have you already fully paid for the holiday? If it’s the latter I think you are within your rights to insist BAH does not charge you.

If you have only paid the deposit and still have a balance to pay I think you have to pay the higher amount.

      • Chelseafi says:

Only paid £350 deposit balance due 3 weeks before holiday

        • Lady London says:

I’d push back. You booked in good faith. It’s now the back half of May and July is too soon to find a rebooking for. Especially for a family. I think their offer is actually quite insulting – kind of like you should pick up their mistakes when they’ve sold for a price. And that price gave every reason to be right pricing at the time.

Even if it’s buried in their t’s a d c’s they be are not responsible for their mistakes etc I don’t think they can really make this stick easily. If you’ve paid anything at all towards it then unless they’ve got some very strange t’s and c’s that possibly aren’t even acceptable under UK holiday regulations I would have thought paying even a very small sum would set the price.

I am just wondering if i background BA Hols either didn’t contract their allocation properly so Doumes can reneg, or if Doumes is desperate to get some money flowing and is being thrown £notes (or Eur notes) by other buyers bidding to the skies.

I’d resist as whatever the situation they should honour what they sold. Meanwhile MSE probably has examples of holiday co’s trying this if you can find them. Otherwise CAB (possibly), or legal service if you have one attached to your home or car insurance or employee benefits.

I know you possibly could afford but I don’t think it’s quite right and I think you’re being outbid and they (hotel or hol co)are trying to get out of the contract and re-sell it.

Not what any of us would want to hear – as has been mentioned, by this point any alternative is going to be expensive 😕

      • Chelseafi says:

Thank you, think I’ll take the £500 offer in the current circumstances, we are flexible on dates so if holidays are possible I can book last minute.
