Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 18th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Sorry another curve question, can I use curve cash to top up HL or even Binance with no fees?

Binance I know will pay 1.8% fee on their side.

  • Tiger says:

Can you pay Hong Kong using a debit card?

  • LewisB says:

    Advice please:

I’ve booked LHR-ORD in September using a 241 companion voucher. Just tried to change the return to be from ATL but I’ve been told I can’t do this because of the zone change. Is this a case of phoning back up and speaking to someone else to get it sorted or is this a legit thing?

    • LewisB says:

Not enough seats left if the seats don’t come back available so I can’t risk cancelling.

    • Anna says:

I think that may just be correct re the zone, at least I’ve heard it before! You can certainly try but you may end up having to cancel and rebook if it’s vital – as an open jaw you’d need to do it on the phone as well. I don’t think you can rely on BA cancelling either as it wouldn’t fall within the 300 mile change rule.
If more availability comes up, another option would be to cancel for a FTV, then call back and ask them to use it to rebook you on your preferred route (plus extra avios for the return leg). This would save you the £35 pp fee anyway.

  • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Amex Platinum Personal sign up bonus data point – I was referred for card by Mrs Trotter in February, while the 30k+5k SUB applied. I hit the £4k target spend mid-April but no MRs materialised. Chat agent said I would have to wait for the 3 month SUB period to expire before they’d do anything. Duly chatted them again today and they acknowledged their support team had checked and for some reason the spend tracker was not calculating – now have to wait up to 7 working days for them to rectify but at least they seem to be doing it… In the meantime that’s another month’s fee I won’t get back if (when?) I cancel!

    • Aston100 says:

Mr Trotter, I suspect you’ll be offered at least 35k not to cancel.
That should comfortably compensate you for the additional one month payment.

  • N says:

Any retention points for Bus Plat holders?

About to hit my 10k so lining up my next moves…

    • trader363 says:

Not in my experience – they happily just told me to cancel when I hinted that I would stay even if they gave me something menial like double points. . . .

FYI I didn’t call during UK hours

    • Ryan says:

I got offered 2x points for next 3 months, phoned 3 times and told same thing everytime that the only offer was a downgrade with pro rated refund

  • Writelines says:

Thank you to Lady London, Rob, Rhys & everyone who has posted help regarding BA cancelling flights and how to get them rebooked. I wanted within ticket validity but BA we’re determined to not honour the Avios 2-4-1 October offer. In the end You First rebooked them for me.
I’m not a frequent flyer or in business but this site and the daily chat has been invaluable for me.

  • Ben says:

Quick question – The Amex website is still telling me that the referral bonus is 24,000 points – has the offer been extended?

Also o/t – Anyone know of any pubs in central London that would likely have outside availability for 8/9 people on Thursday?

    • Andrew says:

Yes the referral bonuses have been extended to targeted people.

    • Mouse says:

If you don’t mind a Wetherspoons they are all walk-in only so you can just pitch up and find a table or two

    • Memesweeper says:

      Vinegar Yard near London/Tower Bridge

  • John says:

Ominous (especially last paragraph). Sad for the Aer Lingus staff.

Inevitable once they relocated the planes for the MAN long haul operation.
