The HfP chat thread – Sunday 16th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

I continue to have an extra points bonus offer for Gold is anyone needs it. You get 32,000 MR, I get 15,000 MR. Do any HfP staff have the same?

Obviously most people will have signed up before but a good opportunity if you’re new or the 24 month window has just clossed

    • Andrew says:

I think most people have this, along with the continuation of the 24k referral from Platinum.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

That ended. For some reason they have extended it for me and increased my incentive from 12,000 to 15,000

        • Andrew says:

It ended and then started again the next day with targeted offers for most of us. My platinum currently showing as 24k referral, and the applicant, if eligible, gets 70k now if they take Platinum, so even better than the pre 12 May offer.

          • Amy carpenter says:

Wonder what would happen if you took the referral, got the 70k points and then closed it immediately. They would refund you most of the card fee?

        • DT says:

The Plat one continued for some just like the Gold did. 24k for card holder with 70k sign up bonus

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Just emailed rob a screenshot so you know it is not a wind up

    • Pid says:

No it is targeted as all of my cards have reverted to normal bonuses. No need for another sign up though as previously maxed out and now need too cancel some cards!

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

        Hahaha fair enough!

      • Steve says:

Agreed, definitely targeted as mine are also back to normal bonuses.

      • Russ says:

Neither wife or myself got an offer of bonus points. Instead the credit limit just gets raised. Keep up at this rate Amex and I’ll end up with enough credit to pay off the National debt 🙂

    • Harry T says:

I’ve got this on both my gold credit and gold charge.

  • Andrew says:

For those interested for the Amex offer (I think Rob was) the 10% off at Harvey Nics until Tuesday does include the wine shop.

  • James says:

Upgrading an Amex – was told I need to do it by submitting a new application online? Will this do a credit check against me? Also was told there would be a place to put the current card number in to show its an upgrade but haven’t seen it as of yet.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

      What are you applying for?

It’s nearly always better to be referred for a card and I believe they only do a soft search

      • Andrew says:

Being referred makes no difference to them doing a credit search or not. You’ll be able to find all of Rob’s affiliate links for new applications from the homepage.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

When you are an existing customer being referred, from what I’ve seen others say, they only do a soft search

          • Steve says:

When you are an existing customer they only do a soft search. The being referred part plays no part in that.

          • John says:

It depends on how recently they have done a hard search. And in your internal profile

      • James says:

Yeah so I have had such a nightmare with this. I was hoping to get this bonus as an upgrade from a Gold Charge https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/benefits/upgrade/platinum-charge/index.html
I therefore gave them a call on that number and was told that they cannot do an upgrade over the phone (which was weird), and that I should be applying as a new customer, and would get a chance to enter my current card number when I was applying to show that I was a current member. I used one of the links from the Platinum review on HfP and was completing it (as a new customer) then saw that it would do a credit check, which is weird since I have seen on here many people saying that upgrades should not require a credit check.

I therefore logged in and did a quick live chat. The agent said that I should not be applying online, and should call up the number on the back of my card and ask them to upgrade me, and that was the best way to do it. I called up (again) and was told I could only apply on the website, but would be eligible for the full signup bonus (which seems completely wrong as someone who holds both the Gold Charge and a Gold Credit). She said with regards to my Gold cards I should apply for the Plat then cancel my Gold cards if I decided I no longer wanted them – there was no ability for them to upgrade them.

In the end I used a referral link to sign up with a credit search and have been approved. The email I got however says ‘Register for an American Express account’, but I’m hoping that it’s just a general email.

  • Andrew says:

    Sounds like a convenient theory.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I take it that was in reply to me? It is nearly always better to be referred, higher bonuses etc. excluding if within the 24 month rule.

Yes probably looks odd, however I am not giving out my referral publicly. Against T & Cs and disrespectful to Rob and team. Also I can distinctly remember it last week just not sure where! Have sent my link to Rob if the HfP staff don’t have one, not fussed either way. Just want to help people

      • Alex says:

“Just want to help people” is an overstatement 😉

Those bonuses have been discussed in the last few days.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Different bonuses, this is a targeted extention of the now clossed offer for all

          • Andrew says:

Yes and we were all discussing this during the week as Alex says.

          • James says:

Not everybody lives their whole life on here, Andrew.

  • Newbie says:

Does anyone know how long I have to wait to reapply for the same amex card that I was previously rejected?

  • Triath5 says:

Two part question here for the uber hive mind. I’m booking domestic flights in cash for someone I know who resides in Spain with my Amex Plat. Looking at diff options, GotoGate with AirEuropa is substantially cheaper than direct on website or other vendors.

    1) Does Amex Plat insurance/chargebacks/recourse to fight with vendors in case of Covid-19 cancellations apply if I’m not travelling on the ticket? I assume I wouldn’t be able to claim compensation on behalf of my friend for delays, but if the vendor (gotogate) chooses not to reimburse the money, would insurance cover me?

    2) I know going with OTA isn’t the best move but when I’ve had to fight them Amex Plat has been quite painless in getting back the funds. Any thoughts?

The answer to number #1 really will determine whether or not I book with them. Not sure what Amex would say if I wasn’t traveling on the flight anyway.

    • Harry T says:

Your travel insurance is not relevant because you aren’t travelling – I guess you could give your friend a supp card and they would be covered if they used that to pay (I appreciate that might be tricky logistically). If you had a legitimate right to a refund, then you would always be able to do a chargeback if the OTA or airline refused to refund you. In my experience, Amex are very good for chargebacks – I’ve had success claiming against Virgin Australia and Lufthansa. My girlfriend did a chargeback against Lufthansa and the airline contested – the matter still isn’t resolved. So your mileage may vary.

    • ChrisC says:

if by compensation you mean for a delay or cancellation then your friend would be the one to claim it.

That you bought the ticket makes no difference. Compensation is for the passenger affected

  • John says:

If the ticket is not for you section 75 doesn’t apply (and doesn’t apply anyway as it’s a charge card). Charge back applies because you didn’t get what you paid for. I think the insurance only applies to the cardholders, so the traveller could get their own insurance

  • Aston100 says:

Player 1 was given 10k not to cancel Amex PRG. Player 1 has had the card for many months and has done plenty of spend on that card.
Player 2 was given 35k not to cancel Amex Platinum. Player 2 has had the card barely over a month, with barely any spend.

    No strings attached.
Not sure about these algorithms, as I would have expected player 1 to have been offered 20k and player 2 told to get lost.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Are you neither of the players in this?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

It doesn’t always appear to show much logic, however there must be something going on that we can’t see

      • Magic Mike says:

Whatever system it is is not very smart. Last week I was offered nothing to stop me cancelling a Plat card I’ve had for 8 years with plenty of spend, as I had 35k retention last August…

      • Aston100 says:

A bit like the Sainsburys Nectar offers, right Super Secret Sainsburys Staff?
