The HfP chat thread – Saturday 15th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Can anyone that’s travelled to the U.S recently give an idea of how long it is now taking to get from landside to airside at Heathrow and how it long it took them at the U.S end also as well please? I’m looking at MIA and DFW on the return leg.

I’m hand baggage only travelling alone who is just trying to get an idea of how much extra time I need to factor in for a potential trip.

    Thanks.

    • Patrick Cold says:

How odd to read you are travelling alone.

      • James says:

I see what you did there, Patrick. Very clever… though not so much when the poster above is a different James.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Have I just read the IC 02 website correctly? Apparently they are a govetment approved quarantine hotel!!!

Might go abroad just to spend 10 days with a good view of london 😉

    • meta says:

Just don’t expect any proper food as all the food is shipped in from outside catering company… judging by reports you might end up with half an apple for dinner.

    • Anna says:

Yes, as per previous comments, lots of people having stays in May and June cancelled!

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Thanks Anna, can always rely on you! I’ve been away from HfP for the week. A busy time at SSS HQ!

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Anyone know what the hotel earns for the quarantine? I guess it’s fully borne by the travellers?

      • Tarmohamed says:

I’m trying to work this out myself as we’re trying to work out what % of the £1700 goes towards Security Guards.

As an established Security Company owner, I’m being contacted on a near daily basis by newly incorporated security companies who are desperate for staff at these hotels and are paying below statutory costs. The supply chain is not well managed unfortunately.

  • TJ says:

I’m on legacy black and now have access to the recently launched new range of c@sh backs from Curve (under the ‘Rewards’ tab at the bottom of the screen). You have to actively select the company. A few purchases have already moved to pending status so hopefully the CBs will appear under Curve Cash soon.

  • Sina says:

Anyone knows of any source for Amex plat cardholders like HfP for germany?

Recently applied for Hilton card and amex plat in germany to take 24 months off in UK!

  • Ron says:

Visitmadeira.pt clearly says children under 12 are exempted from testing.

    • Ron says:

This is for DK’s question regarding children testing requirements at Madeira!

      • DK says:

@Ron Yes, I saw that but not sure it was properly updated and it is different from other sources saying 24 months

  • Keith says:

Do Debit Card payments to Virgin automatically reduce the DD due. Mine is still showing as the full amount?

    • Reney says:

Don’t think so that is why I set mine to minimum.

    • Yorkie Aid says:

Only if you haven’t spent since receiving the bill and only if you make the payment at least a week before the DD date. I was shocked last month to find they still pulled the full DD amount even though it then put me over £3k in credit! I have since amended the DD to only take the minimum rather than full amount.

  • bafan says:

Had 2nd vaccine today in Central London. Was in and out with the vaccine itself. Felt very hot all of a sudden afterwards so I went to sit down. When I tell you they mobilized after they saw me stop for a second…within 60 seconds there was 2 nurses, a doctor and an assistant doing blood pressure and temp checks, the doctor went to get me a coffee and a bottle of water, someone else came with more water.

Everything was fine but after spending time living in the US, it reminded me how lucky we are to have the system we have – and it’s comforting to know if something had been wrong it wouldn’t have been for long 👍🏻. Really, really, really great stuff. If I find a feedback mechanism I will write in about it.

    • Aston100 says:

Best feedback method is not to vote for a political party that will destroy and/or sell off parts of the NHS. Also to encourage others to do likewise.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

        Love this reply 🤣

      • Magic Mike says:

Lol. given the Conservatives (presumably that’s who you are referring to) have been in government for the majority of the last 75 years the NHS has been in existence, surely if they were actually going to destroy or sell off the NHS they would have done so by now?

        • Matt says:

There’s always only 24 hours to save the NHS. Not sure what from, but it’s really urgent!

        • kitten says:

          They didn’t have Boris then

      • OHR says:

Perhaps the NHS relies on a growth economy

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

The “save the NHS” kiosk does brisk business every election time. Given that nobody has suggested closing it down I’m always a bit mystified.
The accusation that the Tories will privatise it doesn’t really bear political scrutiny either. If anything Labour brought in the biggest ever privatisation by destroying the “free at the point of delivery” (a phrase that seems to have survived remarkably well given that it’s not true for the most frequently used appointments and services) model by introducing the legislation that allowed charges, and then introducing charges themselves in 1951.

    • Alex says:

      Did they accept AMEX?

    • The cyclist says:

What a fuss, God help us, its only an injection. I’d understand if you had broken a leg

      • TGLoyalty says:

Severe adverse reactions are a real potential side effect from injections.

injecting something into your body isnt just nothing for some poor unfortunate people.

        • Peter K says:

          +1
Say it’s only an injection to those poor few with life changing after effects.

    • Mike says:

Banfan- hope you are feeling better

      • bafan says:

I am, thank you. Hadn’t eaten or drank much as I was in a rush to get there with the District Line not working in Richmond – rookie mistake!

    • Dubious says:

This is an interesting response but not consistent with my mother’s experience- she got told to leave the vaccination centre immediately and go straight to her car. So she waited in her car, in the car park out of sight of everyone…

      • Doug M says:

That’s just wrong. Both my visits have had an after-jab waiting area, anyone driving or cycling was asked to wait 15 minutes to check no immediate reaction.
As an aside I’m 61 have had both jabs, AZ, and not even the most minimal side-effect. YMMV.

  • Charlie says:

Hi. Qatar has a very generous book with confidence policy, which promises that all tickets are fully-refundable.

On their website there’s a standard-looking disclaimer that they can withdraw the offer at any time, and on Flyertalk, some are interpreting this to mean that the offer could be withdrawn not just from new bookings, but even from tickets already issued. Someone claims to have contacted the airline via Twitter and had that confirmed. Which seems pretty outrageous and would render the policy useless for me.

I wondered if you have anyone at the airline you can contact for a definitive comment please?

    • Rob says:

It wouldn’t make any difference. The London office has no influence over Doha, and the team in Doha will happily change their mind over policy from day from the next.

      • Charlie says:

Ah. Is that the kind of thing they’d do? I haven’t had dealings with them before. How reliable would you consider their book with confidence policy?

        • Rob says:

Give that Qatar Airways has been using the pandemic to boost its image, running flights when no-one else would and becoming the world’s largest international airline in the process, it would be odd if it then chose to squander that goodwill.
