The HfP chat thread – Saturday 15th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Hilton app oddity:

A past stay which is nothing to do with me has appeared in my account (one night at Hilton Zürich Airport last week). Never been to that hotel, and my last Hilton stay was in late 2019.

No points have posted, and I get an error if I try to view the receipt. The stay only shows up in the app (not if I sign in from a web browser). Almost looks like an IT trick to create some artificial activity and stop my modest points balance from expiring.

*Hopefully* nothing to worry about. Just wondering if others have experienced anything similar?

    • John says:

Hilton has had recent issues “sharing” data between accounts. Potentially breach of GDPR although so far no identifying information wrongly shared it seems

  • Saiz says:

Amex to Virgin first time transfer. It has been over 4 days now. What has other people’s transfer time been? I know once it’s done, transfer in instsneous. Also, what time in the day do they normally post and do they post on a Sunday too? Need them quickly as have to travel urgently and didn’t read the details properly. Just saw ‘transfer within 30 minutes!’

    • Travel Strong says:

As per the other day – should be instant, so you need to call up for sure. Something has gone wrong.

      • Saiz says:

Thanks, I did call Amex and they said it can take up to 10 days the first time! Called Virgin and they said its in the system and I will just have to wait.

  • Stuart says:

Just had my BA flight to Chania for June 9th cancelled. I am pleased that BA have returned the refund option online – been a while since I had to request one

  • Sam says:

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get tests for going abroad? Including the antigen test for return and Day 2 test.

I apologise, I know this has probably been asked many times.

    Thanks

    • Peter K says:

I personally don’t know but for those that do you’d likely need to give your location.

      • Sam G says:

I’ve seen Randox mentioned – there are 50% codes floating around the net – note their returns procedure though, might notbe good for you if you don’t live near a drop off point

      • James Vickers says:

It sometimes might be worth mix and matching as your test to depart might be time sensitive and some providers might have more convenient drop off locations.

Eurofins have cheap tests but heard some issues with speed of result but obviously that wouldn’t be as critical for your day 2 test.

The lateral flow test virgin are offering is a decent price

    • Frankie says:

I’ve bought Qured to take with me for my antigen return. Was £33 with the BA discount code

    • TGLoyalty says:

Try Expresstest or collinson for the pre departure.

  • Doc says:

    Rob/Rhys
With travel potentially starting next week, is it worth doing an article on where to get PCR testing in London and elsewhere in the UK and which companies offer the cheapest/ fastest time for results etc?
Might be useful although quite time consuming I guess?

  • IanM says:

My Virgin account shows prices for flights in US$ – how can I change that to £pounds? I don’t see how to do it in my profile??

    • AndyS says:

Are you using a VPN that makes virgin think you are in the UK? normally these websites get your location and charge accordingly but there should be an option somewhere to choose country of residence and currency.

      • Iain says:

No – I AM in the UK but it displays in US Dollars!
        No VPN

  • Reeferman says:

Have hit the £4k spend on my Amex Platinum and received a 20,000 points “referral welcome bonus” the same day as hitting the spend.
Any idea how long the remaining 30,000 points are taking to post? I read that customer service agents are saying up to 3 months – but hopefully there’s experience of it being significantly less than that.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Normally it’s at the same time how long has it been since you hit the spend?

      • Reeferman says:

        Thanks
The spend was just 2 days ago – the 20k points hit today, dated 13th.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Wouldn’t worry yet they can be a day or 2 later.

          • Reeferman says:

You’re right. I was just a bit concerned that the official line from customer services is “up to 3 months” – at least according to previous poster(s) on HfP earlier this week. Hopefully they’ll appear much sooner!

    • Anna says:

I got my full 50k this morning, hit the £4k spend yesterday, sounds like something has gone wrong with yours.

    • Jane says:

Exactly same thing happened to me – chat has told me to wait 2-3 days

    • James says:

It doesn’t mean something has gone wrong, there is well reported variability on when the additional bonus is paid. Give it a week and if its not arrived then, get in touch.

  • Nick says:

I’ve added a second MR earning card to my Amex account – do I need to do anything specific to link the new MR account with the old one, or will it happen automatically?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Just add it to your existing Amex account if you can.

There’s no rhyme or reason as to why they don’t link automatically. I’ve had them both link and not over the year. Chat can normally link within a couple days.
