The HfP chat thread – Sunday 9th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

What’s the most anybody has ever earned on here in a year through a cash back card?
    Genuinely interested.
    Cheers

    • TGLoyalty says:

How longs a piece of string?

I imagine there are people who have earned £10k plus from a 1.25% card and a load of google ads to pay for.

      • Rob says:

I got £240 off my MBNA card last year, which was mainly HfP non-UK spend at 0.5%, plus some holiday spend.

        • TGLoyalty says:

And of course you’ll be declaring that to the tax man as a rebate on business spend 😉

    • Ben says:

I got about £850 last year.. helped by the additional 1% for a month in Oct- Nov

    • The Urbanite says:

Seen a screenshot of someone who earned around £30k over 6 months or so on one card!

      • Rob says:

Don’t underestimate how much someone whose business is dependant on Google and Facebook advertising can spend, although I accept that looks a bit toppy even for that.

  • Frankie says:

Do you think I can assume alcohol will be available in the BA lounges from 17th May as indoor dining and drinking returns that day?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Should be able to as a lounge wouldn’t need exemptions

    • Andrew says:

If it isn’t, BA are really taking the P with their Covid excuses.

  • Kevin C says:

10% back at Paul has turned up today on a variety of Amex cards including new ones that weren’t getting offers yet. In-store only until 2/6/21

  • Kazim says:

Hit the spend threshold on the Platinum card 2 weeks ago but still no sign of the 50k MR points. Any idea how long they usually take to post?

    • Amit says:

A lot of discussion re this. Amex will say up to 90 days, but usually the bonus hit once you reach the threshold spend (exc annual fee)

    • Benilyn says:

I got mine the same day it went over the £4k Mark on the tracker.

  • James says:

Does anyone know when Sofitel Heathrow plan to reopen?

    • Anna says:

I think it’s being used as a quarantine hotel at the moment, so I would guess it’ll be when it’s no longer needed for that.

      • James says:

Thanks Anna. What would be the next best option for T5?

        • JamesW says:

We use the T2 Hilton even when flying from T5. It’s so easy just to walk from hotel to the free train that whisks you to T5 is a matter of minutes.

      • Travel Strong says:

Thistle was the only other ‘connected’ option due to the pods, not sure if they have started running again though or whether that would convince me to stay there. I feel like high rated bath road hotels + Bus, or T2\T3 hilton + Train are best options.

  • Sean says:

Data point: Virgin credit card points arrived this morning.

    • Jayne says:

You do realise this will be different for everyone as based on statement date?

      • Sean says:

yes – but a number of people commented last few days that they were waiting, like me.

  • Chrism20 says:

There is apparently a new Esso/Nectar promo coming soon where you can swap 300 points for 5p off per litre of fuel.

The lad in the petrol station didn’t know the start date but apparently the POS has arrived for it.

    Pretty boring offer tbh

@Lady London. Late reply to Havana query on friday: Not sure there is anywhere really top notch in old havana due to the economy and infrastructure – set your expectations to a lower standard than elsewhere in the world. The Capri and Nacional met expectations, and I chose to stay there due to the history. Both are a fair walk from the center, and you can’t expect much luxury, 24/7 AC, or more than a couple of LED’s lighting the bathroom. The shared areas do get more investment, and are great for settling down for an evening of rum and local musicians. I think if I ever went again I would opt for the Casa accommodation options instead, and try for more varied experiences than the hotel life.
Interested if anyone here has a havana accommodation experience they would highly recommend?

    • Craig says:

It’s been a while and I wouldn’t recommend where we stayed. I would add though for Havana take a couple of torches that you can stand up, toilet roll and if you are staying at one of the government run hotels to take some sheets!

      • Cabal of rabid baboons says:

For the proper Havana experience its got to be a Casa, its the most fascinating and friendly place we’ve ever visited. Stay near the Prado.

        • chabuddy geezy says:

I stayed in a great Casa in Vedado many years ago. There is a four points by sheraton now, but the reviews are not great.

    • Hotelier says:

Definitely recommend to stay in someone’s house ( Airbnb …). Stayed in plaza vieja, top floor with balcony to the square, better than any hotel. Stayed for a week in total beginning and end of trip and learnt so much … the last days were spent being part of the family… supermarket, doctor visits, family meals, speaking Spanish makes the whole experience more interesting.
For nice hotels Kempinski Gran Manzana & Iberostar Parque Central my favourites.

      • Hugh says:

We went to Havana in Nov 2019 using our Avios from the earlier amazing Iberia offer. We stayed in 2 different Casa’s and would recommend that as the perfect way to see the old town and experience Cuba.

    • Lady London says:

      Thanks to all
