We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone knows what are the rules from 17 May if transiting through a green country. In particular, if one stays in an amber country for 10 days, then move to green country for 5 days, how long do I need to self-isolate on return to the UK?

    • Pete M says:

Fairly certain, officially, it’s as if you were coming from an amber country, so 10 days? Presumably you’d need to be in the green country for two weeks to avoid quarantine here.

      • meta says:

Last year it was different, you could reduce it.

        • Pete M says:

Something tells me we will look back at how easy things were last year…

          • meta says:

Also FDCO still advises against travel to most countries on the amber list. Good luck getting appropriate insurance…

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you must follow the red list rules.

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the amber list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, and have not visited a country on the red list, you must follow the amber list rules.

What is Portugal’s stance on tourism? Have they said if they’ll allow entry for UK residents for tourism yet?

    • dan loves christmss says:

Portuguese tourism minister was playing positive mood music the other day, so it seems likely. Right now we must seem to be amongst the best people to invite.

    • James Vickers says:

Saw suggestions that they’ll allow UK visitors with proof of test, recovery from covid or vaccine

Do we think AMEX run an partner offers blacklist? I ask as I recently opened a Platinum Card and the next day, 2 offers appear – all very normal. The day after, I call up to cancel my BAPP and get the lecture about not being able to use the 2for1, I’m very flippant about not being able to use them/don’t care about losing them and the BAPP then gets shut down.
Return to the AMEX app 15mins later and the offers on the Platinum have disappeared – really concerned some flag has been put on my account for some reason…

If you cancel a BA travel package before full payment is due, do you get a FTV for the value of the deposit? And if you upgraded your flight with avios, do you get them back as usual or in a voucher?

  • Richie says:

Years ago there were bmi flights to Beja in Portugal’s Alentjo region, perhaps there’s an opportunity for TAP or a UK airline.

  • Dan says:

We’ve had lots of comments on BA First to Club downgrades… I know in a straight downgrade, and possibly in my case where there has been a cancellation of the First booking and a replacement Club booking (same flight number and times), and this is generally viewed as a good thing due to 75% rebate on Avios and fees but a ballache to get it back via MCOL etc. I booked in the half-price Avios companion sale, with an Amex companion voucher on top. This is for Las Vegas in mid-June which is now looking unlikely. I think my question is… can I use the fact that the First booking was cancelled to ask for it to be moved to a more convenient date? I don’t want to lose the half-price companion bit. Things are slightly more complicated in that the flights haven’t been ticketed – on a call with You First (previously when asking for the involuntary downgrade to be noted on the booking), I was told there was a problem with the booking due to incorrect allocation of avios and 241. I also noticed this when booking as was with an FTV from a flight to Pisa – after the booking I noticed the 241 hadn’t been removed and only about 30k avios had been taken from my account! I suppose the only answer is to phone them up and see what can be done but looking for views – good or bad!

So let’s say someone wants to go to a green country (Portugal)
How many tests of any type would u need to get into Portugal and then get back into the UK, and what would be the average overall cost?

    • meta says:

One test to enter Portugal about £50-60 unless you’re vaccinated then exempt. Then one return free test before travel to UK ( or if NHS one not available then £33 for Qured) and £50-60 for day 2 test.

    • Optimus Prime says:

I don’t know if Portugal is asking for a negative test, but when coming back you need a test before boarding (I think this one doesn’t have to be PCR) and then a PCR a test once you’re home. PCR tests now cost £60. For the other one I guess you can use the Qured test for £33 – https://mediacentre.britishairways.com/pressrelease/details/86/0/12877

      • meta says:

Portugal is asking for negative test to enter unless you are vaccinated or have immunity (had covid in the last 6 months).

  • Bill says:

Do you have to wear a mask in Portugal? Imagine sitting around in 30C with a mask. No thanks
