Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Chris says:

Sorry for a question I’m sure has been answered a hundred times but can’t find via search

what happens to excess taxes and miles if booking via an FTV? Got a CW and considering using for CE so obviously huge decrease in both miles and miles

    • Rob says:

You get another FTV unless the ‘change’ is nominal.

      • Chris says:

I actually got an instant refund of the additional miles and a refund back to my original payment for the taxes. So weirdly worked out as a nice way to get £1000 back from BA

I didn’t even ask, that was their default position

  • Roger W says:

Any views on BA extending the 2-4-1 vouchers again, I have one expires Aug 2022 but do not anticipate needing it before. If I do not do the ‘Book & cancel’ for a FTV am concerned that BA will not extend and also stop the option of the cancelling avios trips for a FTV keeping it alive for April 2023.

    • Benilyn says:

No one knows, they might even stop doh g FTV…

    • Lady London says:

do a short shorthaul with current ftv, give it a week, chop it in for another ftv apr 23

Make hay until the sun shines. BA will dump ftv-issuing at the earliest opportunity. And I don’t blame them.

  • Stagger Lee says:

Not sure if anyone will remember but I had a hotel worry about a non refundable booking on the night of the Rammstein gig in Coventry which has now been shifted to next year.

Just had an email from the Novotel offering to move the booking to next year for the same price. Obviously I took them up on the offer.

Really good service to pre-emptively arrange this ahead of when the rooms are due to go on general sale.

  • Pete says:

Wait, just Portugal, Gibraltar and Israel on the green list?

    • The Lord says:

Thought he said 12 countries but only named 3 of them

      • Pete says:

Ah, yes, I am hearing Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Iceland and Brunei too.

        • Pete M says:

I feel so sorry for the people from India and Pakistan spending two weeks in Turkey so they wouldn’t have to hotel-quarantine here…

          • Roger W says:

            I don’t!

          • bafan says:

I don’t. Bending the rules and they get caught out.

Although I think the Turkish already have the Indians in dormitories whilst quarantining…

      • Jonathan says:

Perhaps bigger news is Turkey & Maldives going on the Red List.

Will scupper a lot of people’s plans to do a cheap & easy “quarantine” in Turkey.

        • Pete M says:

Roger and bafan – they are doing the right thing, quarantining. They could have been staying for a night and continuing to the UK. What more do you want?! Most of people don’t have £1,800 lying around…

  • bafan says:

Going green: Portugal incl. Azores / Madeira; Australia; New Zealand; Singapore; Brunei: Iceland; Faroe Islands; Gibraltar; Falkland Islands; South Georgia / South Sandwich Islands; Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha; and Israel.
    Red: Turkey/Maldives/Nepal

    From Paul Charles on Twitter.

About time Turkey went on – all those people using it as a transit hub from India / Pakistan.

    • Mart says:

      Paul Charles has credibility today

      • bafan says:

Agreed. Glad I didn’t book USA, any Med Islands etc 🤣.

        • meta says:

Whoever classifies some of these places on the green list as countries don’t have any credibility in my eyes…

        • Mart says:

What was he thinking tweeting that?
Ruined his credibility, doesn’t know anything more than the rest of us!

  • Stagger Lee says:

Surely UEFA have to move the Champions League Final to the UK?

But knowing them they will insist it carries on in a place no one can realistically travel to while it is in lockdown!!!

    • Doommonger says:

It should be played at Villa Park, but Wembley is more likely.

      The Doomster

      • Stagger Lee says:

Wembley isn’t available as they have the Championship Play-Off Final on that day

    • Harrier25 says:

If the players travel to Turkey they’ll have to self-isolate for 10 days in a covid hotel….not realistic 12 days before the start of the Euros. So if UEFA want the Final to take place on the 29th then they’ll be forced to change the venue.

      • Stagger Lee says:

I’d forgotten about the Euros so no chance at all of the game going ahead in Turkey then

      • Jonathan says:

Is there any kind of exemption for elite athletes?

        • Stagger Lee says:

That really depends on the policies of each country wants to be.

Australians who were at the now cancelled IPL in India have not been given any exemption to return. I think most are holed up in the Maldives until they are allowed back.

    • Alan says:

I imagine it will boil down to how much the English FA is prepared to pay Turkey to agree to relocating the match.

      • Harrier25 says:

It’s UEFA that will be paying Turkey any compensation, not the English FA as they have no say in the matter.

  • The cyclist says:

Great do Easyjet fly to Tritan Da Cunha?
Pointless as already mentioned, try getting into Australia or New Zealand as a tourist before 2022. Traffic light system means F all, as the decision as to whether we enter the countries is wholly dependent on them and not the UK

  • Ross says:

Is there confirmation of the Amber List?
