The HfP chat thread – Friday 7th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Morning ! Thanks to those who replied to me last night about paying off credit agreements with Amex etc . I wish there was a notification alert when you’ve had a reply ..!

    • Anna says:

I put another reply on earlier today!

      • Keely says:

Sorry Anna! Been out walking , only just picked my phone back up …I’ll take a look ..

  • YC says:

AMB weekend night – Is this book by or use by? Managed to book past expiry but don’t want to get caught pants down at check in

    • Matt says:

I think the rule is you have to have a valid certificate in your account at check in.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You can book without any voucher in your account but you must have a valid cert when you check in.

Therefore you will have you pants pulled down if theres no valid cert on your account.

      • YC says:

Thanks! On an aside, they prompted me to renew my ambassador status and it mentioned the 10% rebate on redemptions (which I thought was no longer offered?)

  • Matt says:

Cancelling IHG night booked with CC voucher: should the voucher reappear in my account (it wouldn’t have passed its extended expiry date)? If so what would be expected time frame for it to reappear? And if it should have reappeared who should I chase?
Many thanks as always for insights and suggestions.

    USA travel /green list:
I assume the USA will be on the green list.
However, the USA are still ‘closed’ to tourists. Does anyone know when that is likely to change?

I have info from the below 2 websites:

    https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/from-other-countries.html

    https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/News/visas-news/presidential-proclamation-coronavirus.html

Depends on how charitable Biden is feeling!

I think we could see an announcement by the 4th July.

      • mutley says:

Unfortunately the traffic light system means nothing. Whether we can travel is dependent upon whether the destination country allows one in.

        • Olivia says:

The exact point I’ve been making for the last few months – no point getting excited about the US being on a corridor in the UK government eyes while UK citizens aren’t allowed in by US Customs.
Had LHR-LAX in less than 2 weeks cancelled by BA and looking to rebook to Austin in Oct for the US GP. Hoping Biden will have made up his mind by that point!

    • MattB says:

Think USA will be Amber initially, infection rates still higher than many European countries that won’t be green and vaccinations stagnating.

      • Lord Doncaster says:

Indeed. I can’t see the US being green if there are European states with lower infection rates being classed as amber

        • Pete says:

This is where the political angle of the green list may be interesting! But I also don’t expect to see the US green from May.

  • Keely says:

Just looking into airtime rewards… states visa/MasterCard payments but then also includes Apple Pay symbol – does this mean you can use Amex to pay too or just restricted to the other credit cards ..? Thanks

  • Colin MacKinnon says:

Booking.com boss says holiday prices are going to rise because of pent-up demand.
Tui says it will subsidise Covid tests – presumably to encourage demand.

Both on BBC today, but which is true?

    • Simon says:

Tui will save you £30 on your Covid test to encourage you to spend 40% more on the same holiday to Benidorm that you cancelled last year.

  • Russ says:

Just had a brain fart and thought I’d come across the arbitrage opportunity of the century by using MR points to buy Emirates points in their 100% sale. They wanted about 25,000 points for10,000 Emirates miles. I’ll get my coat….

This morning just after 6am someone made a reservartion at ibis budget Bishops Stortford London Stansted Airport. It wasn’t made by me. Worried that my Accor account had been hacked I took a look at current reservations and all mine are there. This spurious reservation isn’t listed as an active reservation. Then I thought it could be in cancelled reservations – which it isn’t. Reading the email confirmation, the reservation was confirmed using a credit card that wasn’t mine. Furthermore I can not retrieve the reservation on the Accor website. The error is “No reservation matches your search criteria. Please modify your request”. I was expecting it to be found and either active or cancelled.

    Any ideas ?

    • Benilyn says:

Call hotel. Call Accor. Change passwords on email and Accor.

    • Lord Doncaster says:

This happened once to me. A guest with the same name but no Accor number had checked into an Accor hotel and the hotel added my accor number to their stay and credited the points to my account. Very weird

      • Lord Doncaster says:

No fraud btw – The guest paid for their stay themselves 😂

      • Rob says:

I’ve had it a handful of times with IHG over the years. Once it triggered a bonus which I would otherwise not have got ….

      • Lyn says:

We’ve had the opposite problem with an IHG hotel in London. They replaced my husband’s Spire number in their own hotel reservation system with one belonging to a previous guest at the hotel with no IHG status. We found out when the gave us Rob’s proverbial room overlooking the bins and asked if they had another room available.
