The HfP chat thread – Friday 7th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Are there any decent Economist subscription offers floating around? I haven’t seen anything Avios-related since the 3-month subscription offer back in Feb, which has now expired for me…

  • Maximus says:

Is anyone using the Nationwide Plus account? How does the insurance offering compare with Amex Plat?

    • Bs says:

Covers mobile phone. Travel more restrictive in terms of length, but can cover existing conditions. Also get roadside cover. Free cash withdrawals abroad. Recommend

      • Zoe says:

Can extend trip length for extra fee, we did it for Australia. I’ve got a joint account with my 23 year old daughter so that we both get the travel and roadside benefits. I have never used the phone cover but think you need to post the damaged phone to them so always worth keeping an old one in your man drawer.

      Claim
About 2 years ago when I had to claim for return flights due to death of close relative it was a PITA.

I had to submit claims several times and their system was archaic and very slow with no input from a real person.

I had to push back several times and only got a refund after I raised a complaint.

This triggered a supervisor who rang me and we discussed the problems with their system.

All was resolved after this-with her waiving the excess-but it should have been a lot easier.

Mrs B medical condition is covered. I always pay to extend to Worldwide cover (extra £40 IIRC)

      Never used Amex.

    • Definitas says:

I have used NW for a few years. As another poster said, the interface to upload claims is clunky and they are slow to process claims but, on the positive side, they are very easy to contact by phone and I had two complex claims in short succession which were dealt with very fairly. (It’s underwritten by UK Insurance which is part of Direct Line). We visit family in the US, sometimes for a couple of months and I have never had a problem getting a trip extension for a reasonable sum as well as existing medical conditions covered. The debit card gives free overseas cash withdrawals and a “member’s” credit card is available which is fee free on foreign purchases. Breakdown cover is for the account holder(s) in any car, including as a passenger. I don’t know anything about the phone cover. It’s a good basic package for £13 a month and extensions are very reasonably priced. (I don’t have any connection to NW!)

      • Maximus says:

        Thanks all. Two follow-up questions:

        1. Does the “all trips must start and end in the UK” clause mean that ex-EUs are excluded?
        2. Does the breakdown cover include rental cars?

        • Blindman says:

          Q1
          No/Yes-sort of:-
I looked into this when we were doing the RTW from Madrid on Iberia.

We had a one way LHR-MAD booked separately as the start of the 3 month trip.

          Then a MAD-MDE

If we had missed the MAD-MDE that flight would have not been covered under the insurance as it was not the initial flight of our “trip” (Missed departure).

However the whole trip from UK was covered for the other components of the insurance.
Not that I had to claim to find out!

Expecting a flurry of BA emails at 5.01pm today with rescheduled and cancelled flights. Poor call centre staff this weekend.

    • Pete says:

I didn’t get the impression they particularly expanded the flight plan from 17 May onwards on most routes?

      • Sam G says:

They won’t also slash the schedule. It’ll now be legal to travel and for plenty of people (myself included if I was so inclined) 5 days home quarantine + test to release is no big deal

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Agree

        • The Lord says:

Hope so, don’t want to have to re-plan our wedding for a 4th time!

          • mike says:

The Lord – same person every time or different !

          • The Lord says:

Ha made me laugh. Same person but might be looking for someone else if this one gets cancelled too!

        • Optimus Prime says:

Assuming you actually receive the test on your 5th day and not the 12th one…

          • TGLoyalty says:

You’re able to leave isolation to take a lamp test (result 1-2 hrs)

  • Emily says:

Hi! BA have pushed their direct flights to Nassau (Bahamas) to now only start on 30 May, what are the chances they’d bring that forward to just after the 17th? Is this wishful thinking on my part? Don’t know how easy/difficult it is for them to reschedule flights. Desperately hoping it’s on the green list, would even take the Amber list at this point! Thank you!

  • Nick says:

Signed up for deliveroo. I have a £10 promo code for order. Small print says selected restaurants only.

All the ones I’ve tried, do not allow me to use this code. Any ideas?

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s worth trying over the weekend as there is usually a larger selection of outlets available Friday/Saturday

    • Benilyn says:

What code (if not unique)? Recently a lot of codes are region restricted.

  • Andy says:

Well looks like I’m going to Tokyo next week after all! fly a week today and BA still not cancelled the flight?!

    • Pete says:

Why would they – there is still cargo and passengers travelling. Are you eligible to enter, though?

    • kitten says:

Don’t blink. Give it till 72-48 hours ahead. You could wait longer but need to allow time in case of any difficulties getting through.

  • MarkH says:

Morning – I want to take advantage of the Harrods offer on my Plat before cancelling.
I think I read a while back that gift cards do trigger the offer – but does anyone know if that includes online gift cards?

    • TGLoyalty says:

It has on previous offers. As long as They still process the gift cards via the standard checkout it’ll work.

      • Andrew says:

Worked in early January under the last offer, but haven’t tried since then. Although BA store originally tracked with full Avios, I got a claw back last week (classic BA store timescales!) so don’t expect the Avios, but you might be lucky and at least have a loan of Avios should that be helpful!

        • MarkH says:

          Perfect – thanks both

          • MarkH says:

Tried it now and looks like we’re in business as got the offer used email.

  • Red Flyer says:

Any suggestions on how to quickly earn non-flight Avios on Iberia Plus so I can do a redemption with them after transferring across some points from BA?

    • Red Flyer says:

Just managed to convert some Bonvoy points to Iberia Plus so hoping to Nan a bargain redemption from Madrid to Buenis Aires now – any idea how long combine Avios from BA take to post?

    • kitten says:

Iberia site, like many, shows a different selection according to location/language. Credit card offers and suchlike only work in their markets but other things quite likely work even where not publicised
