The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 4th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Just booked the brand new Premier Inn Plymouth Derry Cross in July for £50 per night. Will be there for 9 nights. No miles angel other than using an Amex but a really good deal.

Perfect base to explore Devon and Cornwall

    • Russ says:

Bit of a niggle about the parking but otherwise that sounds a good deal you’ve got yourself SSS. Yep, shame Premier don’t have a loyalty program but at least you can pay by point earning cards.

Premier Inn are doing rather well for a rank outsider. They’ve also got places in Germany and the Middle East.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Thing is, a nearby multi story is £12 a day so not that bad, you just have to put a bit of effort to find it but 100% worth it

      • Swiss Jim says:

Rank outsider? Largest hotel group in the UK aren’t they?

        • Russ says:

This is HfP. Usually the readership likes to think we’re too refined for Premier Inn 😉

          • Rob says:

Business Traveller is giving away a Premier Inn stay in a competition this week ….

          • Genghis says:

I’m a big fan of Premier Inn. Decent rooms for a decent price.

  • MCO says:

Anyone had success recently with paying the yearly fees monthly on the Bus Plat card? I have been advised this was never an option. Can Chat do this as I have been in touch with Brighton.

  • Shaz says:

Quick question for anyone who knows – how long is the Virgin Atlantic voucher (from Virgin credit card) valid for under the current covid situation? And do you need to book the ticket by then? Or take the flight by the date?

    • Carol says:

At the moment they are issuing them for 30 months validity. It is a book by date on the voucher

    • Alex says:

If you message virgin on their WhatsApp service they can send you the expiry dates for any vouchers you have 👌

  • lumma says:

Anyone ever had a card blocked by a retailer? For some reason I can no longer use one of my AMEX cards in Sainsbury’s. AMEX say it’s nothing at their end and my other cards all work (this card works via Google pay). It’s not just one branch either, it’s all Sainsbury’s

    • Andrew says:

      Including Argos?

Sounds like they or their merchant services provider has blocked a card in error, either make contact direct with Sainsbury’s or just put it down to experience and get a replacement card.

      • lumma says:

I haven’t tried Argos but it’s every Sainsbury’s I’ve been in. I have occasionally made multiple purchases in multiple stores in the same day so I’m wondering if they’re worried it a stolen card?

    • mark2 says:

You could ask for a supplementary in your own name with relationship type ‘other’. This gives another card for Shop Small etc.

  • PK says:

Using Bendy metal made a transaction for 2k ,transaction shows in curve and the underlying card and not the final card. Do i need chase support or wait for it to rectify itself.

  • James says:

If I choose to cancel my BA flight at the end of this month, can I claim a FTV? Is it as simple as that or are there fees/stipulations etc attached?

    • AJA says:

@ James, yes it is that simple. Just make sure you apply for it no later than 1 hour before scheduled departure time. I’d wait until the day before as there is a chance BA might cancel the flight in which case you have more options.

  • Fred S says:

Does anyone know whether the annual £150 Curve Metal fee goes through as a normal purchase? Think of charging it to CoT

    • lumma says:

      Yes it does

      • lumma says:

Appears on a bill as “Curve Subscription”, not as CRV*

Not sure of the MCC code though

    • JDB says:

You can also pay the Curve card fee on Amex.

      • Fred S says:

Just tried but the app won’t accept Amex…is there a workaround?

  • Triath5 says:

    Data point on Amex referral:

Referred Player 2 for a fee-free Amex (2nd referral in the last 3 weeks) from a Plat yesterday evening. Points landed this morning bringing total points to 48k! P2 isn’t eligible for any sign up bonuses or anything but not too fussed. Will spend on the Amex and maybe cancel within a year.

Impressed with Amex’s speed of depositing referral bonuses – so tempted to go for a 3rd referral but don’t want to tempt the wrath of the Credit Score gods!

Hopefully Amex re-runs the 0.9p/MR promo for Plats from last year and I can cash in some of these points…

    • Manny_D says:

From what I have read over the past week, it seems Amex don’t run a hard check for an additional account. So shouldn’t effect your credit too much.

      • Aston100 says:

        This is correct.
I’ve applied for and received 3 cards in 3 weeks (for a total of 4 primary cards).
Checked my Experion report and there is nothing from Amex since last year.
