The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 4th May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just had 1500 Avios clawed back for something I purchased in June 2020, and wasn’t returned at all. Not going to bother contacting them to reinstate the Avios.

But that leaves me wondering how long back can they go to claw back the Avios? At the moment, it seems pretty random for them to pick a transaction from a year ago, and claw back the Avios for no apparent reasons.

    • Andrew MS says:

In my case , they often clawback Avios on insurance purchases ( telling me wrongly that i navigated away from the website) many months later

    • TGLoyalty says:

That’s why that store is my last option.

  • John says:

Insane price hikes not just in Scotland then.

(Good idea though, if you don’t have kids)

I’ve noticed rental car ‘shortages’ – ok, extremely high prices, across the US for later this year. Hadn’t thought about U-Haul… could be a great idea 🙂

  • Desi Rea says:

Has anyone had a retention offer recently when their Amex platinum was due for renewal?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

If you put spend through it, you’ll get it

    • DeB20 says:

They refused me a retention offer although I have been an Amex card holder for 26 years, of which 20 years as a personal Platinum card holder.

Instead they went overboard explaining that they recognised my loyalty and they promised that they will have a lot of future offers coming my way to justify the annual fee. Over three calls with the retentions team, they were almost pleading that I don’t cancel. Incidentally, my calls were automatically routed to the retentions team after my first call to them to enquire about my options.

To be fair to Amex, the number of offers on all my cards have increased. Some of them have been useful and I have already had approximately £150 cash back in the first month since renewal.

      • Chris says:

I’ve just been rejected on my 3rd attempt as well. So far just trying to push me towards Gold, given me no alternative offer 🙁

        • Genghis says:

3rd attempt – they’re calling your bluff, clearly.

          • Chris says:

you may well be right, but the guidance is normally HUACA so thought it was worth a try

TBH now they’ve called my bluff, i’m going to action it. I’m going to manufacture my MR to a redeemable balance then i’ll just cancel it

    • Lee says:

Got 35k and the £175 shopping offer added. First attempt for a 3 month old account.

      • Adam says:

My 1st attempt was unsuccessful, so I cancelled the card. I called their bluff and lost 🙂

  • Fm says:

In terms of Ambassador bookings at intercontinental hotels, is it possible to use a Virtuoso agent to pay the best flexible rate and redeem the weekend voucher, or does the booking need to be made online?

    • Rob says:

No, needs to be booked online via intercontinental.com/ambweekend

  • Memesweeper says:

Previously reported here that IC ‘the George’ in Edinburgh had no redemption availability in 2021. Pleased to report it does now… so pile in 🙂

    • BP says:

Had availability for weeks now. Fluctuates between 51,000 and 85,000 points for same dates so keep checking. Some good e-upgrade offers – £60 for a junior suite and £120 for the best suite in the hotel.

  • gareth says:

Top prize in the premium bonds this month only held since feb this year! Lucky devils. Wonder if it could be a head for points person!

  • ChrisW says:

I recently was approved for a BA Amex card that I have held and cancelled within the last 24 months, so ineligible for the welcome bonus. When I activated the card it then said ‘if you spend £x you will receive the welcome bonus’ and my account is tracking my spending to reach the required spend for the bonus.

Would you think this does mean I’m eligible for the welcome bonus? Surely they wouldn’t be encouraging me to meet the minimum spend and they say ‘oh by the way, you’re ineligible’?

    • John says:

This happened to me when had only 9 month break between BA cards – can only say I did receive the bonus although many have tracker and don’t receive bonus – dodgy IT system !!

    • TGLoyalty says:

This happened to me a while back and I got it but another time I didn’t, I wasn’t eligible so wasn’t going to complain I didn’t get it.

    • Chris says:

I’m in exactly the same situation. Rejoined as i want a 241, but seems to be tracking towards the bonus 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • Marco says:

Only have an Amex Gold but someone uses my referral link for BAPP. Assume it’ll just come through as MR for the referral for me?
