The HfP chat thread – Monday 3rd May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I took out a Platinum Amex during the recent 100k bonus offer, but see that the welcome bonus which has been paid on my account is only 40k points. This posted on Thursday. Does anyone know if this will be adjusted, or have Amex made a mistake and I need to contact them?

  • geoff says:

Hilton status question – found info on here about upgrades vs status not being across all hilton brands but can’f see anything about free breakfast.
Do you get free breakfast at HGI in UK with gold/diamond?

  • Definitas says:

Is there a way to guarantee getting through to Amex Brighton on the phone? I got through to Philippines? twice in succession last week and was unable to get the agents to understand a fairly simple query and sort it out.

    • Morris says:

Take out the ICC card? 🙂

    • Andrew says:

Just ask to speak to Brighton when they answer and they will transfer you.

    • A says:

Happening with increased regularity I have noticed too…
Either hang up & call back later, or ask to be transferred

    • the_real_a says:

You can literally ask them to put your through to the UK. They do it without fuss usually.

      • Aston100 says:

Offshore have always resisted when I’ve asked to be put through to Brighton.
However, on my last two phone calls, I said “cancel my card” to the automated voice system thingy as the reason for the call, and ended up with Brighton personnel picking up.

    • Aston100 says:

The off shore agents seem to be getting worse.
      Their skills are so poor.
I swear it wasn’t like this in 2019.
I wonder if these are new recruits brought in to bolster the lack of experienced personnel who may have been lost or away long-term due to Covid?

      • The cyclist says:

You just can’t trust Johnny Foreigner eh Aston.

        • Lord Doncaster says:

It’s more that the staff AMEX employs in the Philippines are rarely empowered to do anything that provides a satisfactory level of service.

  • Elaine J. says:

Is there a sign up bonus for joining Rewards for Thoughts at the moment?

  • EDA says:

I got my first lot of 1,500 avios appear on the Barclays app under “Avios you’ve collected with Barclays”. I also see a +25,000 in the list of transactions which isn’t included in the total as if it was pending? Does this mean I qualify for the bonus avios? Has anyone had them post yet?

    • Craig says:

Same situation as you, no doubt they will post at some point in line with the t&cs.

  • Steve says:

Via work I have a corporate Amex, that I can view and access on my personal Amex account. I do not have a business of my own.

Any way I can benefit from this arrangement? I can’t put personal spend on that card, but wondering if this sort of corporate link with Amex can be used to my advantage in any other way?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

You can choose to pay £36 a year to turn the card into a rewards points earning cards.

Not all employers allow this, some won’t pay for it but will let you pay for it.

      • Sina says:

If you have a personal MR account, call amex and they will link it for free, subject to your employer allowing it.

      • Alex says:

My friend does this, she has to pay it herself however for the amount of earning its without doubt worth it!

      • Steve says:

Interesting! Not much spend going on it right now (primarily used when travel resumes), but will likely be worth the £36 is my corp scheme allows, will look into it, thanks.

  • HeadingForNoPoints says:

Are amex doing any retention offers for platinum card holders outside of the lump sum points? for example points multiplier etc

    • Andrew says:

Not heard of any. Seems to be lump sum or nothing, with the leaning to the latter.

    • James Purvis says:

12 months since I last tried and was successful. Will be trying again in the coming days.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I’ve had 3 in the last year on gold. If you gave the gift of the gab, its perfectly possible to get a lot more frequently than once a year

  • Benilyn says:

Blacklane – do you get charged immediately, or at the time of the ride? Looking to book for November potentially.

Also how are they with baby seats with peoples experience, says not guaranteed.

    • APB says:

Don’t know about the baby seat but your card is authorised at the time of booking for the full amount which then drops off and then you are charged immediately after the ride
