The HfP chat thread – Sunday 2nd May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’m popping up to Manchester next with with BA. Any alcohol served in Club? For once, I’m not driving when I land…

  • Patrick Cold says:

Worrying signs for an absolute jem of a redemption, namely the five nights for 380,000 points in a Conrad Rangali Water Villa. Someone from Flyertalk emailed regarding lack of availability and received this reply:

“Rooms 315-330 will no longer be standard WV’s after the renovations.”

That rules out the 50% best villas in terms of sunset views and seclusion.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Oh dear. The self entitled elites will takeover the Marriott resorts now.
Not surprising given the success of Amex Aspire card.

    • Babyg says:

It was always weird that beach villas and overwater villas were the same price, hopefully the fact that the Wardorf is only 120k for a much better hard product will keep the prices down at the Conrad.

      • Patrick Cold says:

The 120 WA rate is pretty scarce though isn`t it?

      • Ikaz says:

Waldorf standard price is up to 150,000 since last week actually… And is indeed is rarely available on points

        • Patrick Cold says:

Actually there are 2 nights next week at 120,000; the problem being that the following 5 nights come in at 2,000,000 points each!

          • Babyg says:

didnt know it was 150k now cripes… guess that allows conrad to list their OVW at 120k now… personally i thought conrad is overblogged/overrated, whilst you may get a great deal on the accommodation you typically spend on average about $500 a day on food/meals for a couple (plus spendy seaplane etc). For Wardorf I have used openhotel to alert me to awards availability and sucessfully stitched together a 8day stay at Wardorf… more stressful and no 5 nights for 4 deal, but its doable (or at least it was)..

          • Ikaz says:

Hilton has dynamic pricing, so for May it had some nights at 120,000 and others at 150,000, no availability after that when I looked last week

          • Ikaz says:

You can see the increased cost in points here, although it seems like all days currently available on standard points are 120,000 points (I saw some nights at 150,000 a few days ago): https://pointsexplorer.hiltonhonors.com/list

    • Ali M says:

      😭😭😭

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Your being ripped off if you spend $500 a day on F&B at the Conrad Maldives. Seaplane fees are normal for virtually all Maldive resorts unless your go to WA where your ripped even more for a 30 min boat ride.

        • Patrick Cold says:

I have been four times and certainly did not spend that amount. A large, free breakfast at 10.00am helps of course.

    • Benilyn says:

Will be upset if WA is perm 150K most nights now 😞

      • Rob says:

It shows as 150k if you use Hilton’s pricing tool which lists the cap per hotel.

  • Andy says:

How long does it take for MR points to arrive in a BA account? I transferred them at 10am Friday. Checked yesterday at 11am and it said it was completed but the points still aren’t in my BA account.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Datapoint: Amex 3 bonus MR per £1 on Sainsbury’s offer – works on buying gift cards.

    • Andrew says:

      Was there any doubt?

      • TGLoyalty says:

I don’t know why there ever is with Instore purchases the only issue is when they use 3rd parties to process online GC sales.

Unless it’s a flight Amex can’t see what you’ve bought.

  • SteveC says:

Hi, anyone else struggling to login to Creation card via app or online banking?
    SteveC

    • Pid says:

It was fine use online banking this afternoon.

    • Alex says:

Yeah i am – was fine earlier(early afternoon) can’t now though

      • SteveC says:

Sprung back to life almost as soon as I posted after not working this afternoon

    • Harry T says:

Tbh I have intermittent problems logging into Creation – their IT is terrible. However, there are pros to their dismal IT.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

I find first thing in the morning the dreaded “Site under Maintenance” message a lot but usually rectifies itself with a few refreshes.

  • YC says:

Not quite a points question (but will earn loads of points in my book) – Any personal recommendations for pest control (potentially mice) in London? Spotted some odd droppings….

    • Aston100 says:

Having a cat in the house sometimes helps in deterring rodents.
You can also get points from pet insurance.

      • Number9 says:

My cat brings the mice in ….I’ve got humane traps with pieces of Mars bar in my rooms.

    • Ben says:

      Where abouts are you based?

  • Anthony says:

Hi, is BA asking for any COVID test for flights to Scotland?
I’ve been trying to find the information, but I can’t seem to find it. Thanks

    • Harry T says:

Why would you need a covid test to enter Scotland? Are you flying from outside the UK?

    • Ikaz says:

No test required if it is a simple London to Scotland flight on BA

      • Anthony says:

Thank you both, just a london to Scotland flight, so many rules to keep up, that I end up getting lost.

        • BrianW says:

Sorry @Anthony, my reply crossed with yours. I travel to London weekly from Edinburgh or Glasgow, no test required confirmed. All you can expect is being pulled to the side and quizzed by the cops on your ‘reason for travel’ if you’re unlucky north of the border. Had it at both Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports over the last few months. There is never anyone at arrivals in Heathrow!

          • Anthony says:

Thank you, I guess that with leisure travel now allowed they won’t be quizzing anyone… have a goodnight.

          • TGLoyalty says:

No more pulling up and quizzing as leisure travel is allowed

    • BrianW says:

If you’re coming here from outside the CTA at the moment, you’re gonna need £1,750 for your hotel 11 night hotel bill, a Covid test’s the least of your worries.

  • Kurt Kraut says:

Anyone have an educated idea of when we can expect Hilton executive lounges in the UK to open again? Thanks.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Educated idea Post May 17th

Uneducated guess whenever business picks up so probably late June/July.

      • Kurt Kraut says:

Thanks for both the educated and uneducated view. Was hoping to leverage my diamond status achieved last year on free nibbles and booze.
