Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Saturday 1st May

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Can I ask for an Airtime referral code

    Thanks

  • Memesweeper says:

  • Nigel W says:

Not sure if ever reported here, but even though a supermarket’s bank debit card says you cannot earn Clubcard points on financial companies. have earned some doing payments with Vanguard.

    • 747_Brat says:

Is this the new Clubcard Pay debit card that earned you points?

      • Nigel W says:

Nope, the one that came with the Tesco Bank current account

  • MCO says:

My MCO-DUB-LHR Aer Lingus flight has been cancelled can I ask BA to rebook me onto the direct MAN flight instead. Or is the 300 miles rule only on BA flights?

    • Anna says:

When is that for? Is the MAN flight any more likely to be running? I’m not sure if BA classes Aer Lingus as a OW partner yet so you might struggle to get them to agree. You’re still entitled to re-routing though, whatever they say.

      • MCO says:

My flight was in a few weeks so will change it too later on in the year. Are they likely to offer me BA instead? I would prefer that.

        • Lady London says:

I dont even think you’d have to ask them for that specifically. I think they’d try to offer you that instead without your asking.

Why not work out what date you want to rebook to, call them when you’re ready and just ask for the date? see what they offer you, I’d be surprised if BA own direct flight does not spring to their mind quite quickly

          • ChrisC says:

I think MCO was wanting the new EI flight MCO- MAN and then MAN to LHR?

But if BA offers their MCO- LHR then IMHO it would be unreasonable to refuse that if offered. After all that’s the ticketed destination .

MCO would then also get avios based on the BA chart plus tier points as well.

          • Mco says:

            Thanks all.

  • Aston100 says:

Is there such a thing as a Wise referral code?
If so, anyone have one please?

      • Harry T says:

You get a fee free transfer up to £500. I only get something if three people use my link and then transfer £200 or more.

        • Aston100 says:

Thanks Harry. Was thinking of using this when I get the dollar card later this year as it sounds like Revolut might not work (or not work easily anyway).

          • Harry T says:

            You’re welcome.

My thoughts entirely! I am also probably getting the dollar card, providing my planned trip to the USA can go ahead in August. See you there?

          • mutley says:

Sadly its unlikely that US travel will be open to non US passport holders/Green Cards any time soon.

          • Rob says:

Target is 1st July and may come sooner – Biden is over for a visit soon and may announce it then.

    • Harry T says:

USA will be open by Independence Day, I’d bet my entire membership rewards balance on it.

      • Richster says:

        I hope so too!

      • mutley says:

I hope you are right Harry, I have not been to our US head office since March 2020, since then I have had 5 scheduled trips booked and then cancelled.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Want to visit Cairo late next year but pricing up BA & AVIOS in CE I was astounded to see £647 in taxes & on the A320 (ouch). Any other direct flights using points anyone can recommend?

  • Will says:

anyone get their bonus 500 Virgin points email credit link for first virgin Red earnings?

    • Craig says:

I did but had to chase them, all done using Twitter and very quickly resolved.

      • chabuddy geezy says:

Who did you tweet to on Twitter?

        • Craig says:

          Virgin Red.

          • chabuddy geezy says:

Thanks Craig, Virgin Red are saying opening the current account was not eligible for the 500 point bonus. This is going to be fun to resolve!

  • Anuj says:

I remember seeing you can get hotel points for the managed quarantine where you have to pay £1750? I know someone who’s arriving back to the UK soon.

    • Rob says:

Third party booking so unlikely ….

      • meta says:

Apparently Marriott properties are giving out points. Somebody posted here a week or so ago.
