We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Airtime referral code please? Ideally from someone that hasn’t referred anyone. Thanks

  • @mkcol says:

Using bizarre code I’ve witnessed on here before, so apols….

So to top up Che I can use Solihull with Bendy-fronted – right? Or can I skip Bendy & do it directly?
And I need to repay the balance in full on Solihull immediately to avoid interest – right?

    • Harrier25 says:

      Skip bendy.

      • Dr Tom says:

Solihull to Che direct always get declined for me. Just tried it again to check. Solihull to Che through Bendy works, but with the £300 per three days limit.

    • Harrier25 says:

and yes, pay off immediately to avoid interest.

      • @mkcol says:

Ah thank you for both bits of clarification.

        • Yorkie Aid says:

And it appears to be limited to the “cash” portion of your credit limit (20% of total) in my case. But Solihull Black doesn’t appear to have charged me any interest when I’ve left it for a couple of days. Unless it only shows up when the statement is prepared. Have only had Che a couple of weeks.

          • Secret Squirrel says:

Yep, at statement date you get to see what fee interest you have been charged.

          • @mkcol says:

Oh that’s good to know about how limited it is.
With the cruddy overall credit limit I’m wondering whether it’s worth bothering.

          • Yorkie Aid says:

Thanks @Secret Squirrel. I think I shall go and pay that off now then!

    • Newbie says:

Any hints at what Che is?

  • Tim says:

Fairly curious what the community values Hilton points at nowadays? Pricing is currently so variable, and I’m stuck trying to figure out what’s reasonable…

    • Froggee says:

Me – one third of a penny.

    • Travel Strong says:

Personally 0.3p GBP is the minimum acceptable value. 0.5p is good. And 0.7p is excellent (e.g. the rare 15000 point redemption for a room that is a little over £100 cash).

      • Aston100 says:

        Interesting.
So if given the choice between BAEC and Hilton, would you move MR to BAEC?

        • Peter K says:

It depends on what your goals are. If it is a Hilton redemption and you need the points then that will make sense.

If you need more avios to fly a specific route then go that way.

Now the Avios to nectar route is available however, with hotels it might make more sense to convert MR to Avios to nectar, then use the nectar at ebay and then use the cash saved to buy Hilton points.

          • Aston100 says:

Peter, I think the BAEC to Nectar route is a viable option at this time.
I’m struggling to work out the hilton honors points prices. Seems harder to do than IHG in my opinion, but probably because I’m doing it wrong.
            Thanks.

        • Travel Strong says:

Exactly why I keep as MR rather than transfer anywhere as a matter of course.

When it’s 1MR=2Hilton, it could go either way if I needed the points, when 1MR=3Hilton (bonus promotions happen regularly) the hilton value is certainly easy to achieve… (and better value than transferring Virgins to Hiltons.)

  • HFP Reader 2021 says:

Hi All, long time reader first time commenter.

My Amex Gold card is due to expire in a month’s time, it currently has approx 15K MR points on it. I was going to cancel it a month ago, but they offered me 10K points on a 2.5K spend, which I’ve now hit. I also have the BAPP card and really would struggle to justify keeping the Gold in addition to it (got it free this year and would need to pay next year).

Sorry for the stupid question but is there anything I need to do/think about before cancelling the card? Presumably I just transfer the MR points to Avios, settle the balance, call up to cancel and I’m done? Will they be upset that I took the retention offer and I’m still cancelling?

    • Rob says:

You could get the Amex Rewards Credit Card – free for life and will keep your MR points alive, so no need to transfer them. You can then cancel Gold and save the £140.

Don’t cancel Gold until after Thursday though …

Am I legally allowed to fly from London to
Edinburgh and stay in an Edinburgh hotel right now?
