We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Some CEDR feedback… Today, on the deadline, BA has caved and is repaying us our costs. We were in South Africa in Dec when BA cancelled our return flights – the UK having barred direct flights back from SA. We requested re-routing from BA, since indirect flights to the UK were still available on other airlines, and mentioned our rights. When 2 BA agents refused to reroute us, we went ahead and booked cash tickets with AirFrance.

If it is useful, we did not even give BA 24 hours. Once we had been refused twice, we booked our own return flights that same day. All this happened on the 24th-Dec, with our return flights being on the 28th – and since we needed to get back home for work, were conscious of the intervening public holidays and the fact the remaining flights were likely to be in demand, we were not comfortable waiting before making our own alternative arrangements.

    • Pete M says:

      Glad to hear!

    • Anna says:

Great result – has it taken this long due to CEDR’s backlog of cases? My own claim took about a month in total but that was a couple of years ago.
We need a separate section for successful cases of this kind for people to refer to!

      • Pierre says:

It has taken this long, I think, because that’s the deadline the CEDR gave BA. The CEDR dealt with our case within a few days, and we’ve been waiting ever since for BA. If I recall, the airline might have up to 3 months to respond in normal times (?) but that has been extended by an additional month given the current situation. And I suspect BA simply leave it until the very end…

      • Andrew says:

I’m on second nudge from CEDR to BA to comply with what they agreed to do 7 weeks ago.

    • Aston100 says:

      Well done.
How did BA propose to get you home?

    • Toppcat says:

Great news. Did you claim for any additional costs / statutory interest, and did BA pay up for that as well?

  • Paul says:

Are AMEX supplementary card holders subject to a credit check as part of the application?

    Thanks.

  • BP says:

Back in January, I created a new Marriott account and status matched to Platinum for 90 days. I’d already status matched my primary account and the status ran out so I needed to do this with a new account. I’ve just checked and more than 90 days later I’m still Platinum! Looks like I may have lucked out and have Platinum for a year!

    • Aston100 says:

Who did you status match Mariott against? and was it the same scheme you used to status match your original Marriott account against too?

      • Secret Squirrel says:

I’m hoping it was Spire Elite

      • BP says:

Spire Elite. And yes I used the same IHG account twice. I guessed they wouldn’t keep records and I was correct.

        • Aston100 says:

          This is amazing.
I’d try it but I have literally zero Bonvoy points.
Actually, I wonder how useful Bonvoy Platinum is if making a cash booking?

          • Aston100 says:

To answer my own question, free breakfast and lounge access.
Suppose there’s nothing to lose by trying it.

Guessing you didn’t actually stay any nights to maintain the Platinum status right?

    • BP says:

Post on here and the status resets to Silver. Maybe I should have kept quiet!!!

      • Aston100 says:

No way! really, it’s dropped to silver?

        • meta says:

First rule of the fight club, don’t talk about errors in your favour. I lost count how many errors I benefited from in points and miles terms over the nearly two decades now. And by errors, I mean those that are very personal to you.

I understand there is an urge to share with fellow collectors, but seriously don’t. It’s a question of you win some, you lose some, so it all balances out somehow. But please keep it to yourself and certainly don’t call the company in question to enquire!

          • BP says:

Ohh well. No real loss to me. I just won’t book stays with Marriott, just the same way I stopped booking with Accor when they stopped offering status via Amex.

  • Track says:

Super dumb question of the day,

Can one hold BA Premier AMEX and BA Amex at the same time?

    • AJA says:

No I don’t think this is possible. It’s either BAPP or free BA Amex in your own account. Of course you could have a supplementary free BA Amex on someone else’s account while you have your own BAPP.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

I have 4,800 skyward miles that are due to expire sometime soon. Any ideas on how to transfer them or use them?

My ultimate plan B is to get an A380 model from there online store but would prefer some other use

    • Rob says:

easyJet flight or Heathrow Rewards vouchers (not sure what the minimum is for the latter, and for the former you’d only get a flight worth £20 or so!).

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

I think both of them have a minimum transfer of 6,000

        • TGLoyalty says:

Do you have an MR account?

I sacrificed some points to move points that were going to expire back to Heathrow rewards and cashed there was a double up promo on at the time so May want to do the math

          • Super Secret Stuff says:

Good idea, I do have a stack of MR points but they’re for Australia

          • Hotelier says:

Same situation here! Have some miles about to expire (from before I even collected points). Thought oh great I just transfer some MR over …then realise I have no MR account at the moment as taking 24 months break… I imagine I can’t transfer MR from OH’s Amex account to my Emirates?

  • Mighty Hunter says:

Both my and wife’s BAPP Amex cards not going through at BA today. Trying to book two flights. Online chat with Amex says no problem their end. Anyone else with this issue?

  • Anna says:

Yay, just entered another country after 16 months! Never been so happy to use Gretna Green services 😃

    • Memesweeper says:

Greetings from north o’the border… its great here! although I’ll be back in England tonight…

  • Hotelier says:

Still able to add two more supplementary to my Business Plat to get the 5k bonus. Can I add a Gold card for myself and the other person that has the supplementary platinum and have this count? Or needs to be a new person altogether?

    • Amo says:

I’ve a similar question, I could add my wife but only the two of us live together so I don’t have anyone else I could add. Any creative suggestions of how I can maximise the supplemental card bonus as it’s for up to 5 cards.

      • Connor says:

You can get supplementary cards for yourself. They actually come in handy for me, so the 5000 points ate a good bonus.

        • Hotelier says:

I got the idea from some comments in the here this week about not wanting to show off the platinum card and having a supplementary gold card on same account, just want to make sure if I do, those cards still qualify for the bonus. @Connor thanks for that
