We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hey folks – has anyone done a Marriott BRG claim recently, or even better, have a list of OTAs that are used successfully as a comparison? It seems that Marriott has added Trip.com to a list of excluded sites so you can’t claim against their rates anymore (along with some others)

    • kitten says:

Do Marriott publish their list of companies excluded from their price equalisation guarantee anywhere?

It strikes me all such lists would be a good place to start looking for a cheap hotel then.

    • r* says:

Take it to twitter. Ive always had brg rejected, usually because the cancellation time is like 7pm rather than midnight or some such nonsense and often its then been accepted after complaining on twitter.

    • Aso40 says:

I just had a successful claim using Crystal Travel as the reference. I though they would find a reason to reject as the 25% saving was about £1200.

Hilton rejected a claim against the same website with the nonsense reason that payment is to the website instead of the hotel, even with the same cancellation terms. That rule would exclude most OTAs…

  • A270 says:

Aer Lingus is a Etihad partner so is it possible to book an Aer Lingus flight to USA from Etihad’s website? I want to use my Etihad credit so its not a miles redemption. If not, is there any way to use the credit to travel to USA?

    • Memesweeper says:

Codeshares are often only bookable with a connection or return flight with the marketing airline.

  • Andrew says:

A decent offer from Hyatt on my Platinum – spend £250, get £100 back. At a selection of hotels in Europe including the U.K. Valid on checkout spend only, not on prepaid rates until end of August. Hopefully the other major chains will follow!

    • Ste Cox says:

Same for me. I am hoping for a Hilton offer as I have a few stays booked.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Got it on my gold and ARCC and the supplementary cards as well.
Anyone managed to save the offer from Leading hotels of the world? I get an error message.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      It will work on prepaid.

      • Andrew says:

That’s good if that’s the case. I wonder why it explicitly says otherwise.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Because all Amex T&Cs have nonsense in them

it must be charged to the card before the offer ends and prepaid rates in the future don’t always get charged until closer to the stay date. However, you can just contact the hotel to make that happen.

    • Andrew says:

      On my BA Blue.

      Hopefully it’ll drive others.

      • meta says:

Only on my BAPP. I also have Leading Hotels of the World spend £350 get £100 back, but for some reason it’s throwing error when I try to save it. Will try again later.

    • Mouse says:

Would it be cumulative or does it need £250 in one go. I can’t tell from the Ts & Cs

    • mradey says:

Same offer on my Centurion. Note: Limited to first 40,000.

      • Mike says:

Wow there are more than 40,000 Centurion cards – I never knew that. I am always super deferential to Centurion card holders due to their wealth / status in society

    • Harry T says:

Yep, got this on both our gold credit cards and supps.

    • Jimmy says:

Have got 4 nights in Hotel Martinez Cannes in August already booked on a pre-paid rate. I guess when we’re there we can try to put the restaurant spend through the card machine at the front desk?

      • YC says:

Charge it to your room to keep things simple? Use your desired card on checkout. Also if your prepaid has not been charged yet, you could try calling up and changing your payment card

    • Hotelier says:

Hmm thoughts on this working for bars / restaurant spend without front desk involvement ? Been a couple times to the new bar at Great Scotland Yard Hotel and pretty sure they all posted as Hyatt?

    • Alan says:

No sign of it on my Plat, bit annoying as I have a June Hyatt stay booked.

  • Andrew says:

4x nectar points on eBay on £15+ spend. As usual with these promotions, it is just a total of 4x points NOT 5x as the wording suggests. Activate in the nectar app or on eBay to use the promotion.

    • Red Flyer says:

      🥱

    • Benilyn says:

      Decent thanks

      • Pete says:

Also 80% off variable eBay selling fees this weekend. Hope this doesn’t mean the £1 selling fees are gone!

        • Andrew says:

I was wondering if the £1 fees would survive now that PayPal fees are rolled into that so it really is only £1 to pay on even a large sale.

          • Pete says:

*cough* you mean *cough* some people would abuse that?!

          • Andrew says:

Also seems targeted as nothing on my account.

          • Yorkie Aid says:

I hope the max £1 FV fee comes back, otherwise any sale over £27.56 is going to cost more than a £1 even with 80% off! Let’s hope far fewer people opt in to this offer.

  • C F Frost says:

Q: If I do an Amex referral to somebody but then (as is often the way) they dawdle and think about it, but in the meantime I cancel the card from which I referred in the first place, do I forfeit my bonus – and if so, do the Sussex seagulls look kindly on matters in a later phone call?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yes you’ve forfeited the bonus and no they won’t apply retrospectively

  • TGLoyalty says:

Vaccines open to all over 40’s now so the 40/41 year olds can book if they wish.

  • Terry says:

I have 2 questions on Amex supplementary cards, hoping someone can help:

    1. Do credit agencies create a financial link between the primary and supplementary cardholder for Amex? I have seen this happen for some card issuers, not sure if Amex triggers it.
    2. Someone had mentioned that you can get an additional supplementary card in your own name. Is this still possible and does it trigger the supplementary card bonus?

    • DJ says:

      1. It should not create a financial link for credit card supp holders, since you’re still the person for any payments. It will only ever create a financial link if you were in a joint account product.

      2. Used to be able to, not sure if it’s still a thing anymore

    • mark2 says:

You can get an additional card (relationship – other). The extra points come with the first supplementary of whichever type.

  • Lee says:

For whoever bought Tesco pet insurance a couple of months ago, club points just credited today even before third payment.
