The HfP chat thread – Thursday 29th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

It’s like we’ve never been away.
Spent a leisure night at the Kimpton Blythswood (Glasgow) last night using the 40k point incentive from taking out IC Amb last December. Had to be used by tomorrow. Superb hotel and great staff, with some restrictions to do with Covid and Scottish Govt laws/rulings. Still, welcome drink in room and restaurant being open helped.
    Spa & pool open too.
They had 50%+ occupancy last night and are full over the weekend.

Hi all, in the north west this evening. Plans changed and looked on the government website for valid reasons to stay in a hotel. Booked a hotel in the midlands to help with childcare for tomorrow (my brother and his wife have an infant all the other family is in Yorkshire or Surrey.
Anyway I booked an IHG property, they called me and explained that they are only accepting keyworkers but the hotel down the road (holiday inn express) will accept you no problem as you are looking after an infant and that is a valid reason.
After booking that hotel, the lady said she couldn’t understand why the other hotel said that and they cannot accept me. I asked her to speak to her manager again but she said there was no point.
I explained that I could have quite clearly made things up (my partner used the nhs email to book it) but I was been genuine and I was told this was fine. She didn’t budge and said it quite clearly states on the government website “only keyworkers”. I know rules are in place but sometimes would it not be best to use common sense as I now have a 5 hour drive as I agreed to something which I didn’t believe would be that much of an issue.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Why? Even if they don’t want you, there are more hotels in the midlands than just two….

    • Anna says:

Confused now – why don’t you just stay at the HIE? It certainly doesn’t say on any government website that only keyworkers are allowed to stay in hotels, but each property is free to accept who it wants.
Re IHG and the Midlands though, I know the Voco in Solihull (which is very nice and outstanding value) was accepting guests for other reasons such as respite breaks for carers, although this may have changed recently.

There was an article a while ago on a credit card sign up strategy to maximise bonuses but I can’t find it. Can someone either point me in the direction or advise for someone starting from scratch?
    Thanks

“Ryanair has been told to compensate customers who lost out when flights were cancelled because of strikes.

“The High Court said the thousands of people affected by cancellations or delays during strike action by pilots and cabin crew in 2018 should be compensated.

“Ryanair had claimed that “extraordinary circumstances” applied, so it did not have to pay.

“But the Civil Aviation Authority took legal action over Ryanair’s refusal.”

Good news for consumers and as I understand it this is the High Court (and assuming it’s not reversed on possible appeals to the Court of Appeal or the Supreme Court) the ruling will be set precedent and apply to other airlines as well.

  • Saiz says:

Thanks. Sorry Genghis, I didn’t fully understand the last bit. So it’s okay to withdraw up to £1k? I won’t be doing it regularly but do need about £5k so thought I’d use this route.

    • Harley says:

1k is fine to take out in a day. Although worth doing it in smaller chunks i.e 2x£500, as i had the atm crash on me when more than 500. Also depends on underlying card, i only use my tesco debit

    • Genghis says:

Yes. But do too much and you’ll get shut down.

  • Hotelier says:

Just triggered the £150 back for spending £1k at once in the Business Plat. £150 credit already posted, does this deduct from the £10k spend?
Also, have exchange some MR points on the 0.9p offer which also show as credit, am I right in assuming this counts as a payment and will not deduct from the £10k spend.

  • Alan says:

Does anyone know why TAP is not status matching Virgin Gold.

  • James says:

Can anyone send me their referral link for Mr Porter? I believe we’d both get 10% off. Looking to make an order right now.
