We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have LHR-DXB-LHR on BA booked using Avios with both flights marked as cancelled. I was due to travel this weekend. The new dates in the Autumn I want to move these flights to are not set in stone yet, so I don’t want t make the date change for a few more weeks.

Is there any danger that BA will auto-cancel the booking and credit the Avios? (Flights were booked in 2021, so I am nowhere near the ticket validity deadline.)

When I called BA about a previous similar situation a few months ago, the agent told me that I had to make a decision before the first cancelled outbound flight, but I am not sure from the comments here that that’s correct.

    • Lev441 says:

I have a similar question to above (not cancelled yet, but suspect it will). Would flights be able to be moved to any date (currently off peak Avios booking) or would it only be able to moved to another off peak date.

      Sorry for hijacking your question!

      • Polly says:

Lev, if BA cancel, flights can be moved to any date, does not have to be avios availability. So hold your nerve. They do try to make you stay within 1 year of the original booking date tho, but some HUACA, to get later changed dates… read pages and pages about this last few weeks.
LL has done so much on this topic….

    • Flyoff says:

BA won’t refund until you ask even after the date of travel. I have sued this to keep options open and have booked months later once I knew when I wanted to travel.

  • Claire says:

Can I check. If you have not had your own american express card for over 2 years you qualify for both bonus points on bapp and platinum. Would it matter which way round you applied. Want to refer husband for bapp from my bapp then cancel mine but might want to do platinum referral later in the year. Thanks

    • TGLoyalty says:

No it doesn’t matter which way round.

But if you haven’t had either you would be eligible for Nectar/Bonvoy then BAPP/Platinum getting 3 sign up bonuses

      • Claire says:

Thanks. I realise I will miss out on nectar or bonvoy but really want one if us to still have a bapp and thought I might as well take advantage of the enhanced bonuses. My bapp may well be getting refunds from cancelled flights for this summer which I would prefer not to lead to neg balance of avios. Assume if refund occurs after I cancel, the refund from ba can be done to a bank account if card is cancelled. Anyone had any issues on refunds on cancelled cards?

        • Genghis says:

Refund goes back onto cancelled Amex which you then get sent to bank account or transferred to another Amex to reduce balance.

        • TGLoyalty says:

For what it’s worth. Why do one of you need a BAPP? You can pay for the taxes on a 2-4-1 booking on any Amex in anyone’s name.

It would make more sense to do Nectar and Platinum for now. As the bonus is bigger on Platinum (15k vs 5k boost plus you get 2k more for first supp) he might even be able to refer you for a nectar for 24k points before May 12th.

          • Claire says:

Thanks. I have only just cancelled my nectar. I’ve been the one with the amex for last 2 years. My plan is to upgrade green to platinum when I think I can get use from it then refer husband for amex platinum as he will then get bonus.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Fyi upgrade to platinum is now a once in a lifetime thing so if you’ve done it before you won’t get the 20k

    • Polly says:

Best to refer for him 1st for platinum now with the bigger bonus, and have him refer you back for bonvoy or nectar something…and refer him for BAPP also from yours before you cancel. He shouldn’t refer himself tho.

  • Jason says:

Looks like Amex have changed there policy on number of cards you can hold…I have always been able to hold 4 personal cards no problem. This looks to have been cut to 3 personal and 1 business. If you have suddenly stated to get decline that might be why.

    • G says:

I hold 4 personal cards, with the last successful application being in Feb so it must be a very recent change

    • Youllnever says:

Do they differentiate between credit and charge cards for the limit or does it not matter?

      • TGLoyalty says:

I hold 2 charge and 2 credit (last credit was a couple weeks ago)

I thought it was 2 charge and 3 credit but YMMV

  • JimmyJimmy says:

EasyJet now offering free changes up to 2 hrs before flight. Not sure if it includes existing bookings or just new.
    J

    • bill says:

Applies to existing reservations made prior to the announcement

    • Anna says:

However, if you’ve paid for seat plus hand luggage, they won’t guarantee you will get this in the new booking, and they won’t refund you either. So a bit rubbish really, given that these can double the cost of the flight.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Any bank accounts with rewards or benefits for simply accumulating savings? Want to open an account for emergency savings with no direct debits. Not keen on interest.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Well if interest is too boring then the reward for holding Premium Bonds is sort of like being given lottery tickets 😀

    • Lady London says:

They’re called current accounts one of which is Barclays Premier’-)

  • Jonathan says:

Anyone tried to convert Avios to Nectar online recently?
Keep getting the error “We are sorry, Avios to Nectar conversion isn’t currently available online.” on the BA website.
Looks like Nectar to Avios is still working.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It hasn’t worked for a month. Have to call to do it.

      • Andrew says:

Try over two months! It was supposed to be fixed by the end middle of March, still nothing. But the call to convert is reasonably painless – dedicated number no queue, quick process, just a few days wait to get them credited.

        • TGLoyalty says:

As long as nectar to Avios work fine then the other way could be down for a year as no use to me 🙂

  • Saiz says:

My curve metal is showing daily cash withdrawl limit of £1000. Is that right and the same for everyone? I thought the limit was £200.

    • Genghis says:

Same. But try withdrawing £1k cash a day for a month. Been there when limits were much lower…
