Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Is there any duty of care requirement (primarily is the airline supposed to pay for hotel costs) if the airline is air india and the cancelled flight is the return leg of the booking, but is bom-lhr?

eu261 doesnt apply as its a non-eu carrier inbound to uk even tho the tickets outbound flight originated from the uk?

friend just had their air india flight cancelled and are being told they cant be booked on to a new flight for a month!

    • Steve says:

No, the best they’ll get is a partial refund of the return portion of the ticket (which will be less than 50% as taxes outbound are higher). Your friend will need to weigh up if an alternate flight is affordable. Travel Insurance?

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Isn’t it more due to India being added to red list? Doubt your friend can get on a flight (any airline) to UK for a month or even more.

      • KP says:

I think flights are running with UK citizens and residents. Plus theyll have passengers ex-LHR

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I thought eu 261 still applied as its written into uk law now and affects any passengers that takeoff or land in the UK

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Meaning they have a right to be rerouted unless they accept a refund

        • Tiff says:

No. It applies in the following cases:
          If your flight is within the EU and is operated either by an EU or a non-EU airline;
          If your flight arrives in the EU from outside the EU and is operated by an EU airline;
          If your flight departs from the EU to a non-EU country operated by an EU or a non-EU airline;
but not if your flight arrives in the EU from outside the EU and is operated by a non-EU airline.

I think this is new…? Although can’t see it on my card BAPP yet! Arrived by email.

“From 15 March to 15 June 2021, you can collect 2 bonus Avios for every £1 you spend on your British Airways American Express® Premium Plus Card, up to a maximum of 4,000 bonus Avios. This offer is only available for the first 80,000 Cardmembers who save it to their Card.

Don’t forget, the bonus Avios are on top of the usual 1.5 Avios you get with your Card. Boost your Avios balance now, to go further on that dream adventure later.”

    • swifty says:

yes i’ve just received that on my blue, much less attractive offer tho £2 for 1 point

    • Michael says:

Seen this but can’t see where you save it to your card? tried link in email, amex app and executive club too.. any help appreciated as I have a few big spends to make in the next few days…

      • C says:

Same issue for me – email received but no ability to save it on website or app.

    • Joe says:

Isn’t it the same offer we have already seen (and used?!)

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Mrs Trotter and I have had this on our BAPPs for a while – as the reference to a 15 March start date implies – but I did also receive this email today which seems to be a reminder to register? Hopefully if will pop up in your offers feed if you’ve been targeted for the email but I also wouldn’t put it past Amex’s IT to be sending out emails about offers where the subscription cap (first 80k members) has already been reached…

      • Pete M says:

I definitely had something similar earlier in the year and collected a lot of Avios by paying most of my Council Tax off, but seem to remember it ended at the end of March or early April? So not sure if this is new or an extension? Would see off to advertise it to me if I couldn’t sign up to it again, but, as you say Guernsey Globetrotter, anything is possible with Amex, isn’t it!

        • Peter K says:

I had this appear middle of march so I imagine it’s the old offer just being sent out my email.

        • MattB says:

My wife saved the previous similar offer on her BAPP which expired about a week ago. She just received this email too but it isn’t clear if this is separate as we probably hit the cap is already.

Looking in the app it says she has 0 saved offers but when you click it anyway this offer is actually in there with the revised end date. Definitely something weird going on.

    • Zoe says:

I also got the email but no offer in Amex app, also BAPP card. I thought I had just had this offer and got a lot of bonus points so confused to see it again!

      • Ron says:

In the Amex App, under My Offer, it says expires on 23/4, but when you click into it, it says expires on 15/6 and the T&Cs shows 15/6 expiry date too. But I can’t see any bonus Avios posted after 23/4.

    • Alex wentford says:

This is the same offer that was mentioned on here a while ago. I had to check in my saved offers to find it.

      • Pete M says:

Just spoke to Amex, not being able to add it “is a known issue,” if it’s not appearing you need to ask them to add it manually… You need a “lead rep” to do it as regular agents can’t do it.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Strange ‘10000 bonus avios’ message and 10k MR points credited in Gold card. Spent only 12.5k so far and 6 months to go for anniversary.

    • TGLoyalty says:

has it posted against/after a large transaction? How much was it?

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Paid council tax 2.3k through PayPal that settled on same day. But don’t remember any offers linked to PayPal or a large spend.

      • Jay says:

@TG, same message of ‘‘10,000 bonus avios’ to my BAPP from two days ago (totally unexpected). The avios were credited on the same day I made a single purchase of c£1,800.

    • Rob says:

Mate of mine got this on his BA card yesterday. Odd.

    • Connor says:

Same here on a brand new Biz Platinum card.

    • Joe Dillamore says:

I also had the exact same thing on the free BA card

      • Joe Dillamore says:

Mine posted after a £1.6k transaction through eBay. This transaction also coincided with spending £20k in a year (and I’d already earned a companion voucher and since downgraded), so initially thought it might be that, but apparently not seeing as I’m not the only one

  • swifty says:

Hi All, just took the Business gold amex on the last day of the offer, has anyone had any communication with Amex about the points and spend uplift, as they’ve not mentioned it and i’ve been using the card. I used the link on here to sign up but it was about 9pm and also my application was referred and then a day or two later accepted Thanks

  • mart says:

Slightly off topic but anyone have any advice re investing?
I am looking to start investing – something easy to manage ie I dont need to make the decisions, easy access to money, not looking to make loads but just hopefully beat the dire interest rates and inflation! A small amount initially around 2k and probs £500-£1k a month moving forwards. Thanks in advance.

    • Ryan says:

Consider looking at a good mutual fund (vanguard etc) with the level of risk / type (conservative to aggressive & capital growth vs income) based on how much risk and time you want to be invested for

Cash has a huge risk of being devalued in the long term (inflation) which usually is higher than the risk of the market falling

    • Crafty says:

Did you not even read page 1 of *today’s* comments?

  • Simon says:

Anyone know >>> About to refer player 2 for an Amex Bonvoy. Can i stick my Bonvoy number in the application to get the points when they sweep over? Or do i need to use her number, then sweep them over to my account from hers to make a booking? Thankyou

    • Rob says:

No, Bonvoy account needs to be in the name of the cardholder. Cardholder can then ring Bonvoy and move the points to you.

  • Yuff says:

Update on NHS app conversation from yesterday…..
I contacted my GPA surgery and they have allowed the app full access to my medical records, which they say should take a few days.
Hopefully vaccination record will be showing when it takes effect………

    • Pete M says:

I can see my vaccination now, no detailed records yet though… Imagine making it show a green tick now that others recognise should be relatively easy!

    • Navara says:

I can see my first vaccination now had second one today will check tomorrow for update

    • @mkcol says:

Odd – my NHS app has had access to my medical records since I first installed it.

  • Lee says:

Never bought Avios from BAEC but need a small amount to top up, anyone know how long it will take to credit? Thanks

    • MattB says:

Instant for me a few years back , needed for a redemption and did online whilst on the phone making the booking.
