We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just triggered a random 10,000 Avios bonus on my BA PP with a large purchase – any idea what this is for?

    “DESCRIPTION
    10,000 Bonus Avios

    CATEGORY
    Bonus Earn”

  • AndyGWP says:

got this too… assume so but little info to go off (tho I’ve not properly investigated yet)

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Sainsbury’s seems to have decided that nectar offers don’t work, instead switching to Aldi price match

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

A real shame that but understandable. Probably also linked to there major loss that got announced today

      • Harrier25 says:

I found it hard to get excited about 20 bonus Nectar points for a bag of apples anyway.

My wife refuses to shop at Sainsbury’s as she saves a small fortune by doing the weekly shop at Asda instead.

        • Super Secret Stuff says:

Fair enough, sainsbury is local to me though. Nectar tragetting rewards based on how often you shop there and how you spend, so doesn’t sound like it would give you nice bonuses.

Will be interesting to see how it evolves though

          • Harrier25 says:

Our local Sainsbury’s is actually very much more local than Asda and I do go there but the wife will not have any of it and prefers to drive an extra 10 mins to Asda.

    • Anttelli says:

No extra points offers for me recently but £6 off a £40+ spend for the last 3 weeks, hoping for another one on Friday

      • TGLoyalty says:

£12 off £60 from Tesco for me plus another £8 for the two weeks after that so that’s where I’ll be shopping the next few weeks.

  • Simon says:

Amex IDC • Is anyone else having issues transferring from it to SQ? Three days running I’ve had error messages and I have tried three different browsers. Anyone else having this? Thanks in advance.

  • GERARD CREAMER says:

Hi, looking for some advice. I had booked a BA holiday and paid deposit, outbound flights are still operating but return cancelled and moved four days later. What are my options, they offered a refund, Future Travel Voucher or moving dates. Obviously keeping existing dates would add additional costs in terms of accommodation and moving to later date i.e August, rates will be higher. Any guidance appreciated.

    • ChrisC says:

That’s about it for your options.

Whilst there is no extra charge for moving flights you do have to pay for any extra accommodation costs.

You can call them and discuss options and they will tell you how much extra the accommodation will be with no obligation to accept that.

I did that last week and they were very good in rebooking the flights and telling me what the extra costs would be not only for my original hotel but for an alternative one.

BA holidays staff really are excellent.

      • GERRY says:

How likely is it that Greece will be on Green list by July? I know it’s a waiting game really

    • Lady London says:

wouldn’t have thought you should pay for moving dates. After all not your fault your flights got cancelled. I’d accept to fly later if I had time but wouldn’t be willing to pay the extra nights. Read your t’s and c’s then call and see what they can offer.

No I wouldn’t take a voucher unless it had a chunk higher than I paid. Not just a token amount. And taking a refund just means I wasted my time finding and booking the holiday and lent them my money for free.

So I not knowledgeable about holidays but think about what would work for you and see if they can stretch to it. Your worst case will be as stated in the t’s and c’s but you might be able to do better – keep it nice

      • ChrisC says:

When I called BA hols last week they said they would cover any extra charges for change in dates for the accommodation for a couple of days either side of the original bookings but the trip needed to be the same length as before.

No extra charges or fare difference for the flights. So when I rebooked my trip for a month later the extra for the single night hotel was £5.

The only thing the agent really insisted on was travel had to start (but not be completed) within a year of the original booking. As she could see the date of the original booking she was able to give me the specific date. I doubled checked on that and she was clear that as long as I departed on or before the 11th September (I’d booked on the 12th) there was no issue.

Remember package holidays come with their own T&Cs and regulations which differ from flight only.

  • s879 says:

Booked a BA flight last week. If I want to cancel it outside the 24 hours period, can I opt for the future travel voucher? Are all recent bookings covered by the Book With Confidence policy?

  • Sooz says:

Thanks to those who helped me yesterday (when I was asking about my right to re-routing on a flight to Korea–a route BA no longer fly). I rang BA yesterday, and they claimed that the right to re-routing didn’t apply because the original ticket was booked with Avios, and so again said my only options were to be refunded or to get a voucher. Is it really different for Avios bookings?

    • BS says:

Nope. No different. Don’t take their rubbish.

    • Genghis says:

      No difference

      • Craig says:

This gives the article titles, EU261 was enshrined into British law prior to Brexit. As Genghis said how you paid is irrelevant, stick to your ground.

    • Lady London says:

BA seems to be doing this cr*p not picking up their EU261 legally obliged responsibilities when they cancel routes. What we’ve told you is absolutely correct and repeated daily. They have to provide the flight on someone else’s airline if thet can’t.

They are not allowed to walk away. They have to get you flown either as close as possible to your original flight timing, or at a later date you choose. Your choice. Not theirs. If flying as close as poss to same time means longer wait before flight, more stops or hotel nights they also are responsible for all meals, any hotels, transport to and from hotels at whatever is the going rate where you have to spend extra time.

BA clearly hopes to push you into a refund as this lets them off the hook for providing all the above. You would then probably have to pay more yourself for what they should have provided you. That’s why they love it.

Look back 1-3 weeks this daily thread where it’s discussed almost daily. To save time look for posts by Jonathan and meta and sometimes mine too as well as others. These will tell you what to do. Law basis is EU261 it outranks BA.

Just to be really clear even if you found avios seats at 1/10th the price of normal avios seats or some other sale for public or avios holders or if you got the seats on a 241 voucher they owe you same rights like this as full cash seats. Call UK BA number 08.30am-3.30pm on a weekday this may avoid landing with untrained staff o
in an out of hours call centre.

Dont take a voucher you dont have to, these are harder to use, and if you want to fly make them fly you and dont take a refund that lets them walk away and get away with not providing you your rights.

I got a similar offer on my horizon card last year – 1% back for a month or two – and appeared as a credit on my December account. This was on top of my 0.5% which I got in January. Didn’t get anything this time around though.
