The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 28th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I have an Avios booking made through ba.com for SIN to HND (on JAL) in Oct21.
If I elect to cancel, can this be turned into a FTV for free? Or will it have to be a paid-for cancellation because it’s not a BA flight?
Just trying to explore my options… thanks!

    • Matt says:

You can take an FTV – I’ve done it for JL flights.

      • FFoxSake says:

        Thanks Matt, that’s helpful.
Was it a purely JL flight booking using Avios or a BA codeshare?

  • Magic Mike says:

Quick one – did I read here right that applying for an additional Amex card doesn’t result in a credit check? Currently have Plat and Bonvoy, would apply for ARCC to preserve MR points then may cancel Plat – yes I know I could downgrade by calling Brighton but the Mrs wants a referral bonus… 🙂

I had an offer on airtime rewards for Morrisons, mine stated until 7th April. I did not screen shot it unfortunately . My purchases in April are not tracking and airtime rewards saying offer ended earlier. Did anyone else have 7th April end date & screenshot it? Long shot I know 😂

HelloFresh offer on AMEX: Is it cumulative? For some reason they split the cost and charged me twice. 26.xx and 7.xx.

    • WaynedP says:

Offer was for £29.99 or more, so if your xx denotes 99 then the first charge should trigger the £10 back, even without the split cost.

I received an email from Amex notifying me that I had just used my offer within one minute of the HelloFresh email confirming order was received, and two days later, credit is already showing on my App.

I did note in the T&Cs of the Amex offer that it specified availability at hellofresh dot co dot uk/plans/. I could be over-thinking it, but I took that to mean excluding some of the other introductory offers available if you just land on the hellofresh home page.

Are you sure that you selected one of the meal plans from this sub-page, or did you choose something that might not have been eligible for the offer from the home page ?

      • WaynedP says:

Sorry, misread your £26.xx so ignore my first point.

        • Crafty says:

HelloFresh are notorious for this, leaves a bad taste (ironic).

  • George K says:

Hey folks – I’ve got an Amex Plat travel insurance question. If an open jaw booking has its return leg cancelled because that route is pulled, and the only possible way back is from an airport within the 300 mile limit, would Amex Plat (or indeed BA) pay for what looks like a £400 cab ride (with a toddler in tow)?

    • Jonathan says:

BA are on the hook for reasonable expenses to get you home as per EU261. Generally they will pay up to £50 taxi fare without any quibbles. For £400 they’ll put up a fight so you’d need to demonstrate there isn’t another reasonable, cheaper, option eg. Train or coach.

  • trader363 says:

Got LHR – SIN return booked from 1st June to 10th June (booked in the 50% off sale)

Is my best strategy to wait and see if they cancel? We won’t be flying as there is a quarantine requirement

    • Magic Mike says:

Always best to wait and see if they cancel. You get more options under EC261 with a cancelled flight (albeit you may need to go into battle with the airline, you don’t say which, I presume BA), rather than you cancelling and getting a FTV.

Check flightaware.com or similar to see if the flight has been going recently.

    • Lady London says:

      Yes
You dont have to rebook by the date of the original flight either

BA highly likely to be doing “who blinks first” so hold out.

Rob gave iag.cargo.com as a place to check in case flight could still be running for cargo reasons.

    • Sam G says:

The 4 weekly June schedule as it stands is likely to operate – it’s what BA have been operating pretty much throughout (expect recently when UK arrivals weren’t allowed in most cases, but that is now resolved)

There isn’t a flight on the 10th though

    • trader363 says:

      Thanks all!

Just checked and the dates are actually 30th May to 14th June (and yes BA using a 241). It’s showing that the 30th May leg is cancelled – but I haven’t received an email.

Time to give them a call and ask for my options 🙂

      • trader363 says:

Outbound is cancelled. As expected, they will honour the 50% off avios booking if I change the dates, but not if rerouting is required.

Will wait until the green list comes out and book something last minute.

        Thanks again all!

        • Lady London says:

Legally they have to honour the 50% avios booking even if rerouting was required on another carrier.

If they cancel they can’t charge you any more, at all, on themselves or another carrier. Not even if they had to reroute you on Concorde via Australia.
          FACT.

  • N says:

    Amex Bus Plat SUB.

Applied before the deadline for the 100k, but was approved after the deadline.

Have spent £5900ish and have received a bonus of 40k.

    Does this mean I won’t get 100k at £10k?

    • Rob says:

Yes, I think so. Time to complain.

      • N says:

Thought so. I’ll wait to hit the £10k to see if dodgy IT gives me 100k.

If not, will get a complaint together.

  • Belle says:

Anyone have a number to contact Curve support?
    Thank you
