The HfP chat thread – Monday 26th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Credit where credit due, BA cancelled my flights to Dubai in June , three times in the last two months, 2-4-1 amex in F. No availability according to website for reward flight September!! called Saturday got through in less a minute, and re-booked and sorted in less than five minutes with the flights I requested. Had to post as it’s the easiest and most efficient BA have ever been when I’ve tried to re-book with them. Melissa the agent was a star.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You don’t need reward availability to rebook a cancelled flight.

    Plat charge card data point:

    Took card out in October.
Received 35k MR after calling at the end of December and asking for retention.
Called again today to finally cancel, but to my surprise got given another 35k MR for keeping the card. Did not mention retention at all just said I’d like to cancel. MR points already posted.

Been a good investment with all the Waitrose credits, Marriott credit and 70k retention bonus

    • KBuffett says:

Did you speak UK or Philippines?

    • Sandgrounder says:

I called today and asked about a Plat retention bonus, they said to call back in a couple of weeks when it will be over 1 year since my last bonus. Spoke to Phils first and then got passed to Brighton.

  • Doc says:

Does adding a supplementary card to Amex Gold credit card instigate a credit check?
I think the 3000 MR points are still offered for first supplementary card.
Better half on 24 month holiday from Amex products and so could do with supp card for her but don’t want a credit check for mortgage application reasons.

    Might work for others

  • YC says:

What do you think the chances of amex plat concierge finding me a table for 6 for Friday night in London? 😀

    • YC says:

Answer is no. But one benefit of amex plat, which rarely gets mentioned, is their global dining collection (FHR for restaurants). They are for generally high end restaurants and u get some freebies thrown in (glass of champagne, etc). However, this programme is also currently paused… But when/if it does return, one to remember

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

In my experience, those freebies were often on OpenTable/Bookatable too

    • KBuffett says:

The Concierge is pretty much useless in my experience

    • Anna says:

You’re in the wrong city. Kimpton concierge has found us a table for Sunday lunch in Edinburgh!

      • Pete M says:

But they also have indoors to play with? Or are you boozing? 🙂

      • Peggerz says:

Where did he book you in Anna?

        • Anna says:

Badger & Co. Looks lovely. Indoors but boozing later! Apparently the Kimpton social hour drinks are delivered to one’s room in these times lol.

          • Peggerz says:

That’s the birthplace of Wind in the Willows writer Kenneth Grahame, therefore Badger & Co.
            Enjoy it.

  • Fk says:

For the amex gold business card, I’ve hit the spend and only see 30k bonus points, not 50k, has this happened to anyone else too?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

Give it a few days, Amex bonuses often come in two parts when a higher offer is available.

  • Connor says:

Anyone know if Sainsburys Bank charge cash advance fees or interest for 6012 transactions?

    • Blenz101 says:

Assuming you mean on their credit card product rather than paying into any of the other products they offer then they will charge.

“Finance payments or gambling transactions” at 3% with no interest free period.

      • Connor says:

Yup, their credit card. I’m just wondering if anyone can confirm they charge for 6012 transactions as obviously most of the credit card providers say they charge cash advance fees for financial payments but not all do for 6012 transactions.

  • Secret Squirrel says:

Amex Plat bonus, if you hit your required spend & transfer the bonus MR’s out then you get a refund that takes you below your spend requirements, do they minus your account the bonus MR’s until you hit the required spend again?
