The HfP chat thread – Sunday 25th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Not cumulative. Need to spend £40 in a single transaction. My 3rd box went through today which triggered the offer. First 2 purchases were £39.99 & £20 & didn’t trigger.

  • Charlieface says:

You could always appeal on that basis, send a letter to head office. Make sure to do that within 30 days.

  • Reney says:

Hi I am trying to add a supplementary Amex onto my online services. It won’t let me and keep asking me to set up a new account. Tried online chat who were useless. I have previously called Amex to get this changed made, can I check if anyone had this problem recently and did you resolve the problem?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Usually waiting a few days does the trick.

Sometimes it’s just not possible and a new account is the only route.

    • Genghis says:

Have you tried adding during the week?

    • Harrier25 says:

You can’t add supplementary cards to existing accounts. You’ll need to open a new account for it. I know this from experience.

      • babyg_wc says:

@harrier25, that maybe your experience but it’s factually incorrect, I’ve added sup cards to existing amex accounts.

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Agree.

I have both my main card and the AC supp on a single account.

          • Harrier25 says:

Well there you go then. I’ve been able to add the main account cards on to one account but not supplementary cards. I even phoned Amex who told me that it couldn’t be done. I was attempting to add my wife’s ARCC supplementary card to her main Gold card account.

          • Genghis says:

I have mains, ACs and supps on one acct.

          • Harrier25 says:

Did you just add them via add a card in Card Management as usual?

Clearly Amex Customer Advisers are about as much use as the useless staff at Curve!

          • Genghis says:

Normally add them as part of the card activation process.

        • Anna says:

+1. My Amex account currently has my own gold card, a cancelled BAPP plus my supp on OH’s BAPP attached to it at the moment.

    • Reney says:

Thanks all, I know I can add them, I’ve had main and sup on my own account. But couldn’t get it to work this time. Have insist that it can be done, and amex has filed an IT request for me.

Genghis, it never occurred to me that being a weekend mattered.

      • Matt says:

Sometimes I’m unable to add new cards to my account (or to my wife’s account). Doesn’t seem to be a pattern whether it’s a supp or main card. I tried contacting Amex the first few times, but they seemed mostly clueless. Basically if you wait a few days it will work fine, without further intervention.

  • Steve says:

Can I use Amex, via paypal, to pay into a bank account rather than send to an email address?

About to ask my local mechanic if he’ll take PayPal payment (I know he doesn’t take Amex directly) as I have an expensive service coming up, but wondering if I can skip the hassle and send from Amex, through PayPal, to his bank?

Probably not as that’d be ripe for MS I’m sure, but this is more than genuine. I guess that’s what Billhop was invented for.

    • Paul says:

The merchant would need to pay fees to Paypal for receiving the payment (3.5% if you use Amex). So your mechanic is perhaps unlikely to agree, at least not without passing the fee back to you, in which case just save yourself the hassle and use Billhop as you say.

(It would be free if you lie to Paypal that this transaction is to ‘friends and family’ but in that case you can’t claim that your actions are ‘more than genuine’ and Paypal are known to come down hard on people abusing their system).

      • Dr C says:

Are you sure it’s free? I thought you pay the fee upfront for payments to friends and family coming from credit cards

      • Steve says:

Ah yes, it was the free when friends and family route I was thinking of, but you’re right that’s not genuine. Ok, better suck it up and accept this is not one for the Amex

  • rams1981 says:

Morrisons – my Airtime was due today and not available. Has anyone had theirs from recent promo? Likewise virgin miles tracked but still not live. Whereas in comparison 3 x PAW available already.

    • Ryan says:

Had my 7% x £3k posted this week

I’ve hit my £100 a month redemption limit already (which I didn’t know existed)!

      • rams1981 says:

I assume your excess can just be kept and used the following month?

        • Connor says:

Yup, or if you have another phone on your bill you can send to that number as well.

        • Ryan says:

I’ve phoned up Three before and asked for a refund for an ‘overpayment’. Was around £170 and they paid it straight away

    • Connor says:

It takes until the actual time on the day they appeared until you can redeem them. Try waiting till the end of the day and check again.

    • rams1981 says:

Update – £230 now payable. Amazing

    • Joe says:

I seem to only be able to redeem £10 at a time – is that normal?!

  • Youllnever says:

Does anyone know if purchasing Harrods gift card instore triggers the Amex Harrods offer please? Thanks 🙂

  • Genghis says:

I know, awful isn’t it? Should be “fewer than”.

Anyway, strictly speaking, fewer than 4 given the discrete nature of cards is 3? Otherwise they’d say “four cards or fewer”?

Try appealing but Amex under no obligation to provide cards.

  • George K says:

I stupidly waited to add a supp cardmember to my Harrods amex, and now the ‘offer’ has disappeared, and the card won’t even come up on the ‘add someone to your account’. Having said that, when the offer did appear – for an extra 1000 points – clicking on it would take me to a broken link, so who knows what’s up.
