The HfP chat thread – Sunday 25th April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

If its been 26 months since someone has had a plat amex/bapp/gold amex but 22 months since theyve had an spg/bonvoy –
1 are they eligible for bapp and plat amex bonus now?
2 would taking the bapp or plat amex mean they couldnt get the bonvoy bonus in a couple of months?
3 do you have to take the bapp and plat in a specific order or can either be taken first?

My wife has had to travel up and down to Glasgow from LHR for a few months to help look after her mum. We decided early on to bite the bullet and pay the extra J class for safety, and by crossover booking flights outbound/inbound so each stay was over a weekend, we got some very decent prices. As a result (plus a couple of holidays in last year), she’s a silver card holder with a membership year date of 8th May and, I think due to an earlier BA extension, a card expiry date of 30 June 2023.
On return tomorrow she’ll be in the happy position of 1135 tier points, so gold card awaits.
Since the silver card has been extended to June 2023, will the gold status also expire then, with a soft landing to silver until June 2024?

    It’s not cumulative.
It may not be scientific, indeed might be nonsense, but the T&Cs state ‘valid on an ELIGIBLE transaction of £40 or over’ (or similar wording.
Other Amex offers just state ‘valid on a transaction of £40 or over’.
I will keep an eye on the wording of future offers I use to see if this pattern continues.

Question on Future Travel Vouchers- if I convert an existing Avios booking to a FTV, can I subsequently cancel and get a full refund minus £35pp?

    • AJA says:

You can only get Avios back if BA cancels. If you book a flight with a FTV that you then cancel you get it as another FTV

  • Andre says:

I’ve downgraded my platinum to gold charge card couple of months ago and expecting a refund for something paid for with platinum. Will it still reach me or do i have to let a merchant know about it?

  • Kevin D says:

    What is Platinum Charge AC?

  • C says:

    1. Call in only
    2. Same as the UK Plat Amex
    3. Rarely – no Amex offers. There were a few double points offers in 2020, and I think another special offer.
    4. As Amex Plat insurance generally. The Ts&Cs are somewhat better than the UK Plat, but sometimes need to remind customer service of that.
