easyJet adds flights from London Gatwick to Newquay

Newquay Airport is at serious risk of being overrun this Summer, given the number of airlines annoucing new routes.

Aer Lingus, via its Stobart Air franchise, was the first up this week, announcing flights from Belfast City. This was previously a route served by Flybe. There will be three flights per week starting on 28th June, using 72-seater ATR72-600 aircraft.

easyJet is planning to launch Gatwick to Newquay services on 8th June, operating to 30th October.

There will be three flights per week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. You may be able to mix and match with the British Airways service from Heathrow, which restarts on 1st July.

The position for Winter 2021 is unclear. Cornwall Council had tendered for an airline to operate year-round services to a London airport under a ‘PSO’ contract. This would offer financial guarantees if passenger numbers were weak, in return for guaranteed flights. Cornwall Council recently rejected all tenders for the PSO contract, but has said that it may begin a new process in the Autumn.

Newquay doesn’t look like it needs any Government support this Summer. The list of cities with a Newquay connection now includes (E&OE) London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Belfast, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Faro, Alicante, Manchester, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Isles of Scilly, Teesside, Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin, Cork, Dusseldorf, Jersey, Guernsey and Zurich.

So I live in an amber area, visit a green area for child care on a daily basis, but hypothetically end up visiting a red area before a flight…..this is where it doesn’t make sense based on figures. So me and my wife have both had 1st jab both sets of parents 2 jabs. Evidence and uploading of a jab might be the way to go rather than tarnish a whole area as a blanket risk

Why the heck would you fly from LGW to Newquay? Isn’t the train like 4 hours? Once you add in all the airport faff you’ve basically broken even in terms of time

  Partially depends on where you want to go in Cornwall. But from SW London flying would be quicker by a good 2-3 hours to Newquay. And depending on who was coming with / luggage would be more convenient.

  Took me less than an hour by train to Gatwick, a 60 minute wait and a 45 min flight and a 15 minute walk to St Mawgan all for about £60 all in.
  
  Compare that to taking a train directly would have been over 7 hours to Newquay station and over £100 in costs.

I am mildly amused to see that the Jersey list of green UK local auhorities still includes the now non-existent South Northamptonshire, and presumably the other old local authorities now split between West Northamptonshire and North Northamptonshire.

  In fairness the the Northamptonshire council merger took effect 23 days ago. When Jersey were drawing up the list they were probably using data older than that, and it’s possible reporting here hasn’t changed/won’t change for consistency sake anyway.

        @MD if you’re actually interested in the numbers, this link will show you that Westminster is currently on 32 per 100k (7 day basis) – well above Jersey’s green rate.
