Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • George says:

I’m closing an Amex account (I want to start the 24 months clock) so have transferred out a few thousand MR points to BAEC. I’m left with 397 points. Is my best option to transfer them to Nectar?

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Radisson Rewards has no minimum transfer. Probably better value if you’re already collecting them.

      • George says:

I don’t really have use for hotel points at the moment. Avios would be useful but minimum transfer is 500 points and at least I know if I can’t use the Avios then I’ll get 0.8p value from transferring to Nectar.
So I’m stuck with 397 MR right now.

  • Andrew says:

    Email from Barclaycard:-

“Whether it’s a local trip or an adventure abroad, get £25 off flights worth £200 or more on Opodo when you pay with your Barclaycard. To take advantage of this offer, book by 23 May 2021 and enter BARC25 at the checkout.”

There is a click through link, not sure if it requires you to click through on a targetted link for validity.

    • John says:

I’d have to be saving a *lot* more that £25 for the risk and hassle of booking via Opodo, especially if there’s a chance I’ll to contact them to deal with COVID-related changes, cancellations, etc…

      • Pete says:

Opodo have been a nightmare during Covid – never again!

        • Sam G says:

+2 , they totally fell apart , had to push my airline hard to touch the booking instead (or my family would have been stranded in Thailand!)

Wouldn’t be booking any flights with anyone except the airline currently, just not worth the hassle

      • kitten says:

        +1 don’t. Just don’t.

  • PK says:

I cancelled my Amex Gold 2 years ago, and have BAPP as my only Amex at the moment. Will I qualify for Platinum sign-up bonus if I apply?

    • Harry T says:

      Yes

    • Anna says:

Yes, my OH just did this, spurred on by the current 50k bonus offer. Approved immediately even though it was a Saturday and I had my 12k referral points from gold within 24 hours. Card arrived in 3 working days.

    • Rob says:

      Yes

    • PK says:

Thanks everyone. Just wondering whether I will qualify for a Gold sign-up bonus too, because I still can’t get myself to justify the fee for Plat considering the reduced travel.

      • Anna says:

You would qualify if you haven’t had any MR card for 2 years. Gold is a better option if you want to hang on to the card for a bit longer and not pay a fee.

      • Steve says:

You will NOT qualify for the gold sign up bonus, as you currently have a personal Amex card.

        • PK says:

But Anna just said I will qualify for Gold bonus. Which one is it? I am befuddled!

@Rob Can you confirm please. Thanks.

          • Anna says:

Apologies, Steve is correct – you could get the gold fee free for the first year and get 10k bonus points for £15k spend, plus 3k for adding a supp. You can do quite well out of this over 12 months.

          • Rob says:

            Only Platinum

          • Peter K says:

No bonus on the gold card as you have the BAPP (ie another personal Amex). The platinum only looks at if you have had a person *MR* earning card in the past 24 months (so green, gold, platinum, ARCC), so it sounds like you will be okay to get the bonus.

  • BuildBackBetter says:

Has anyone received the bonus MR points on Sainsbury’s spending that includes a gift card?

    • The uncivil servant says:

No but following offers; Loose Broccoli 40Points, Easy Peelers 90 Points, 4 pint Milk 60 Points, Easy access Lube 20 points, Chopped Tomatoes 70 Points, Taste the Difference fish Pie 80 Points, Butt plugs 50 Points, Back bacon 40 Points, 400g strawberries 120 points, Bananas 20 points.

  • Doug says:

I’m travelling from London to Glasgow on next bank holiday Friday evening, but I would like to break my journey around Manchester, can it be a reasonable excuse to stay in a roadside hotel Premier Inn style?

    • Memesweeper says:

Depends… call the hotel. If they accept your booking I’d not worry.

      • Doug says:

Yes the hotel accepted as they agreed it is an essential stop to break the journey due to fatigue, yeah right sounds like they are happy with my cash as I couldn’t leave next morning 🙂

    • Anna says:

Technically you’d need to be travelling for business or another exempt reason and you may well have to provide evidence of this. You don’t say why you’re travelling but if Glasgow is your home it may be permitted to stay overnight somewhere en route, but again you’d need to check the regulations.

      • The cyclist says:

        Doug,

Don’t worry about the naysayers and bores on here, course its fine, its unreasonable to expect to drive that distance especially if your leaving late and battling Bank Holiday traffic.

        • Anna says:

Doug might appreciate the advice of the naysayers and bores if he failed to check whether he was allowed to stay at a hotel under these circumstances and had to sleep in his car.

        • Ernie says:

          Are you being serious?

Driving London to Glasgow is perfectly doable. I drive 400 miles most days, 400 miles should be a breeze on a motorway route.

Set adaptive cruise control, lane control and off you go.

      • Tariq says:

Perhaps the exemption “not being able to return home“?

  • Waddle says:

Does anyone know what MCC is used when paying TV Licence?

    Thanks

    • mark2 says:

Just paid it so still pending.
Marked as ‘Business Services’ but I have changed it to ‘Bills’ FWIW.

  • Fm says:

My wife has randomly received a priority pass card in the mail today, with a letter saying it’s in association with her ‘amex platinum membership.’ The issue is that she hasn’t had an amex card for nearly 2 years! 2 year anniversary is in July. Anyone been in this situation before? Not sure what to do with it

    • NC says:

Yes this happened to me too recently – no Amex in years. We just threw it in the bin.

    • Blair says:

      Use it

    • Tom1 says:

I received one today, also without platinum currently. My parents also recently.

Seem to remember someone saying that when you try to use it, it will decline as no linked card.

      • Fm says:

Thanks all, is going to the shredder, just worried the AMEX account is still marked as active somewhere – hopefully won’t affect bonus eligibility

    • @mkcol says:

Mum’s been getting one at my house for the last 4 years despite me not having had her as a supp cardholder on my platinum account for at least 5 years.

  • Lee Brown says:

Anyone have an idea/opinion if the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is likely to re-appear in the UK. In USA it currently has a 125k point plus free night sign up bonus (after $3k spend)

    • Memesweeper says:

Opinion? Very unlikely. There are no new generous non-Amex cards being launched and many of those that existed are being withdrawn.

    • Anna says:

Aren’t they issued by a completely different bank in the US as well? Sign up bonuses are always better across the pond, though less opportunity to churn, apparently.

      • bafan says:

Yes I’m working on a AAdvantage card SUB at the moment – 60k / $3k in 3 months spend. Free for the first year then $95 after but free bags when you have the card.

The value proposition is incredible relative to here. But then again they don’t have airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet pushing the prices down in the same way…
