Sainsbury’s cutting weekly Nectar (Avios) bonus offers for some

There have been numerous reports in our daily chat threads recently about a reduction in the value of weekly Nectar bonus point offers to use when shopping at Sainsbury’s.

Each week, Nectar offers bonus points on a number of personalised own-brand Sainsbury’s products via the Nectar app. These can be very generous, and at times the value of the Avios earned outweighs the cost of the product.

The system isn’t ideal, however. It requires the shopper to install the Nectar app on their phone and to remember to go into it each week to activate the current crop of coupons. In my book, this is too much ‘friction’.

It also makes the value in the Nectar scheme too difficult to see. Anyone considering a switch from Tesco is likely to focus on the headline ‘1 point per £1 spent’ number and decide that the scheme is a waste of space. It is hard for Sainsbury’s to promote the value of personalised offers when they are, well, personalised …..

New offers may no longer arrive every week

Sainsbury’s has confirmed to moneysavingexpert.com that it has made changes.

It said:

“We regularly review the promotions available through our Nectar app to ensure customers are always receiving personalised, valuable offers. As part of this process, some offers may be currently unavailable for a small number of customers and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Not all members will receive new offers each week. You may well see this in your app:

References to ‘weekly offers’ have also been removed from the app and from the website.

Here are two comparisons of the iOS promotional page for the app – image c/o moneysavingexpert.com:

Let’s see where this ends up. If it leads to a greater focus on in-store bonus point offers then it would be fairer to all customers whilst also making the attractions of Nectar more visible.

Does anyone receive Sainsbury’s vouchers in the post? I opted in for marketing post but still don’t receive any.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Very occasionally for no apparent reason. Maybe a couple of times a year if that. Normally money off vouchers

  • Aston100 says:

I think it’s time we organised a lynch mob and hunted down Super Secret Stuff.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Hahaha, I will take my 20 offers from this week and stay quiet. Nowhere near as good as before, but…. between this and last weeks unused offers, I have 32 offers, apparently they like me a lot!

  • Patrick Cold says:

My offers have just arrived. 18 this week – far more than any other. It`s a peculiar process.

  • T W says:

Yep my offers have disappeared completely. Weird is it because I am a regular spender so they don’t care anymore? If so this is POOR!

  • Andy in Cheshire says:

A couple of weeks ago I got 1,680 bonus Nectar points at Sainsbury’s just by buying things I regularly buy anyway.

That was an exceptional week though. Usually is 4-500 bonus.

I am converting all of the bonus points to Avios and keeping the normal spend ones to help pay for Christmas.

  • Mzungu says:

“You don’t have any offers at the moment…” for me.
Tried installing the Esso app this morning – add payment method – doesn’t accept Amex! I’d earn more paying by Amex, so uninstalled before I even finished the setup 🙁

  • Aston100 says:

    20 offers this week.
One for 30pts, and the rest for 10 or 20 points each.
I’ve given Sainsburys a miss for the past 2 weeks, thinking the offers would improve.
    Clearly not.

  • Simon says:

An element of it will be time of the year. Easter is a big driver of spend (someone once told me that Maundy Thursday was the third highest turnover day is supermarkets, behind only 23 Dec and the Friday before Christmas) and they were clearly looking to drive that spend into Sainsbury’s. Now it’s a lean period – kids at school, not warm enough yet for high margin bbq food, no big sporting events to drive multipack alcohol sales – deadened further by the opening up of hospitality. Hence the pivot to offers which trigger with a higher spend – they’re not looking to recruit people at the moment, just stretch the spend of people there anyway. Suspect that we’ll start to see more offers again around Euro 2020 football and then another promotion pre Christmas (last year’s was very lucrative for no additional spend on my part).
