Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Thursday 22nd April

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Our BA avios flights to Dubai due on 17th May were cancelled earlier this week. BA let us rebook for December holidays which was appreciated. However, we now want to take our kids too. here are no avios flights available so what is the best way to book? It seems you have to book with an adult on Ba.com but ourkids are 12 and 15 which is a different option. I would like to book cash flights, reduce price with Avios and link the 2 bookings together.

    • ChrisC says:

You would need to phone BA.

The only linking between the bookings would be a note in the PNR which really doesn’t mean much in practice.

You would still have two separate bookings that would be managed separately in MMB etc

    • Chris Heyes says:

Tim J As your kids are 12 and 15 I’m absolutely sure BA “WILL” accommodate that, get a sympathetic BA rep if they say no (i doubt they will)
politely ask to speak to someone who can authorise it

Has the Amex harrods offer gone through for people? Bought something online for north of £200 a week ago. No rebate and the offer is still in saved offers. It wasn’t gift cards.

  • Tracey says:

Phoned to transfer Avios to nectar for elderly relative and was asked why the accounts had different first names. Genuinely the same account for elderly relative, whose BA account matches her passport but nectar matches her first name that is her middle name on passport. Different email addresses as I operate her BA account, whereas she operates her nectar / sainsbob one. The operator said she was making notes on the file in case it was all queried and would be in touch by email if there was an issue. Told it could take 10 working days.

    • idrive says:

but it is still allowed to have a nectar card linked to a different BA holder right? i remember you could link up to 2 different in a year or so?

  • Tiger says:

Thanks @Genghis for your comment yesterday regarding my Amex PRG query.

But your comment left me curious. If you don’t mind sharing, please could you share the reason why you were banned by Amex. It might serve as a reminder for us regarding when not to take it too far with Amex!
    Thanks.

Aggressive use of Shop Small I seem to recall?

      +1

The great Mongol Emperor is one of my favourite posters and he could easily monetise some of his advice.

I would genuinely contribute if he started a crowdfunder to seed his idea of a basic financial know-how website.

I was also intrigued (although it might have been mentioned in the distant past – so many tales of bannings from various platforms on this site, ha ha).

But it is Genghis’s own business, so I’d be equally content if he remained silent, and just left us all to ponder amusingly on whatever dastardly, SPECTRE-like masterplan his razor sharp brain devised to result in being banned by one of the world’s major financial institutions.

Impressive, no doubt, but probably something I wouldn’t fully understand, let alone think of myself.

    @Harry T:
Your instant 3k bonvoy points from adding supp today, did you do it through the app as I went through desktop?

    • Harry T says:

      Desktop!

      • Secret Squirrel says:

I went through desktop via the link on here but points were not instant like yours? With usual Supp cards it takes a day or two to credit in my experience.

    • TGLoyalty says:

I also went through website but only 1 nectar supp was instant

I would give it a couple days before applying for Mum Dad sister brother dog cat goldfish etc

(I jest with the pets before someone shouts fraud)

    • Andrew says:

Is this via a specific link? And is it just on Bonvoy or BAPP too?

      • TGLoyalty says:

        see page 1.

BAPP just mentions the usual 1st supp bonus but you never know

  • Rob says:

    2 part question:

    – my partner would like to reapply for the PRGC after only cancelling it 3 weeks ago. I assume Amex will take a dim view on this? Would it make any difference if she applied for a different Amex this time in terms of how they view it?

    – I assume the increased referrals offer will also apply to new card applicants until the offer expiry? I.e so she can refer me back once accepted.

    Thanks

Six senses seychelles is back bookable on points… But its gone up to 200k!

    • Secret Squirrel says:

It was only 100k a night yesterday when I looked. Also, I noticed that IC Maldives had gone back up to 120k a night. It was 100k then up to 120k in the ihg points fiasco then went down to 100k now back up by 20%
