Your questions, answered

A number of you left questions in the comments on Tuesday. We submitted these to Capital on Tap. Here are their responses:

How long does my company need to be trading before I am eligible for the card?

Capital on Tap considers all limited companies which have turnover of at least £2,000 per month, don’t have any unsatisfied CCJs in the last 12 months against them or their business and are based in the UK. There is no minimum period following incorporation as long as your run-rate turnover is £2,000 per month.

Is this card issued and credit checked to the individual applying, or does that liability sit with the limited company?

Capital on Tap consider both your personal and business credit profile during the underwriting process. Applying for a Capital on Tap credit card will not affect your personal credit score. You will have personal liability for charges made to the card.

Can I use the card for non-business expenditure?

This is a business credit card and should be used for business spend.

Someone in my company already has a Capital on Tap card. Would I still get the bonus?

The offer is only for new customers. Capital on Tap is only able to offer one account for each business so if your business already has an active CoT account you won’t be approved or benefit from the bonus.

I / my company previously had a Capital on Tap card but have since closed the account. Am I still eligible for the sign-up bonus?

If your business previously closed a Capital on Tap account prior to April 2021 then it may still be eligible.

You are welcome to submit a new application. These will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If accepted, you will receive the bonus.

What exchange rate is used on foreign transactions?

The Capital on Tap card comes with 0% foreign exchange fees. Any foreign transactions are calculated based on the daily Visa foreign exchange rates, as published on the Visa website.

You can apply for the Capital on Tap Business Rewards card here.

PS. Some people who applied on Tuesday and Wednesday AM received emails from Capital on Tap which mentioned the normal 10,000 points bonus and not the higher 29,900 HfP reader bonus. This has now been corrected. Don’t worry – you will still receive the full bonus.

  • Mark says:

I’ve had a cot account since the original promotion a year or so ago. Extremely flexible and very handy for those with servers staff.

The website is easy to use and allows you to quickly and easily set individual credit limits on each card, which of you need to change are instantly updated, view pins for each card (staff are forever forgetting them) and manage your account.

What’s also handy is the statement is emailed to you as a pdf attachment, with a clear section for each card user.

I’m having an issue with connecting to quickbooks at the moment but the team at cot did try and call me to resolve it last week, (I was unavailable) but when was the last time any companies support called you to rectify an issue!! Excellent card and service in my opinion

  • Небоход says:

I made a large purchase on my COT card that the merchant rejected for some reason, so it bounced back to my credit card.

I received my bill and found it was £2000 out in my favour.

COT said that it treats refunds as an inward payment instead of a reversal, so reduces the bill until the following month when the account readjusts.

This annoyed me because I like things clean cut.

    😐

    However….

I’ll leave you to infer how this could be advantageous…..😏

  • Roger W says:

Shame they only use it for Business expenditure. I have trivial spend on my Limited Company as am a locum in healthcare.

Used the AmexBusiness to pay for Teacos, flights and cruises etc.

    • Rob says:

…. despite the warning printed on the bottom of every statement that it is to be used only for business spending?

    • Greg Morgan says:

How can they tell if a purchase is for business or personal use ?

  • Greg Morgan says:

I’ve applied every time there is an offer on, and instantly refused despite trading for over 20 years and a £100k+ turnover. When you enter your company name on the application it comes up with names of Directors, registered office etc (presumably its linked to Companies House) but I still get an instant decline with an email saying to try again in 6 months time

    • Peter K says:

      Have you tried ringing?

    • P Snowdon says:

Hi, me too – applied today, 120k/mo turnover – I am using a Virgin Atlantic card (on my file) with a. Amex Biz Plat on company file for spend. Don’t know why we were rejected. Large amt of cash in bank. Ah well, won’t try again.

      • Super Secret Stuff says:

Number of directors? Something in yours or there’s personal credit history? Just a few ideas if you wanted to see what’s stopping you

  • Neil says:

I have a small company, run as a sideline. I’ve been using an ‘ordinary’ CC for all my eBay fees (95% of my business is done there) and have been accepted for the Capital card, so will use that. Makes up for the ending of the Avios on Mastercard.

    • Freddy says:

Payments via card will be short-lived when everything is being transferred to managed payments so ebay fees are deducted straight from the sale price

  • Robin says:

    Thanks, nice promotion.
But my app states 10,000 for 5k spend and despite first purchase, the sign up rewards are not displaying, just 1 point per £ …
Do you think that’s a glitch?

    • Rob says:

Yes, it’s a glitch. They can’t reprogramme their system purely for HfP readers unfortunately.
