We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Accor late to the party (as usual) but just announced yesterday “Throughout 2021, you will get 2X Status nights and 2X Status points on all your eligible stays”.

    • marcw says:

They announced it early this year.

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Thanks – I must have missed that – weird approach by them to ‘relaunch’ it but I guess as pretty much no-one has been able to travel until now they thought they’d remind people with short memories (like me!)

  • Anna says:

Quite a few e-standby upgrade offers have appeared on my IHG bookings this morning. These seem to come and go in line with IHG’s erratic IT so it’s worth jumping on them if you want them!

    • Diydegsy says:

Hi Anna where do you see these e-standby offers?

    • gareth says:

Where do you see these Anna? Thanks

      • Anna says:

If you click through to the booking details page, they usually show up in a box where the room type you’ve booked is displayed. They can come and go in a very short period which makes me think they are some sort of IT glitch, however when you select them you do get a confirmation email so the hotel is bound to honour them if they’re available at check in.

        • Diydegsy says:

Hi, thanks Anna I’ve had a look but none on my 10 reservations but I will keep looking in future.

          • Anna says:

Make sure you select “View Stay Details” as it only shows on the final page.

    • BP says:

E-standby offers always show if you click through the “View More Reservation Details” link in your confirmation email.

£147 for the top suite at IC The George in Edinburgh isn’t a bad deal.

      • Anna says:

Thanks BP! I usually delete the confirmation emails as the booking details show in my IHG account anyway but I’ll start paying more attention to them.

        • Anna says:

Though that looks to be the same page as you click through to in the IHG account anyway. My offers are pretty rubbish today, I have to say, like breakfast for £15 pn for a booking which already includes it!

    • Aston100 says:

      Thanks Anna.
However, I can’t see this on any of my bookings; reward nights or cash at HIX, HI, Indigo, Voco or CP.

  • Ant says:

Nectar/Sainsbury’s stopped giving weekly points offers for those who collect a lot of points it would seem….

    • David wakelin says:

I seem to be getting them (another lot this morning) and I always snap up the bonus offer products – I have an cupboard full of strawberry jam and non-bio washing detergent !!

  • Zoe says:

    Hello all
I need to get a will done for me and my partner. I was wondering if there is any way of doing this and getting some Avios out of it.
I did have a look on EC portal but couldn’t see anything. However I may be looking in the wrong place.
    Thanks

    • Joe says:

As a solicitor specialising in estate planning, my recommendation would be to pick the best solicitor, regardless of Avios collection – a Will is not a document you should be skimping and saving on. It’s probably the most important document you’ll ever sign and it needs to be right!

      • Anna says:

Totally agree, however there’s nothing to stop you paying the best solicitor with Amex via Billhop if you don’t mind the fee!

      • Zoe says:

Sensible advice! I probably should find someone local and good. Thank you.

      • Chris Heyes says:

Joe As a solicitor How on earth do you know who is the best solicitor ?
Is there a magical list number 1,2,3, solicitor we don’t know about ?
10 and below never hire ?
My Cousin is/was a solicitor (Claridge’s) wouldn’t claim to be the best, got good results though (in his late 70s now)

    • Rhys says:

My Amex cards have an offer for Co-op will writing services…!

  • Diydegsy says:

If you book an IHG or Marriott hotel through Emyr does it show in your account if you have given him your rewards number ?

    • Harry T says:

      Yes

      • Anna says:

I’ve always had to search for the reservation in my IHG account then use the link provided to get it to show up in my bookings.

      • Harry T says:

I should say my experience is only with Marriott, where the reservation auctioned by Emyr always shows in my Bonvoy account.

    • ChrisC says:

Once you have the booking reference you can add it to your account yourself. That’s certainly the case with IHG.

  • Alex says:

Have IHG announced what their redemption revamp was all about? I.e. we’ve moved to a model based on x with a cap of x?

  • jason says:

Is anyone else getting declined on max amex cards, saying you cant have more than 4 but in reality you only have 3 live

    • Benilyn says:

Have seen accounts with 3x personal and 1x biz

    • Youllnever says:

Where is it saying that message? I’ve got 4 personal live at the moment.

    • yorkieflyer says:

Just added a 4th this month, but mrs yorkieflyer declined when asking for a 5th last month

  • Yuff says:

I see the figures regarding hospitalisation, from covid, are hugely encouraging in terms of vaccination. 1 in 2300 patients had been vaccinated in 74k people admitted to hospital in the UK with covid.
Also a survey today shows exercise also contributes hugely to immunity from diseases like covid. Good move to shut gyms for 12 weeks then…….

    • The Lord says:

Just read through this and very encouraging. Effectively shows that only 1.6% of those hospitalised had been vaccinated at least 3 weeks prior to hospitalisation. The study was also focused on the elderly population and after only 1 jab so would expect the number in reality to be much lower.

Agreed on the gyms, absurd. Also absurd is Hammersmith Council banning running along the river at certain times of the day! We live in a society now where this is acceptable but saying that being fat is an awful lifestyle choice is unacceptable.

This thing will be over in June. There are plenty of people who will appear on TV to say otherwise but they have their newly found platforms to protect and book deals to ink. No idea why some of these ‘doctors’ and ‘professors’ get the airtime that they do when their field is nothing to do with viruses and epidemiology. I have a masters in science but would not call myself a scientist!

      • TGLoyalty says:

because they will happily toe the media line.

The fact that opposing views weren’t heard or considered at all meant the news coverage over the past year was useless. Just goes to show calling this a ‘free society’ is just a façade

        • Anna says:

There’s nothing to stop you researching, reading about or sharing opposing views, this is actually the sign of a free society! A quick perusal of Amnesty International’s website will show you what a society which isn’t free looks like, and it’s not the UK.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Anna it’s not about “me” it’s about the general public. The media hasn’t educated anyone about the virus instead they’ve pumped people full of fear.

          • Tariq says:

The absence of torture doesn’t mean that the UK is a free country.

          • Rob says:

You don’t want to live in a totally free country. Your freedom to do absolutely anything you wanted would de facto clash with my freedom to do whatever I like, or indeed to be able to live my life without incursions from you using your freedom.

Do you not find it odd that it is usually the neo-nazi far-right groups who are most concerned with having more ‘freedom’? I don’t find my cosy middle class existence troubled by state oppression.

      • maccymac says:

Because only virologists and epidemiologists have been treating and saving the lives of the 461,115 patients admitted with coronavirus during this pandemic?

You don’t need a MSc to use common sense do you?

        • The Lord says:

I should hope that they have. I doubt professors in race relations, nutrition, mathematics and health governance have been treating and saving lives but they have spent plenty of time getting their agendas across all forms of media.

      • Chris Heyes says:

The Lord Wow It will be “Over in June”
Wow it will just die away, care to put the date in June on it.
I’m glad to know though that after June there wont be anymore Covid cases
This news coming from “Our Lord” is brilliant
Almost as good as when you farted the waters (sorry parted) lol

        • The Lord says:

Sure it will. Cases per day will be below 1000, deaths per day in the single digits and under 500 people in hospital with it and people will accept that. Society will have opened back up and things will be back to a relative normal.

        • Anna says:

June 6th, to be precise, which is the date of my 2nd jab!

    • ken says:

“Out of 74,405 Covid-19 patients between September and March, just 32 had received a vaccine at least three weeks before.”
      …….one vaccinated patient out of 2,300 ”

Surely they can’t mean from September (when we didn’t start vaccinating until 8th December).
Makes the rate statistic somewhat worthless wouldn’t you say

      • The Lord says:

It is odd that they included September and then effectively stripped those numbers out.

“Prof Calum Semple, of the University of Liverpool, says researchers looked “very carefully” at the hospital records of these 74,000 people and worked out how many had been admitted after vaccination started – 43,000.

They then identified within that number just under 2,000 people that had received the vaccine, and examined how many days there were between receiving the vaccine and the onset of their symptoms.”

      • Brian says:

All of their statistics and numbers have been somewhat worthless. There’s a reason why people talk about lies, damn lies and statistics. You can make a number do whatever you want – most people who read that sentence about the 74,405 patients simply won’t (bother to) think about the fact that vaccinations only began later. So they will automatically assume that the vaccine (and the government) is more effective than it is.

    • Brian says:

A survey shows that? Good thing there was this survey – nobody could possibly have guessed such a thing….

    • Kevin C says:

Very pleased vaccination is having an effect. Had a friend who died of Covid in January. She was 49. We also know someone with long Covid and it is a life changing condition. I hope we can keep numbers down and get back to a more normal way of life soon but keeping gyms open in January probably wouldn’t have been that good an idea.
